Let's see, where's dark and gritty, and isn't on the West Coast? One word: Chicago.

Washington DC during the 1980s and 1990s was pretty gritty, along with Carcer City, where Manhunt took place

We're not going back in time, okay? It's not going to happen.

Where did Rockstar say it wasn't going to happen? Anything's possible and I'd much rather see a GTA game in the 80s or something like that, especially seeing how "stale" V felt after telling nearly the same jokes IV told.

With how the games have relied on things like the internet and phones and stuff like that lately, I think it is more likely we will continue to see games set close to when they are released.

I'm sure GTA could work without the internet and phones. I don't see why it couldn't.

It can work (after all, past games did) but I mean Rockstar will probably try to take advantage of modern tech in future games.

Personally I want to see VC either in the mid 90's or in modern times.

I hope they don't. I know it's preference, but like I said before - if GTA is turning more and more into a political/social commentary like South Park, then I'd rather have a game set in, say, the 1980s or 1970s because V's jokes were nearly the same as IV's jokes. "celebrities are vain and social media is pointless lel". I'd rather go back 20 years when there was actual good stuff to joke about and not jokes that revolve around, say, phones or the internet.

^Only reason I don't want the 80's again is because I feel it might end up being to similar to VC and VCS. Though this is assuming if the game went back to Vice City. If it was Carcer City or something then the 70's or 80's would be cool.

There were some gritty parts of the 1980s. Like the rust belt for example, what with the dying industries and high crime rates in Carcer City-esque cities.
