There is no real 'best' GTA - as everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

But anyways, I shall exclude the ones I haven't played, so this is my personal ranking of the games:

1. Vice City
2. IV
3. GTA3
4. GTAV
5. San Andreas
6. Vice City Stories
7. Liberty City Stories
8. The Ballad of Gay Tony
9. The Lost & Damned
10. Chinatown Wars
11. GTA2

You know me, GTA V all the way, it's a combination of the best things from the series.

I wonder what best things were combined there, because it's pretty mediocre in every term.
Jesus f*cking christ, you can't post anything positive about GTA V anywhere in this GTA dedicated forum without getting shot down in flames. It's sad, really.
That is getting shot down in flames to you? Questioning one's opinion and then posting your own? If CantThinkofOne's comment was directed towards IV with Tycek still saying what he said, I doubt you would have said anything at all. Just keep your mouth shut, please?

Why?

Because it was the best one... I liked the map of 3 better... but you can't win them all

Isn't CJ the biggest monkey of them all?

Didnt play V yet, but San Andreas is my favorite one atm (even though for what i see, i dont think v will surpass it, but we will see). The map, the vehicles, the characters, the amount of side missions.. it was just amazing how big the change was from VC. the game was huge, and the setting was pretty new and original (i dont remember any good game focused in ganglife back then).

The story, while it might have some forgiving little plot holes (and for being in a 3d era game),was spot on, at least with the age i was when i first played it.

So basically, i cant complain about a thing about SA, it didnt have MP, but SAMP and MTA make up for it, i had a blast and very good memories from them.

You know I see you saying that an awful lot, but I don't agree. Just because GTA IV focuses more on story doesn't mean its gameplay isn't to the standard of GTA V's.

Side missions (to me anyway) are one of the most important aspects of a GTA game and that was something I felt GTA V dropped the ball on. I loved all of GTA IV's, but I only like the arms trafficking in GTA V.

GTA IV also had the perks from friends which enchanced the experience like being able to use Dwayne's back up in free roam or mayhem with Packie's bombs. For me GTA IV's gameplay is at least of a similar quality even if it doesn't have as many features.

Maybe its just me. But i don't get why people even like GTAIV so much. Maybe it was because I didn't have a ps3 and a copy of the game at launch.

I was excited for the trailer, but when I played it.....

I came from san andreas to >

no planes

no customization

no parachuting (until dlc)

no tanks

Was expecting >

all of above

more interiors

hanging on cars

a bunch of crazy sh*t

And in return i just realized they stripped that stuff, added a phone (ok cool feature) friends calling you (not so cool after a while) - television and taxi rides. Its was basically like GTA III with better graphics imo and I don't care for that, not even if the story is oscar worthy. The missions were all drive here > shoot this > drive person back. Have any of you played The Getaway on ps2? That game imo is on the same level as IV with ps2 graphics.

You have to realize also that the rockstar evolved the sandox alot more since IV. Just playing ELC the other day with no weapon wheel was just painful. But they didn't start using that till red dead. And adding more random events, better/smarter police now added in GTAV. Lets face it police are pretty damm stupid pre V.

So i don't see how people even put IV above V -  because technically IV is so out of date now. Especially its online part. And if Liberty city was re-visited now with all the features of V it would be dead and buried.

(edit) I know GTA SA is my fav and is sort of a contradictory, but I don't see how people rate IV above V in terms of how far its come.

It's your problem since you were expecting most of the things from SA to be back. Truth is game is threatened like that by "fans" who started with SA and wanted IV to be SA 2. Rockstar had to make game for complete new generation using new engine so it was natural that they had to cut some features (some of them were cut, because they were just bad -RPG stats or unnecessary in game containing just one city - IV).

Hype and expectations will always kill game if you can't open your mind for something new. And some people did and they love IV. So it's quite easily to put IV over V, simply because IV is much more refined, better game made with love, which apparently R* started to lose a bit.

I didn't really see it as a problem when I initially thought - ps3 = better hardware = more stuff to do in sandbox games.

Overall i was expecting all SA stuff, but more importantly more stuff in game in general. The gym/body type and that stuff they could lose for the sake of IV. But hardly no interiors? About 4 outfits? Really? Why though? Who in life wears just 4 outfits? (apart from my dad).

They cut stuff out at the time for IV put as you can see they put it right back in with V (and learning from what they did with RDR and MP3).

And you say more "refined"?? You steered clear of what I mentioned about weapon wheel and police improvements which i expected anyway. This is whats more refined which betters & changes the pace of the game completely.

Cut and paste missions that are equivalent to gta online missions. They showed off the dialogue between characters while driving waaay too much. Most people phase out of those convos anyway, and those audio files take up a lot of disk space. What exactly does IV have to offer on the gameplay front? Apart from the phone.

