Personally I think the 'present day' setting for GTA games is getting a little overdone and really hope the next game is set in the past, the 90s would be my choice. It would be disappointing for the next GTA game to again be set in the present day since we have had no HD era games set in the past yet.

90s Boston & Rhode Island loosely based on the movie 'The Town'

I would like to see a game set in London in the '60s or San Fierro in the '70s.

I`d like to play a GTA that starts out in the 70`s then the SP story goes through the different eras 70`s,80`s,90`s all the way up until present day,I doubt this would ever happen but it would be pretty cool if it ever did.

Late 80s, maybe England to mix things up a bit?

I feel Rockstar do it best when they go period. The difference in era makes those games more memorable because it's not what we're used to and creates a more unique experience. So anything from the 1970s up, new location of course.

I wanna see the '80s please, espeically considering how GTA is focusing more on social commentary as opposed to actual jokes for their source of humor and jokes. With that being said, I'd like to hear some jokes about the Soviets and Reagan and big haired new wave as opposed to the political & cultural jokes we heard in V that were almost directly ripped from IV.

I voted 70's. God damn it Rockstar bless me with a 70's San Fierro.

But looking at this poll I need to ask why such an appeal for the present day setting? Having constant present day settings, you won't see such a big jump in difference in culture. You'll still see a jump, but everything you see in IV is pretty much parodied in V to a greater or less extent.

I would also love to see the '70s (especially the early ones) in SF, because if done right it would paint beautiful picture of america. Disgruntled soldiers coming back from Vietnam, where US got the first serious kick in the groin, not seeing the place for themselves in apparently the same, yet changed country. Motorcycle gangs forming around to deal with heroin and give the world that made them angry the finger. Last population of hippies dying around drugged on cheap stuff and free love and corporate america being born over them all.

And inside that mess the last of the cowboys (like Kowalski from Vanishing Point), guy who wants, yet can't find place for himself in the new world.

Present day and new location, no more Liberty City, not even Vice City or any of those who have not been remade in HD, the series needs a completely fresh location if it wants to move forward even more.

Why not? Present day modern setting offers for a lot more possibilities than classic settings which would be more limited. I ask you the same thing, since we had 4 cities in past classic eras, why would you want more of them?

Why have a "boring" culture rich era like the 70's when we can have jokes about social networking shoved in our faces every 5 minutes. Wah wah GTA can't work without the mobile phone feature and internet.

I can only speak for myself man but I am still waiting for a current era game with as much scope as GTA San Andreas had in it`s time but comparative to today`s standards. So if they give me a current world setting GTA with more than three cities and cram it full of awesome then f*ck yeah let`s go back to the 70`s,60`s or wherever but until this ideal is done I want them to stay in the present.

Do we really need everything to be bigger than "the size and scope of San Andreas"? I mean the entire concept of that happening is based purely on opinion. If anything 50+ side missions and 3+ cities tends to lead to half assed missions and locations (do we really need to go back to tiny as f*ck cities just to say we've got more of them?). If you ask me, IV and V did a good enough job at blowing SA out of the water.

Plus I can't think of any four cities that are as, or more, iconic than LA, SF and LV that are even close enough in geography to logically throw together in the same map. Maybe say a less iconic city thrown in with a major one (e.g. Throw Oakland in with SF, or throwing in San Diego with LS), but I can't imagine three minor cities with something else major. The most they can get to that is putting pretty much the entire Midwest in the one map, and even then most of the cities their are very much the same.

I for one would enjoy a late-80s early 90's Miami or "vice city" rather. Revolvers, LTDs, cocaine. Yes.

Though I'd be fine with a modern day version as well. Vice City needs to be next on their list.

Wow San Fierro on the 70's must be awesome.

I would like if Rockstar does an open world game on the 50's. Yes another one, because I don't know if GTA could suit on that age.

But I think that we are going to back to the 80's in Vice City on the next GTA

Look at the cultural/political jokes in GTA 4. Now look at them in GTA 5. See a difference? Didn't think so.

