Listen, they could have did a much more huge world with PS3 / Xbox 360 with GTA:SA graphics, but they preferred to make new engine, physics, etc. It could be the same now, the world may not be that much bigger than GTA V but they may improve graphics, physics, interiors, etc a lot. Time will tell.

The thing is that there are much more things than just the brute size of the map.

I'd like to see the game world size bigger, but with properly designed content and quality throughout.
For instance, GTA IV map quickly comes into the mind, for not only how interesting it is, but importantly how well laid it is.

I'd rather they keep the map about the same size as V's but focus on making it look better and more alive. It's on much powerful hardware so it will look better and they'll be able to add more interiors and all sorts of other little details.

Imagine going from LS to LC without a loading screen one day. Not in a year or two. But a few more years down the road, when the consoles are mastered (PC is no obstacle, obviously). We could have something truly gargantuan on our hands.

You do realize PS4/XB1 have PC architecture, right? What do you mean "when consoles are mastered (PC is no obstacle)"? Don't tell me you're one of those PC master race guys..

What does that have to do with anything? Current console hardware is already making devs cut corners like mad while trying to explain away those changes as "artistic or cinematic" design choices. Regardless of x86 architecture.

The PC itself has no limitaitons. What people can run on their PCs does, however. So that will be taken into consideration. But the PC as a platform, a high-end PC, does not have the limitations of a Xbox One or Playstation 4. For obvious reasons that have been established for a few generations now. "Master race" elitism has nothing to do with it.

Oh, and by "consoles being mastered" I mean developers getting familiar with all that the consoles have to offer. Similar to how devs like Rockstar and Naughty Dog managed to get so much out of last-gen hardware, since they knew it so well thanks to all the years of experience with it. The same will happen with the PS4/XB1.

the very small size of the gameworld

How the f*ck is the gameworld "very small"? The Crew is probably gonna be boring as f*ck outside the city. From the looks of it, the countryside in that game isn´t very detailed.

..as if the countryside of GTA V on X360 was detailed.

I don't expect they will change the map for V on the PC and next gen when intially released, BUT....

... remember all the debate about we'd get just Lost Santos, or San Fierro and Las Venturas too? Perhaps that's a DLC* for the future that expands the map?

* More likely to be sold on disc due to size reasons though I guess.

It's not just about the size of the world, it's also (and much more for some people, myself included) about QUALITY. There are far bigger worlds out there, and hardware was never the limit on last gen consoles when it comes to the size alone. Tone down the graphics, use smaller textures and less objects to clear up disc space, or simply repeatedly use the same assets, and you can't build a very, very huge world on those consoles.. ask Just Cause 2. The difference is - Rockstar wants quality. They don't want endless jungles or deserts with repeating villages that all look the same, they want to give every place the character it needs to look distinctive compared to the rest of the map.

There was even that game called Fuel, 5000 square miles of it. And as boring as it is big, with some really bad elements in it's design.

So when it comes to GTA, I don't think we'll see a massive increase in map size, at least not in the number of cities. One city takes a lot of time and money to build, so having more in one game would only make sense if they decided to add an existing one (with some changes of course). Otherwise, it would simply take too much time and money, and it's not worth it for them (yes they earned billions, but they still want to control their expenses regardless). What we may see is more countryside, which is easier to make, requires less details and can be done much faster. And if they decide to update current map for the next GTA, all the better. Imagine the next game set in Las Venturas, but with the map being connected to V map.. half the work for Rockstar/double the fun for players.

As for The Crew, it seems to be a good map so far, but let's wait and see some proper footage from different cities to see how big they are, and how different they are. I expect to see a lot of repetitive design when it comes to city buildings in that game and I hope I won't be disappointed. Also, Crew is a racing game, and a multiplayer one, that won't feature many, many details that Rockstar has to put in to make the map feel alive.

Of course I expected to see once again, fan boys bashing other open world games when compared to GTA V.

I expect it to stay the same just more detailed.

Also not sure why you guys aren't giving The Crew a chance, first it was Watch_Dogs now this.. what's next? Halo 5? Far Cry 4??

