What is NationStates?

NationStates is a nation simulation game. You create your own country, fashioned after your own ideals, and care for its people. Either that or you deliberately torture them. It's really up to you.
Click on the Create a Nation link and follow it from there. You'll be asked to choose a name for your nation, a motto, a national animal, and a currency. Then you answer a short questionnaire about your politics. This will determine what sort of nation you end up with: authoritarian or permissive... left-wing or right-wing... compassionate or psychotic... you get the idea. Once your Nation is created, join the GTAForums Region.

Twice a day, you'll be faced with an issue, and need to make a decision as to what to do about it. This determines how your nation evolves.

The World Assembly is the world's governing body. It's your chance to mold the world to your vision, by voting for resolutions you like and scuttling the rest. However, it's a double-edged sword, because your nation will be affected by any resolutions that pass. (Unfortunately you can't obey the resolutions you like and ignore the rest, like real nations.) In other words, it's a hot-bed of political intrigue and double-dealing.

Your nation can join the WA, but it's not compulsory. If you remain outside, you're unaffected by its decisions. If you're ready to mix it up in international politics, though, the WA is for you.

There are two main benefits to WA membership: you can vote on resolutions, and you can endorse other nations in your region, thereby electing a Regional Delegate.

Introduction

Welcome, esteemed colleagues, to NationStates. Our tale takes place in the region of GTAForums Region, discovered by coin-god and organized by fireguy109. Several years ago, GTA Forums was one of the largest, most powerful regions in the world, numbering a hundred strong. Since then, however, the region has fallen into disrepair. Neglect and the disease of "real life" ravaged its nations, almost toppling the once proud giant. But one nation, The United Kingdom of Santos Castillos, stood firm in the face of near disaster, refusing to let the region be claimed by the wastes. Its leader, ~Vic Vance~, kept GTA Forums from vanishing, that one day it might rise again and retake its seat at the center of global politics.

Some of you are new. Some of you remember the old days of the North Pacific raid and Shaffeygate and plenty of delegate drama. But all of you have the potential to make GTA Forums more than the sum of its states, to restore the sense of community and companionship once fostered within its borders.

- The Republic of the 500, region founder

Joining

Many of you had nations in the past. If you'd like to refound them but can't remember their names, the old in-character discussion topic has the most up-to-date region list from before the fall. Otherwise, start by creating a fresh nation. The GTAForums Region is open for all to enter, just click "move {my region} to GTA Forums". Before doing so, though, please use the following form to report your nation's information, or we'll have to fall back to the old password protected system, which is a pain in the butt for everyone. Just post it here then head right in to the region. This way we can keep track of who's who, which is useful for border security, stats, governing, socializing, etc.

*GTAF USERNAME*

Click
(TBH I have no clue if tables still work the way they used to, if this is wrong somebody please tell me and we'll get it fixed).

Government

Everyone is free to run their nation however they please. However, in the interests of regional security, role-play, etc, it is recommended you all join the World Assembly. This way, you can endorse whomever you think would be the best delegate, or leader of the region. Past leaders included K2, Otter, and El Zilcho, but anybody can run for delegate. You can vote for someone by viewing their nation's page and clicking "Endorse {nation}". You can endorse as many people as you want, but only the nation with the most endorsements will become the delegate.

The delegate is the representative of the community. He/she is directly in charge of changing the World Factbook (the info page), handles embassies between GTA Forums and other regions (largely symbolic), and can eject or ban trolls. Their power is proportional to the amount of endorsements they have and for how long they have had them. If you want to overthrow your delegate because he's not doing a good job or something, feel free to switch loyalties - just know that every move the delegate makes costs some of their "influence" or power, so a strong delegate means a safe and up-to-date region.

In the past, we've thrown around various ideas about a council or unified authority to lead the region. This time, we'll be using a "Council of {X}" system. Depending on activity and poll results, we'll figure out how many people to have on it and how they should be elected - I propose 8 leaders and that we have a regional election via private polls on here (if the admins are willing to help), but we could always do the people with the most WA endorsements or something.

I used to play this a few years back. It's kinda fun I guess, but the Randian bias is super f*cking annoying. I may make another for sh*ts and giggles, but I'll inevitably stop attending to it.

I played for a little bit around the time the thread was dying. It'll be fun to start fresh again.

The United States of Fritolaytopia has joined the region. :)

Oh God the memories. :p

anyway, Shaffey's back in action! And, according to the old topic in Writer's Disc. the King has been overthrown.

New Government Declared in Utsoort!

People are celebrating on the streets of Utsoort as the new 'Caliph' of Shaffey, a man by the name of Aalim Ghalifursh finally lands at King Shaffey Int'l Airport (which he promptly renamed 'Revolution Int'l Airport'). Ghalifursh, who had been leading the opposition for the past few months in Shaffey based on his ideals of 'Islamic democracy and law', was escorted to a cemetary to the south of Utsoort to deliver a speech to his new people. [...]

"[The old government] promoted promiscuity, betrayed our people and killed believers, yet supported non-believers. [...] I spit in the face of the government, I will declare the new government. [...] Free housing and free utilities is guaranteed for all believers in Shaffey, and death is guaranteed to all those who support the monarchy."

The 86-year-old man will be the first non-Shaffey in the nation's long history to govern the country.

cool beans.

I used to play Nation States with a group of guys in my polisci classes in college. this was back in like 2007-08.

if I remember correctly, mine was the nation of Hardknockistan where almost everything was geared toward complete military control over every aspect of everyone's lives beginning with pressed servitude. you get to a point where you can decide that every citizen in your country serves in the military from birth until death; like an extreme take on modern-day Sparta. my people were very oppressed and had little freedoms, but our economy was a powerhouse that exported countless megatons of armaments. we also had little trouble in defending our domestic interests or forcing our foreign policy agenda on lesser, hippie nations.

I almost forgot about that game.

the email address associated with Hardknockistan is long gone but I'm gonna' check this sh*t out and see what's new. maybe I'll start another.

Hey, you don't need to be a militaristic powerhouse to be an economic powerhouse!

I don't remember the ins and outs from a couple of years back, but I think you have to be in the WA before you can endorse/be endorsed. Maybe?

I was in before and still hold a top 5% in the world for endorsements badge, but my application this time hasn't been accepted yet and I see no way to endorse nations.

Ed: Fran, your link still points to your first nation :)

Should be a small box at the bottom of their nation overview, but both of you need to be in the WA.

The Queendom of Cloudina rises again!

http://www.nationsta...nation=cloudina

The Queendom of Cloudina is a massive, safe nation, ruled by Claudia Cloudina III with a fair hand, and remarkable for its irreverence towards religion. The compassionate, hard-working, intelligent population of 3.911 billion Cloudinans enjoy a sensible mix of personal and economic freedoms, while the political process is open and the people's right to vote held sacrosanct.

It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Social Welfare, Education, and the Environment. It meets every day to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Cirrus City. The average income tax rate is 71%. The private sector is almost wholly made up of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, although the government is looking at stamping this out.

Convicted murderers are free to walk the streets provided they attend rehabilitation classes, there have been reports of people marrying housepets, the government is giving peace a chance, and the nation has welcomed its expats back with open arms. Crime -- especially youth-related -- is totally unknown, thanks to a well-funded police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. Cloudina's national animal is the Cat, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its currency is the Pound.
