Here's the funniest thing about these forums - nobody understands the concept of "agreeing to disagree". We think that if someone shares a different opinion, we must correct them. That's not the case.

SA is perfect for some, not for others. 5 is perfect for some, not for others. In neither case does ones preference on map size or density play any role in the quality of the game.

I like to slow the game down, especially out in the more rural areas. Stick to the speed limit, follow traffic laws.. makes the place feel bigger. Going offroading helps make the map feel huge. And by offroading i don't mean jumping off cliffs in a Turismo, i mean grabbing a stock seminole, or mesa, or even some random SUV, and traversing some of the hilly areas. You'll feel alone in no time.

Exactly my thoughts OP!

All I ever wanted was that RDR feeling of being alone, far away from home...

Heck, even SA got this right.

Having a nice open area is nice but it blowed in sa when u flip ur car amd there are no cars for forever. Imo I spend most of my time outside ls and it feels nice and big. In sp it seems bigger because there is more to do.

It always felt pretty big to me.  I guess it's the windy roads that we had to take to get from city to city.  In 5, it's a straight shot everywhere unless you go up vinewood hills.

take a boat out into the ocean until you can't see the coastline any more. i did that once. theres nothing out there. nothing spawns. just empty.

Would've been better if there were cargo ships coming into Port of Los Santos, US Navy aircraft carriers, fishing boats, recreational boats etc. Ocean is waste :/

I can't put my finger on it, but something about the countryside just feels off.  Like R* overloaded it with too many objects or something.

SandyShores-GTAV-overview.jpg

Most of that whole area is "city" so it doesn't even feel like you are in the countryside.  When I'm there, I feel like i'm in more of a vacation spot than the middle of nowhere.  I think that R* put way too much stuff in the countryside to make it seem bigger, but they actually made it seem smaller.

That particular area is suppose to be like that the redneck sh*thole where Trevor lives.

it needs more banjos and moonshine.. maybe some greasy stained wife beaters and squirrel...

anyway... it feels like hick town, USA to me...

literally what i thought before this game came out, also believed car tuning was going to be like midnight club LA and the map was going to be bigger and more activities, but you know R* likes to overhype things XD

No and no. It's already been explained why it feels bigger primarily. It's the draw distance. Buy San Andreas on PC, download a mod (or do it yourself) that alters draw distance and prepare to be shocked.

The desert was originally bigger but it had to be condensed for our out-dated consoles.

Then why did they do it right with SA?  It felt like you were driving for miles in the desert.

The field of view in San Andreas is reduced by a lot, in GTA V the field of view is huuuuuuuuuge.

Look it up. Also, yes Rockstar said that they had to cut down on the desert so the consoles could run it.

There are two problems which give this feeling.

1. Its only southern San Andreas. Its hot and there are no grass plains, big forests and no snowy areas.
This gives the feeling that it is small map. Even that it isnt.

2. There is only one city. In San Andreas you would drive out of the city to a purpose; another city.

In Online you can only make a tour and you are back where you started.

If you could drive to another city, with another biome (like forest/plains area) you would have the feeling of a better country side

I love that commercial on tv making it seem that you are alone and in the middle of nowhere in the Grand Senora Desert. So ironic.

They neglected to add a large, dense forested area like in SA.  Idk if many people remember but there were so many wooded areas that you could essentially get lost in,,,not to mention the desert of bone country actually felt like a desert

i agree.  You never really feel in the middle of no where like SA made you,,,maybe they'll fix that with 6

No less so than your own post, to be honest.

It should be obvious that people won't be able to appreciate the size of the map when they're speeding across it in super cars, helicopters or planes, but yet threads requiring people to be reminded of that (and other things) still get made. sh*t happens.

When I look at the screens posted here of SA,
I see amazing, charming, varied level design
which looks more interesting than GTA V.

I am totally fine with how it is tho'...

It was the render fog that made SA feel so huge. Being up in that bay town above San Fierro (Bayside?) felt so far away from Los Santos, while Paleto Bay in V doesn't actually feel all that far.

If you get rid of the render fog in SA and go to Bayside though, you can clearly see the buildings in Los Santos, and the illusion is broken.

if you can't see very far, you imagine distances as being much greater than they really are.

Serious question.

Although it hasn't been done to any GTA game so far. Can Rockstar increase our current map with a DLC? Add a chunk of new land somewhere.

It's a huge long shot, but I'd like to ask anyone here who might have game programming and development experience.

I marked out some areas which could be used. I used the east coast because there's nothing on the edge of the map but empty hills or beaches which could be replaced by merging more landmass and adding dirt roads going through them there. The underwater sections would only be moved to the new edge. The west coast has a highway so having that big ocean view counts towards it.

Also, look at the northern and southern added land. It could work as a canyon such as:

Trees man! Trees! Every tree in SA has been chopped down except for a half-dozen or so at the base of Chiliad's north face. If the game had forests it would chop the map further into sections, like some of the mountains do, making it feel bigger. Also, the forest interiors would feel much larger since vehicles must go slow and visibility is reduced to meters.

I think Grapseed is the closest to countryside as it gets. Thats my favorite part of the map. I wish Grapseed was twice as big as it is.

GTA V's countryside is flat... I mean it feels like you drive on a large plain. Only Chillad and rivers make a difference.

In GTA SA's countryside, there are lot of hills, rivers and forrests. I like GTA SA's countryside more.

The extra northern city is supposed to be Sacramento.

BTW, it's unfinished.

Youre dreaming. Current gen could never support anything that big. I dont even think next gen would unless you didnt want any detail at all. Talk about lots of room that would be so bland and boring
