He played the obnoxious, poetry-writing anarchist Rick in The Young Ones alongside his friend, Adrian Edmonson.

The duo later went on to star in Bottom and he was also known for appearances in shows including Blackadder and The New Statesman.

He was left seriously ill after a quad bike accident in 1998 which left him in a coma for several days.

R.I.P Rik. He was a great personality indeed.

One of about five celebrities on this planet I could actually tolerate. He made even a miserable bastard like me cry with laughter with pretty much every movement he made or word he spoke. A damn shame.

Oh man, that's a shame. I used to love "The Young Ones" and "Bottom". I could never get into "The New Statesman", but still. Damn shame he died.

Have all The Young Ones and Bottom on DVD. Couldn't get enough of the shows, shame they only had 2-3 seasons (although better that than drag on and become unfunny). The chemistry between Rik and Ade was class.

A funny clip:

Well this is a shock. Only 56 years old, what a loss to the comedy industry.

Thoughts with his family and friends.

I grew up watching the Loved Ones and loved Rick, only person who was better was Neil but I loved the University Challenge and how someone wrote a "P" infront of his name so the host introduces him as "prick".

(Copy-Paste from locked topic, with extra) This just sucks, I'll have to go on a bender of watching Bottom, The Young Ones, The New Statesman and Filthy Rich and Catflap now.

Curse that holiday I took instead of going to see Bottom Live.

The best Bottom Live scene

The man was a comedy legend and he helped shape my sense of humour and adolescence a great deal. From the Young Ones to Filthy, Rich and Catflap, then of course the absolutely incredible Bottom, he was simply one of a kind.

Ade Edmonson nailed it:

"There were times when Rik and I were writing together when we almost died laughing. They were some of the most carefree, stupid days I ever had, and I feel privileged to have shared them with him. And now he's died for real. Without me. Selfish bastard."

Rik would have loved that.