GTA V on Next-Gen would be the benchmark for others to strive for. Afterall, R* has used new platforms in the past to set benchmarks before. Then they would release a new title years later with nearly everything in the previous title and then some.

Just imagine the XB1 and PS4 GTA V and add pretty much everything in it times 10. Although since it is a rehash, the real question is will they use this engine or develop a new one?

then keeping the size of the gta 5 gameworld would be not using next gen to it's fullest potential.

That doesn't make sense. They aren't going to add land just because its coming to the next gen. Its the same game, just with better graphics and other slight improvements. Its not meant to use the "next" gen to its fullest potential, its only mean to please those who are playing the "next" gen and want to see better graphics out of V.

By the way, its not a "next" gen when its already out. Its current gen.

If R* attempted to create a world comparable to the crew with as much detail as V we would all be old and grey before it ever sees the light of day. The development time to make a game world that vast would be ridiculous.

The Crew took the same amount of time as GTA V did. I'm sure it wasn't because of map size, but because of detail and copyright issues.

So if Rockstar were to make a game as detailed as The Crew is. it wouldn't take so long to map it.

Spoiler

EDIT: Lol. If GTA ever becomes as detailed as this:

I will literally jump out of my pants.

]Well, it would, but not as long as you'd think. It only took two years to map GTA V.

I am yet to play the crew but judging by all the gameplay that's been released so far it pales in comparison to the detail R* put into V. As i stated the size is not the issue but the details that would blow out the development time so i don't know what your point is there.

While i don't believe you it took 2 years to map GTAV (unless you can provide a reliable source) let's assume your right and extrapolate the square footage of what V appears to be compared to the crew.

By your information then it would take R* close to 10 years to create the game world alone. No very feasible both financially or in terms of development time.

BIGGER MAP =/= FUN GAMEPLAY

It's actually the opposite. I want more details within a small space. People doing stuff, interactive NPC's, more activities, etc.

My opinion is, with the same size map, Rockstar can use a lot more resources into making the game even more detailed than they would be able to with a map that is much larger. Despite the power of the PS4/XBONE/PC, putting as much resources in as you can to make the graphics that detailed and (hopefully better frame rate, but I still see it only running at 30fps) the game just run that much smoother, a much larger map probably would be asking too much, IMO.

Frame rate will be ok, lets just hope we dont get 1 fps, it would look awkward for the Johnny death scene.

'People doing stuff'

As I've seen in Watch Dogs, this can actually be incredibly repetitive and makes it feel even worse, like these people just stand there waiting for people to pass by to carry out these actions.

They are doing a great job already of giving us a PS4 version. I have said it before on here , I'm staying on the fence with getting to excited about this but theres so many people saying its just a port and not going to be any different. http://www.eurogamer...4-tech-analysis

Read that!

As for making the map bigger it can be done by adding different islands? This wouldn't be hard I guess seen as they are doing many upgrades to it already. Hold on before you see this won't happen because I'm not saying it will , simply it can happen and wouldnt be beyond Rockstars capabilities.

I would like a island with a medium size airport slighty smaller then Los Santos International. Would also be great if we saw the aircraft navy carrier back in the docks or at sea.

One thought could be if the story DLC was set in North Yankton we can go back and forth between the two in free roam ?

Maybe we'll get more interiors. It's one way to make an already existing map bigger and add more depth to the world. Right now there are a bunch of boxes taking up space. If R* could open them up, the world would be larger.

I really hope we get more interiors, because painted textures are my worst fear.

I've seen and read just about anything about that game and I can tell that the map of The Crew is pretty much on par with GTA V in terms of detail. There are many areas out there on that map that appear to lack detail because it's so big that it actually has many areas of just plain wilderness, unlike in GTA V where Rockstar left almost nothing untouched. I've seen people camping in the countryside of The Crew in a demo

Technically the map of The Crew is the best and most diverse map you could experience in a video game. Apart from the wilderness which includes forests, grassy fields, mountains, snowy areas, swamps and deserts that are accurately located and crafted like their real life counterparts, there are 16 different cities all build and crafted the same way, uniquely, like their real life counterparts. Some of the cities are LA, NY, LV, Chicago, Detroit, Seattle, Miami to name just a few. Apart from that there will be iconic locations like MT Rushmore and what not. New York in The Crew is about the same size as LC in GTA IV, taking about 90 mins to cruise from there to LA according to Ubisoft. The map size is estimated about 5000 square miles (still not a hard confirmed fact) compared to the 50 of GTA V, that's about 100 maps of GTA V mashed up togehter!!!!

