If they had just done that the bare bones plot of gta 5 would never happen.

As far as I know, they don't change the first names in witness protection, only the last names.

Because plot. One thing could have been that they believed that Trevor was going to die and they knew Brad was dead.

Because last names aren't anywhere near as common as first names, there are millions upon millions of Michaels in the world, but a lot fewer Michael Townleys, it's convenient for Michael so that he doesn't have to change the way he's become accustomed to referring to members of his family, but changing the last name is a necessity. Say that if Michael Townley ended up dead during a bank heist in North Yankton and then a Micky Townley suddenly left North Yankton for Los Santos two months after the aforementioned heist some bells would start ringing in Trevor's head, changing his last name to De Santa and letting his family keep their first names is simply the most logical option.

Regardless, Michael's name change isn't what gave him away, it was his tacky catchphrase and his willingness to leave the witness to the jewelry store heist alive to tell the tale on national television, a rookie move to be sure, but then again Michael did believe Trevor long dead at that point when he was forced to rob Vangelico, so it wasn't as though he believed he had any further reason to keep his one-liners to himself any longer.

Speaking of finding Michael in Los Santos, do they list who's married to who in the phonebook, as how Wade mentioned Michael was married to Amanda?

What's a phonebook? Is that an ancient relic used by our ancestors?

OT: Pretty sure he used an online lookup service, it's free and lists relatives, marriage status and to whom etc

I think a a better question is why Wade took an interest in Michael de Santa in the first place. I'm sure there are thousands of Michaels in LS, so why did Wade take enough of an interest in Mike to also search for his family?

B/c that shows you how lazy R* got with the writing of V sloppy story (which is a shame b/c there's so much to work w/.)

Maybe LS really as small as it is for gameplay purposes and there's really only like 20 Micheals living in it?

They're names are quite generic and stereotypical anyway, there were only 2 Michaels in Los Santos with the last name "Townley", imagine how many there are with other surnames.

Trevor was watching the news while butt-f*cking a girl. Now that's ridiculous, the weakest point for sure.

Because it's not easy. Imagine being forced to use different name all of a sudden, sure you'd maybe roll with it for time being, but eventually you'd mess up.

And the whole Michael's witness protection stuff wasn't really done that well.

Exactly this. It wouldn't have mattered if they changed their first names, GTAV's plot would've still happened. When Trevor was watching the TV they didn't even mention the name Michael. The only thing they mentioned was Michael's one-liner, which Trevor immediately recognized. Now it would've probably been a lot harder for Trevor to find Michael if he had changed his first name, because Trevor wouldn't know what to look for. But since he would know Michael's alive he would find him no matter what.

Remember Brad is under six feet of earth under a grave marked "Michael Townley" and the name Michael suits his character.
