I plan to buy myself a new laptop soon and get GTA IV so I can 'fix' it (in other words, fix my personal problems) with modding (i've already modded San Andreas to death, it's time to move on.

Here are the key features of the laptop I plan on buying:

  • 15" diagonal HD LED-backlit Display (1366 x 768)
  • 4th Generation Intel Core i7-4510U Processor
  • (4M Cache, 2.0 up to 3.10 GHz)
  • 8GB RAM
  • 1TB HDD
  • Webcam
  • Bluetooth
  • NVIDIA GeForce 840M Graphics with 2GB Memory
  • 1 x HDMI
  • 3 x USB
  • Windows 8.1

I'm fine with having a 30fps framerate.

Thanks for an answer, what settings will I be able to run it at while retaining a 30fps framerate?

As for the troll, I'm aware of GTA IV's content and I was disappointed, but I want it for PC so I can mod it into a different game.

My laptop's an i7 2.5ghz with a GT650m and I run the game nicely with all the sliders about halfway and everything else on max. Start there and work your way down if needs be, but I think it will run just fine on that rig.

Original poster, ask a moderator to move your thread to the modded games forum. They should be able to help you with more recommendations

I purchased the laptop today and IV is downloading at 17.6% (don't judge me, I already own it on PS3), i've done research and the graphic card may even allow me a graphic mod.

Your laptop should run it fine. Just make sure you install the latest patch.

Has anyone ever had any issues with GTA IV/EFLC on Windows 8.1, I don't want to waste all this internet (14.6 GB) downloading the game only to have it not work, I've installed San Andreas onto my Windows 8.1 laptop and the mouse won't work.

Will I still be able to mod (it's the only reason i'm getting PC IV), I know patches made San Andreas unmodable.

I think so, I hear the 1.0.4.0 patch is the best when it comes to modding the game.

Good to know, the download should be done soon.

Modding is possible on all patches but graphical mods aren't always compatible with the two latest patches, because Rockstar introduced supposedly less memory-intensive shadows with patch 1.0.6.0, which are actually very ressource hungry. And if I remember correctly, they also made it more difficult to mod the shaders.

Patch 1.0.3.0 and 1.0.4.0 are commonly used for modding. If you download the game on Steam, for instance, then you will automatically have the latest patch on it. And downgrading to an earlier one is difficult if not even impossible, as far as I know. In which case, it would be probably better to get the game in a retail store.

Game is installed and runs beautifully, had a few hiccups though, firstly the game was trying to run of my integrated graphics and not my dedicated (which was easily fixed) and secondly, I had to install a command line because for some reason the game was thinking I only had 27mb of available resources, which caused it to load forever.

Now it's modding time.

EDIT: I do have one problem, I can't use the mouse in game, same goes for San Andreas for that matter, it's a Windows 8 issue.

I have Windows 8.1 and the mouse works fine for me. So it's definitely not a windows issue. Are you using a wire-less mouse?

Just using the laptop touch-pad for now, I intend on connecting my old PS3 controller to use as a gamepad.
