Preface

Spoiler

The Technique:
How to bypass the Musket's reload time by a large margin.

New Method. Much, much easier than my method. Brought to my attention by Arya35:

1. Fire the weapon at a target.

2. After firing the weapon pull up the weapon wheel and switch to either a melee weapon or am explosive. Will not work with switching to any other weapon class, even fists.

3. Now either bring up the weapon wheel and swap back to the Musket, or swap to a different weapon if desired.

Congratulations! You have successfully skipped the reload animation!

Old Method (may still be somewhat useful)

Spoiler

Be sure to let me know what you think of the technique, and if you have anything else to add concerning strategies for this beast of a skill cannon, be sure to let me know. You will get full credit for any discoveries.

Thanks for reading! I hope this works for you or helps you in PvP in any way, and I hope you have some fun blowing off some other player's heads old school style!

Feel free to discuss any aspect of the Musket in this thread and tell me what you think of it, especially now with this technique.

I just sit behind a wall and shoot people, if they get close I switch to the auto-shotgun, none of this technique stuff. It's certainly my ideal weapon.

Domislive will steal this :(

But great find nos :) I myself am a huge fan of bolt actions (that's why I (was) rank 438 in the world for the myosin Nagant on WAW without a scope) and even though the musket isn't a bolt action, it's the next best thing.

Anyway this tactic has turned it into my best gun ;)

Well, this is just a little trick for if you're out in the open with it or if you wish to bypass the reload time.

This will prove useful.

Good, good.

Go forth my friend, and destroy the competition with Old World Glory!

just been playing a bit more and experimented with the range on this thing, seems to be the furthest shooting weapon apart from the sniper and the rpg, hit a guy at the movie studio from weazel plaza with it with a 1 hit kill flawlessly.
also you begin to appreciate the long reload time, it adds to the challenge and the fun. if you have played fistful of frags on pc you get what i am talking about :D

new fav weapon by a long shot (pun not intended)

Why not just use the weapon you get the first time you bring up the wheel?

Because you desire to use the Musket.

I explicitly stated that using the weapon you selected when exiting the roll can be a good option in a pinch.

It doesn't, trust me. Plus you're not stuck in that 6 second animation defenseless and have the option of shooting them with the selected weapon.

Using the Musket is as fun as the Firework launcher. They have their own awesome and unique characteristics. The Musket is an excellent one shot kill weapon if used correctly. I stopped using the Assault Shotgun and decided to only use the Musket for my preferred shotgun weapon for now. Lol so many people don't like it because of the fire rate. The range, accuracy and damage make up for it. :)

Nice guide
However it might be good to note that you can reload cancel this weapon easily as well by combat rolling as soon as your characters done pouring in the powder and he puts it away

Does the musket lock on in easy aim? I was trying it out in a mission and it didn't seem to, but I was at staying at longer range than usual due to that reload time... I'm not complaining, just curious. The crew are discussing a free aim musket and sabre tdm and I'm wondering whether switching to free aim will actually be necessary.

I have been spreading freedom to red coats for the past few hours with a musket.  They brought a minigun to a musket fight. They lost.

That is good to note, but this trick may be able to get you into a roll a little sooner in a pinch.

Yes, it does autolock. I was shooting up cops and people all morning.

funny how there is a whole section devoted to "Guides and Strategies" yet this is being left in the open section when it clearly belongs in "Guides and Strategies". this one is no different then the others that have been moved before.

The Technique:
How to bypass the Musket's reload time by a large margin.

First, have the Musket out, and have a target. (Obviously)

Then, fire the weapon. Whether you go for a headshot or not is up to you, just try your best to hit your attacker. (also obvious)

Here's where the technique I've developed comes into play:

1. After firing the weapon, your character will begin to lower the gun in order to reload. Immediately after firing you will need to bring up the weapon wheel, use your analog stick to select a different weapon, then initiate a combat roll.

2. If you did this correctly, which you should have no problem doing, you will exit the roll with the weapon you selected in hand. You may now bring the weapon wheel up once again and select the Musket. During the roll your enemy will not be able to auto-lock you, which will also give you an advantage.

A quick switch or 2 presses of LB to go unarmed and back to armed should work for any weapon.  Also, combat roll is pretty pointless in free-aim.

I was surprised at how good this gun was!  Thought it was going to be terrible.
