Speaking of films, back when they used models as special effects.

And Thomas the train. It's been forever since I saw it, at least when George Carlin was narrating it.

The train crash scene in Martin Scorsese's Hugo uses a model set (a large model, though). Pretty well done.

Remember the line, "Hey honey, I bought tangerines... This guy was selling them on the off ramp by the 2"? I was near an off ramp at a highway the other day and saw a guy selling them.... lolled and had to take a pic: http://i.imgur.com/2ZdIvRZ.jpg

HA! Nice! I think that was the one with Jeremy Renner.

But SNL isn't the same without Fred Armisen and Kriston Wiig.

Does anybody remember Hobby Shops like these? I remember my dad would take me with him when he went to hobby shops to buy things for his model railroad and it was always great fun, going there and seeing all the little buildings and people and hell, even got me into model trains. The hobby shop around where I used to live sadly closed down because nowadays people don't do enough models. Now the closest thing to a hobby shop here is Michaels, and even then that's more arts & crafts. Thank god for conventions.

Watched them all on Netflix... Aaand now I'm gonna watch them all again.

He is the best part of Late Night with Seth Myers. If Fred isn't on for a night, I don't watch it. LOL!

I find SNL a bit boring these days man. I haven't watched an episode in awhileeeeee. Since Ferrell, Wiig and Armisen.. it just isn't the same. I'm also not a fan of some of the newer cast members either. The two girls are not funny at f*cking all. It's also becoming WAY too political for me. f*ck all that.. if I want to watch something like that, I'll turn on C-SPAN.

But yeah, the best way to enjoy SNL now is to watch the The Best Of editions and older seasons. I wish they would update their SNL 2010s on Netflix with some newer episodes.. I'm having withdrawals.

sh*t man, I loved Fey and Fallon on the WUpdate. Well, I love Fey period. I'd have her baby.

The Garbage Pail Kids trading cards, also known as the Sgorbions in Italy. I had the original 80s series when I was a young kid, but even if they're still on sale in the USA, the Topps Company stopped their release in Italy in the 90s.

I never much got into SNL. Not because of the cast, but mostly because I didn't find the jokes funny. Speaking of sketch shows, this was pretty good growing up, watching it with my cousin and all.

re: Missing SNL cast members.
Someone from AMF made a good observation about a year ago about how throughout the long history of that show they go through these phases of good/bad casts. It's true if you've watched the archives (or if you're old enough to have seen them LIVE)

There is one on the street behind my house happening right now.  At one point today the karaoke was soooooo bad.  Block parties are big in this neighborhood.

You don't really see any chain music stores anymore.

Here's a look at a few such things that I've seen in person. WARNING: This may slow down anyone who's still on dial-up.

I remember when every car on our street looked very similar to this:

Spoiler

And they all had this license plate:

Spoiler

I also remember when these rolled down the major commercial streets:

Spoiler

I also saw these two buildings whenever I visited downtown Detroit:

Spoiler

I also remember when every billboard I saw on the major commercial streets looked nearly identical to this (and that the advertisements themselves were painted by hand at the company's warehouse-nowadays, vinyl ads and computers are used):

Spoiler

The city I lived in during my first thirteen years of existence, Southgate, was once the location of two drive-in theaters, both of which closed while I was alive.

This was the first to go (it was replaced by a strip mall that lasted nearly 25 years until it itself was torn down for a Walmart):

Spoiler

I remember climbing up onto the roof of my ranch home some nights in an attempt to watch movies shown at this drive-in for free (it later closed six years after the other drive-in and is now the site of a Meijer store):

Spoiler

These small local storefront theaters (think Mama's Theater in East Los Santos in GTA SA) are also pretty much gone (there's only one left near me that's still showing movies and it's a cheap second-run theater), here's a couple that I saw in person that were torn down since:

Spoiler

Even the early examples of successor to both, the multiplex theater, seem to slowly become extinct as larger megaplexes with stadium seating replaced them:

Spoiler

A now-defunct local appliance store chain once boasted this in their television commercials: "I'll give you five pounds of coffee... if I can't beat your best deal." Here's a store they used to have near my first house (it relocated in the 1980's and this is only a picture from last year):

Spoiler

I remember seeing this very scene in person, as it was only a five-minute walk from my original house:

Spoiler

Long before McDonald's took off, there were tiny white buildings that housed local hamburger restaurants (this somewhat still exists today...look at White Castle):

Spoiler

And I also recall watching new episodes of these on our small TV set in both my original Southgate house and a house our family later moved to in a neighboring city called Wyandotte in 1994 (that house, though wasn't the same one as the one I currently live in):

Spoiler

I also remember when our top 40-or whatever-station had pretty much most of these on their playlist. In addition I remember the Pistons' first season in Auburn Hills, when Isiah Thomas and Dennis Rodman brought the team to their first NBA championship-this is a far cry from today's Pistons, who have been struggling for the past few years, enough to not even make it into the playoffs.

What you just read is a highlight of a child in suburban Detroit in the 1980's and early 1990's-yes, I'm that old.

Speaking of cars...

Not just 1986 Buick Centuries anymore, but just general Buicks. I dunno if they even advertise because the only television I watch is the early morning news before work and all they advertise are Hondas, Toyotas, etc.

Depends on the region. I still see ads for them, albeit most of them are used car commercials.

But hey, I'm glad not to see Buicks as often as I used to.
