I like both games a lot (SA is my favorite in the series though) and since the IV board has a topic for things IV had that were better, here is one for what V did better.

1. Mission Variety

In my opinion, i do not think GTAV really did anything better than GTAIV.

Apart from having great graphics and a larger, more diverse map, GTAIV+ dlc still had much more life packed into it than GTAV.

Oh yeah, you can also say that GTAV at least had animals, but that's about it.

We had a very large and heated V versus IV debate recently: http://gtaforums.com...ersus-v-debate/

It was a hotbed of argument and ended very badly so please take heed, the first hint of trouble in this thread and it will be locked.

Thanks.

How about those who understand the rules just play the game and those who don't like the premise create their own?

2. Cover system.
3. Movement/climbing controls.
4. Vehicle controls. (I don't call IV's driving "realistic", I call it "badly emulated through the controller")
5. Collision detection.
6. PC Optimisation? (yet to be proven)
7. Mission variety / structure.
8. Wanted system (I was able to hide from cops in a parking lot, which is cheesy, but at least it's easier than IV's without having to evacuate the entire borough)
9. 'Classic' cheat input

-Graphics (expected)
-Replay value
-Fun factor
-Weapon variety
-Vehicle variety
-Map design

Now the following wasn't included in IV, but they contribute to why I think V is a much better game:

-Vehicle customisation
-Weapon customisation
-Planes
-Countryside
-Animals

That's all I can think of for just now.

Oh, and inb4 Osho, Official General & co ruin this thread.

-Vehicle customisation
Was meant to be in IV.

-Weapon customisation
Was also meant to be in IV.

-Countryside
Also meant to be in IV, including surrounding mountains.

-Animals
Not sure, but seagulls were previewed early in IV and I don't recall ever actually seeing them. Plus they'd make sense if the surrounding countryside/mountains were present.

North are great when it comes to missed opportunities - most of those things are supposed to be in SA too :p

  • Level of detail in most areas
  • Vehicle customization
  • Adding a sh*t load of high-end cars (even though it was overkilled)
  • Action missions
  • City infrastructure (roads, highways, the way everything is laid out)

That's about all I have right now.

Right, but aren't we discussing the final product, you know, the game we played? What was or wasn't meant to be included is irrelevant chief. :)

I know, just pointing it out as an interesting point of discussion, especially since you emphasised that those weren't in IV at all.

* Graphics and visual effects.
* Map size (although much of it was wasted).
* Car customization.

* Underwater section (which still could have been better).

That's it.

The Strip Club is clearly the best improvement and the most important thing V did better than IV.

- Skydiving, clouds and parachute mechanics in general.

The skydiving feel you get when you start from very tall distances is incredible.

IMO every new installment of GTA is objectively better than the previous. Subjectively, people get bitchy at not-so-relevant features they were overly attached on a previous game that are missing or are diferently done on the new game. Vice City is the GTA i like the most, but i recognize every GTA after it is just better in almost every way. People need to learn to differentiate between the best game and the game they like the most.

Side Note:But i think Vice City is the Most Beloved in the Franchise from what i have heard and read, even David Jones called it the "Pinnacle of GTA" but why is that the case?

Completely agreed.

I've been saying this for as long as I can remember. Every GTA just gets better and better as far as I'm concerned, and each is just an evolution from the last. I don't allow myself to hang on to this little feature or that little feature to the point I bitch and whine that a new GTA is "wurzt gaim ever". As long as the series continues it's backbone of an action-adventure game with a crime theme and an open world where you can steal cars and shoot people, I have no doubt R* will continue to improve and improve with this great franchise.

That's exactly it. Games are art, you can't judge them on an XX/10 scale except technologically, and it's indisputable that each game is technologically better than the previous. But when it comes to fun and other things that you have to "feel", there's no way to say what's better or worse. I've tried to explain this to just about every single person who spends too much of their effort on putting down V fans, but all forms of logic fail to wash with those people :p

I even have to participate in these positive topics not because I like actually talking about games this much, but to restore my own mental balance after reading so much negativity!

Anyway, and remember that these, like most of these points, are all subjective opinions (except the undeniable technological improvements):

- Protagonists (Niko: Yawn, Johnny: SMH, Luis: actually don't know much about him)
- Character depth (Niko's was great - arguably TOO deep and dramatic, but Michael has great balance and emotional realism)
- Psychopathy (Trevor! Somehow GTA's protagonists have all lacked psychopathy... what's a GTA game without a psycho protagonist?)
- Nostalgia (IV didn't trigger much III nostalgia, but V shoved SA nostalgia right in my face)
- Unpredictability (IV's story may have been deep, but it was fairly predictable overall and never very shocking)

And last, but not least...
- Torturing fans with delays and long announcement gaps :p

Combat mechanics. It's the first 3d GTA game in 13 years that I've felt completely satisfied with them. Not to say they can't  be better, but they don't need to be better.

I'm not sure, really. I played SA before VC since I didn't own a PS2 until about 2007-08 (yet I'd played plenty of III years before with other people), so perhaps that tarnished my opinion of it, but there was a fair bit that didn't just really strike me as that great... I didn't like the map much, it was way too flat and the buildings were too small for my tastes, the story and Tommy were too bland (too typical 80's Gangster flick and the type of simplistic "tough goon" character bores me) and I already knew the ending so it pissed me off having to save Lance's ass in Cop Land (worst.. mission.. ever) and the rest of the missions seemed all too trivial, making me do stuff for the sake and cool factor of it.

I'm sure if I'd played it after III and before SA, I would have been less spoilt with SA and it would have seemed right.. and don't get me wrong, I did still like all the sandbox aspects of VC, especially cutting off heads with a machete and chainsawing peds with shopping bags glued to their hands till blood covered the screen... but when I think of all the other GTA games, it only manages to top IV in the list merely for providing a more fun free roaming experience.

On that note...
- Better free-roaming experience

The whole game is just a lot more dynamic than IV, or anything else out there right now.

I know it's a bit of a buzzword nowadays, but the way in which all of these elements manage to blend together. In terms of contextual, dynamic animations and situations, it's amazing. There's all of these little touches to the animations, navigation, combat and general feel that make the game so much more satisfying to be in control of than IV. This is even with a controller (from my experience) at a constant of 25 FPS. Not even a stable 30.

I can't begin to imagine how good it will feel on PC at 60 FPS, without all of that input lag and sh*t. The thing that got me the moment I saw the gameplay trailer for V was how f*cking precise and just awesome-looking the combat was. That one bit with Franklin...

Spoiler

3:08 mark.

Judging by that bit alone. Free aim is going to be so damn good! It just looks like it flows so much better than IV's. It's not so static and stiff. It feesl very smooth and adaptive in execution.