I don't think the 80's would work again for a GTA game, they already used all the best of the 80's for Vice City and Vice City Stories.

I would love a late 70s Liberty City but I know it is too soon to go back there. 70s San Fierro sounds good to me.

I would like GTA to go back to the past for real modern day is some sh*t

I the 70's would work well GTA has never explored it I mean you got Vietnam vets, Nixon and watergate, Disco, and so much more it would be great to experience it in GTA. 70's San Fierro or LC would be cool

The 80s could also work we got a taste of it in VC and VCS but it was all sunny I want to see the 80s from another lens. You got Reagan focusing on taking down the Soviets and ending communism and less focus on economic issues  You got the factories in the midwest shutting down, Rust Belt cities struggling, and the Crack epidemic 80's Carcer city would be nice. The 80's with a darker side it wasn't all just sunshine

I really want the 90s but if the next GTA is in the 70s or 80s that would be good too

Oddly enough I want a GTA taking place in the near future (2020s). It would be interesting to see what Rockstar could do with parodies and the atmosphere.

Since the next major installment is going to be in Vice City, I honestly don't want to go back to the 80's. We've done that twice now. In all honesty, I want to see Vice City in modern day. By the time Rockstar decides to release it, it will be further into the future and who knows what will happen between now and then?

I'd like it set in either the present day or late 1970's around 1977, 1978 or 1979.

The proof is in the truth, Uncle-Brother. Let it happen. Seriously, before R* creates a new major city or decides to re-visit LV or SF, they have to make it in Vice City. We haven't seen it since 2006, which was 8 years ago and will be longer than that after VI is released. Rockstar has to take the opportunity to create the next major installment in Vice City, more so over SF or LV. Sure, you may argue that since SF and LV didn't get much attention in SA, they should be visited, but the next gen installment needs to be in a place that would look outstanding in next gen graphics. You may have the San Fierro Bay and the Las Venturas Casinos, but Vice City has more to offer for next gen. Neon lights on a swarm of the buildings, the swamps, and the beautiful sun to enjoy while walking on Ocean Beach. Vice City is the perfect place to set a next gen title before SF or LV, and if Rockstar doesn't take this opportunity, well, they're fools.

Leave the old school theme with contemporary titles like LA Noire :)

I think it should be present day, or close to present day from here on out. I can`t picture a world anymore where cell phones and the internet dont exist in the game! It would suck to actually walk into a dealership to buy your car when you could just pull out your phone! And if it was set before the 1970s, we would have to rely on payphones! Thats a No No!

Just kidding. I`d love to see an HD rendering of Vice City set in the modern day.

Oh, my god, I am so relying on my iPhone that I will die as a plant without water if you take it from me. I need to write a sms and post my f*cking breakfast on the instagram, because I won't be able to eat it otherwise. Sad truth is we're getting into idiocracy, turning into mindless creatures looking at the phones all the time. All eras had their drugs: opium, heroine, cocaine, PCP, etc. Apparently we got FB, Instagram and Twitter. Seriously sometimes I don't want to live on this planet anymore.

Present day is what will kill that game eventually. Satire will be getting weaker and the jokes will be forced and not funny. While IV didn't had the best social commentary in the world it was still pretty witty. We got domestic terrorists, influence of russian organized crime, american agenda about soldiers fighting in someone else's war and similar stuff. V got it messed up, Internet is weak and the satire is forced terribly (I didn't find anything real funny there and to be honest the internet felt forced), we got cults, PMCs and corrupted government. Are these the topic GTA should venture in? In my opinion no and since new game will be out in the period on 5 years, we can rely on the commentary being weaker and weaker.

Setting the game in some different era, could help with that. In 3D era only one game was set in the present day (III), while the rest being in the past and only two games were set close to each other (VC and VCS). In HD era two games can work, although the V is much weaker, but I can't see and I wouldn't like to see next game set in present day.
