Every game has a skybox. Just different implementations. That skybox is used in one of the weather patterns.

But, could Jacob's pose here be the beta cover animation for Niko? It's in the final mission of the game.

Even though Niko's beta hair and texture are in the game files, I thought that the hair still didn't look like the model in Trailer 2/screens for some reason, so I made a little analysis.

 

I found out the model itself is the same, just very slightly changed in some edges, but might be draw distance from the engine, I'm seeing this model in XPS, and I also noticed the texture is the same, but there's a difference, one thing is being more brown-ish than before.

If you didn't notice, this area seems changed...

...because look at the texture, seems like someone painted over that area with a brush, why? I don't know, was this a f*ck up or were they testing? Well, either way they eventually scrapped this model and made the new one.

I tried editing in Photoshop to kinda make it at least look similar to the screenshot, this is the result

This is my edited texture, feel free to use if you want. Maybe I'll keep working on it, if I do I'll edit this post.

I think the hair is more like grayish black not brown.

 

Here's a pic where you could probably see better. It doesn't even look brown to me.

It just looks like that because the Timecyc was different in the BETA and sometimes Rockstar just "polishes up" their games for screenshots/trailers...

I guarantee they had some reasoning behind the scenes, or else it wouldn't of been cut. Perhaps some of this stuff was too out of place (Like that weird zombie game thing) or diddn't fit the art style (Some of the old hud counterparts) and other things we don't know, but I'm pretty sure it had to do with mostly one of those 2 things, or maybe some of it was becuase of console limitations, we will never know.

Also because of artistic choice, I mean not in the sense of unfitting but just by pure choice. I think that's the reason behind changing Niko's haircut, R* generally does a retouch on some of their designs, the main clothes for the protagonist usually get an enhancement (sometimes it's not) or change as development proceeds. As the graphics and details got better in IV, they adapted Niko and his clothing to that (remember the actual low-poly mess that was his jacket in the earliest screenshots).

I would've kept the original haircut, it's everywhere in artworks and it's how Niko was meant to look like.

 

Another reason I can think of is their skill on the hardware at the time, they probably couldn't get some stuff working right. Then they knew how to push to the limit with RDR and GTA V.

I recently watched the Gameshakers (the BBC movie about GTA) and I seem to have found a (beta?) map from IV

also, sorry for the lowres screengrabs :D

How did they even got the idea of putting the III logo there, if you're making a documentary about Rockstar and its games you do your research first, especially when it's taking place during the hot coffee scandal... :lol:

 

OT I don't think this map is a beta/alpha version, it looks like they took one random map and changed it to fit with the background, it's lacking too much roads and there's green stuff that aren't supposed to be there in the first place.

I hate how they used PC footage, even though it was supposed to represent PS2 version.

The map isn't real, it's made for the Gamechangers. That is a documentary by BBC, not even approved by R*. Well... not that they would but that's a different story.

BBC's knowlegde on GTA is awful. Though, it'd be much funnier if they used the GTA V map with GTA SA logo.

TLaD episode was probably meant to have a variation of Admiral, because VehOff.csv file has camera data for "admiral2".

EDIT. Also "biff2" and "rhino". "bus" and "firetruk" are probably updated data for vehicles from the original game.

So... That van was meant to be the Mr. Tasty? I always thought it was a cut mail van. Reminds me of the Grumman LLV for some reason.

Damn, only now I noticed that the tree's shadow is baked instead of dynamic. As far as I can remember, the final games doesn't have prerendered shadows at all, they all are real-time.

They probably wanted to make every plate different, not like it makes any difference actually.

 

OT: I remember when people thought that Statue of Happiness was removed from the game because it wasn't shown in the next trailer, hehe.

They probably had San Andreas style random license plate system planned for GTA IV that didn't make the final cut. Empty license plates were likely placeholders. It was eventually brought back with GTA V.
You can spot them in various pre-release screenshots.
