and that's the beatufiul thing about the evolution of music.

the foundations just build on top of each other.

tell me this doesn't blow you away...

and then of course...

and it keeps on going...

there's something about the sound of blues that is definitely timeless.

I'm so glad that new artists keep finding ways to pick up on and expand it.

the most miraculous thing about the blues is discovering its influence in the places you least expect it.

like when North African nomads began to pick up electric guitars and started meshing this brand new sound with their ancient tribal desert music, the result has been truly profound and awe inspiring. some of the most beautiful trance-inducing, journey-taking, thought-provoking sounds I've heard in a long time. in fact, I don't know that I've really ever heard anything like this before.

the call and repeat. the pentatonic scales. the solo improvisation.

it's classic blues but it's filtered through a culture and a style unlike anything else in Western music.

I can't help myself.

the dirtier it sounds, the low fidelity, the rougher and sharper it gets around the edges, the more I love it.

My dad just bought a couple of tickets to see John Mayall live September 14th :D looking forward to it. Mayall over 80 years old and I hope he's still "got it". I'll post in here after the concert.

Here's a cool tune, the first Mayall tune I heard:

we saw these guys just last Summer @ Red Rocks here in Colorado. amazing show, so much better live than they even sound on the album.

Mayall is the sh/t.

let's hear it for old white dudes with soul!

Gotta be honest, slightly disappointed with the concert. Big stage and concert hall, packed full. It simply wasn't loud enough. When you're in a large concert situation, it has to be loud. This was underwhelming in that department, you could probably play music in your home at that volume without neighbors complaining.

Mayall played some guitar too. A delicious Gibson ES-125T through an equally mouth-watering Roland JC-120, both of which were done little justice by some impotent improvisation by the man himself.

The bass player was a disgrace. I've seen many, many bad solos in my life, but his were a new level of terrible. He only had two, thank god. Never before have I seen a solo consisting of sporadic atonality paired with slapping the neck from above with both hands, as if it were musical. The guy also did the ol' "slide the pick along the strings to make a weird noise" many times.

If I set these gripes aside, it was pretty good. Mayall could still sing very well and play well despite his age. The drummer was great, and the guitarist was pretty good as well. I was very impressed with some of their coordination, especially when it came to ending a song or dynamics.

that's good to hear.

I mean usually - barring a total trainwreck - I still prefer an imperfect live performance to a perfect pair of headphones.

we saw Bob Dylan in St Louis years ago (like when I was young, with my parents) and even though he sounded like sh/t, the band was phenomenal and the crowd was super into it. you almost couldn't understand a single word the guy was singing but the audience just carried him along and he responded by chatting between songs. as long as the artist enjoys what they're doing they seem to make it work.

Stevie is probably still my favorite electric blues guitarist of all time.

but he was so masterful on the strings that anything he touched turned to gold, plugged in or not.

I would give both nuts to be able to play like SRV.

as if that wasn't enough his VOICE was incredible. especially for the blues.

Blues is good, but blues rock is where it's at.

blues rock

you know, a lot of young people think they hate blues because they literally haven't given it a chance...

they write it off as something their parents listened to. a lot of them merely don't understand that much of the new music they enjoy today is a direct descendant of the blues and rockabilly style that bridged the gap between the analog and digital ages of music production. without American blues, the modern music scene would look very different today than we know it.