That's all techincal stuff, because practically exploring that map won't be anywhere near as fun and excting as it would be in a GTA game.

Several problems with the OP.

1. He's comparing a game which would have been developed for CG and PC specifically from day 1.

2. He has no idea what the map of the Crew is going to be like. It'll most likely be like TDU, a few populated areas dotted around the map with long roads of nothingness on a larger scale.

3. GTA V was developed for previous gen consoles so there is a huge limiting factor there.

4. Compared to previous free roam games GTA V is huge. Please go back and play Vice City and then tell me GTA V is small.

BTW:

5 huge cities.

huge playground in between with lots of things to do.

lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of villages, including bigger villages/micro cities

All eco-systems present. dessert, mountains, snowcountry, tropics, oceans with islands, huge lakes, rivercountry etc. all types of terrain u can think of.

flying from one side to the other in commercial jet at highest speed should take at least 10 minutes prefferably more.

train system that connects everything (high speed trains, otherwise the will generally not be used often)

serious wilderness this time. Huge!! meaning no roads nearby and plenty interresting stuff to do. mountain slopes with nothing to do like in GTA V is absolutely not acceptable. u could at least make a village on the mountain or something so there is something to go to..

:p

but Rockstar will never make that.

because Rockstar is now Cockstar.

I'd prefer either 2 cities with countryside between them with about the same level of detail is V --or-- Something the same size as V but having access all buildings that are open to the public like shops, banks, libraries, bars, clubs, hospitals etc and also some private private property like houses, offices that would obviously cause a wanted level if caught.

Not to mention you're effectively saying R* employees are cocks because they couldn't make what you wanted due to the fact that they were developing a game for hardware that's almost 10 years old.

Since this is going to use next gen technology or "current gen" dosn't that mean that the very small size of the gameworld will lack from what next gen can really handle?

I mean look at the crew

www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxmhf3m9dX0

I don't know about anyone else but this looks 10 times as big as all the land of gta 5, and i know you can debate that the game is less detailed etc than gta 5 but still, this looks mindblowinly amazing if this is what next gen is capable of then keeping the size of the gta 5 gameworld would be not using next gen to it's fullest potential.

as gta 5 seems extra tiny in comparison to this.

is the crew cloud based to allow for such a big world?

Du, Hypa inte för GTA V next gen... Jag har redan sagt i andra trådar att det kommar vara samma som Old Gen fast nya grafiker och nytt mechanics

they optimized it for the ps3/xbox360 and with minimal effort (graphics improvement), they can earn another hundred billion dollars.

Austin+Powers+Dr+Evil+Mike+Myers+100+Bil

It is as good as it can be on the ps3/xbox360... sure, next gen consoles COULD handle more, but is it really that neccessary? They will earn so much more money with pretty much the same game but with better graphics. It's smart of them...  "efficiency is intelligent laziness" ;)

They will make GTA 6 and this will hopefully make dem consoles smoke!

GTA VI comes out you will be praising V, meaning VI will be so more terrible then V?  Otherwise why praise V??  V is great graphic + detail wise and I would rate it 10/10 for ps3 standards. even better then that because omg its so amazing and this ON A PS3 OMG OMG OMG!!  G R E A T !!! physics nad mechanics are also great. however. the rest i would rate 2/10 or lower because its utterly crap.  I would never praise V ever. Everytime I play it it dissapoints me tremandously. The map sucks so bad. the city is great. but driving around in one city gets boring and there's nowhere to go to. there's nothing. all roads lead to nothing and the they take u back to the city.

It's a racing game, how can you compare it to GTA? In GTA the whole map needs to be detailed including tops of the buildings and underwater. In racing game like that you only take care about roads and limited surrounding around them.