Your post exactly shows how much do you know about the game. Not much. IV outfits? Really? Hardly no interiors?

RDR was the first game from Rockstar Games to have weapon wheel and it was after IV so another of your points is bullsh*t. Too much driving? Because in SA you have to walk from point to point. It's no wonder you didn't see anything if you were so blinded. No point in debating you either, since all you can say is some points taken out of nowhere.

Your posts shows how you cant scroll up on your mouse, you cant read, you couldn't answer the question on what does IV have to offer on the gameplay front - and your remedial.

I already said RDR introduced weapon wheel -  if your carpal tunnel fat fingered hand could reach for the mouse and scroll up to read when i said "You have to realize also that the rockstar evolved the sandox alot more since IV. Just playing ELC the other day with no weapon wheel was just painful. But they didn't start using that till red dead"

So the bullsh*t is all you. I might as well be discussing with a dumber version of Helen Keller. And before you wonder or google who Helen Keller is, its not the girl who fled from the nazis. You dumbass

Vastly improved physics, driving and shootouts became so much more real, so much fun, had humor of their own. Crashing into cars with a big ass truck, heliblading people and sending them flying, easier to use cheats, and so much more.

And then GTA V had the opportunity to bring back all the GOOD STUFF from both games but failed miserably.

III is the best hands down. It has the most unrealistic, yet funniest driving physics out of all GTAs. It also has a nearly flawless balance between weapons (I'm really nitpicky when it's about balance in videogames). I said nearly because, in PC, the M16 basically beats the AK in every way and goes beyond, to the point of being a goddamn minigun. Though, in consoles it would be more balanced since you have to manually aim with, but the AK has auto aim like the rest of the weapons.

The story is great. Simple, yet immersive. And Claude is like the best protagonist. Takes sh*t from nobody and doesn't whine like a frigging baby, unlike all the protags from SA to V.

Portland is easly my favourite place in the entire franchise, let alone in III. Love the atmosphere.

And going itsallgoingmaaad & weaponsforall is one of my favourites past times.

I recently been playing III lately and that sh*t never got old. Been enjoying it like when I was 5. Now that I'm older, I'd like to learn some modding and I'd love to start with III, sadly, I cannot find any tutorials around (I can only find programming tutorials for VC, SA and IV).

But whatever. Maybe nostalgia is playing with me. Yes, VC and the rest of the GTAs are technically superior, but they will never be as enjoyable for me.  :catloaf:

I love that it bothers you so much that you have to actually question why people even like GTA IV. As a hardcore GTA IV fan it brings me great delight watching people like you scratch your head trying to figure out the big mystery when it's as simple to people having different preferences.

It just makes being a GTA IV fan even sweeter that some people are so thick to understand that very simple concept.:)

Sadly I barely have any memory of III, no nostalgia, only some missions, gameplay memories but nothing special. I'm sure it's a good game.

And I still stand by the fact that SA is best, Quality, Quantity, didn't try to please any certain group with certain gameplay changes like GTA V. f*ck the 'all over the place story' we got to meet Wu Zi Mu, race Claude, rob and bet in casinos,...

1) GTA III (my firts GTA Series game played, great atmosphere, nostalgy soundtrack, dodo )

2) GTA Vice CIty (great story, best soundtrack and 80x style, bikes and helicopters)

3) GTA V (no comments, but soundtrack is not good like VC)

4) GTA VCS (great game, great soundtrack, most advanced 80x style, like it because played it in PCSX2)

5) GTA San Andreas (wide openworld and many feautures, have bad and good songs (i dont like rap and other sh*t music, but rock, country, electro - so good), and i dont like gangsta-story and atmosphere)

6) GTA IV (worse game, very really and boring, its not good, bad car handlings, boring city, i like to move in city ONLY using taxi, and i tried to complete game 10 times, but always after 20th mission - i dont resume competition)

7) GTA LCS (great game, great ost, but very small feautures and other things, story much funny than gta4, i played it on PCSX2)

8) GTA 2 (game from my childhood, i dont remember it)

sorry for my bad English

ps: there are many schoolboys - how played firts in GTA IV on parent-buyed "ps360" who very like GTA4 also many rap, gangsters and sh*tty car-tuning fans who very like SA

1. GTA Vice City - soundtrack, rain effects on your windshield, pink script font, mansion with a helipad, a mall, the best characters and voice actors of any game yet, great story, and a great 80s feel.  No swimming on the beach though...

2. GTA San Andreas - Safehouses you can enter, planes, customizable appearance, RPG stats, driving and flight school, very good arena mini games, dating, triathlon, and lots of exploration options on an epic map with a lot of variety.  Captured the early 90s pretty well.

3. GTA 3 - I loved the overcast atmosphere.  Add swimming, a better soundtrack, and more types of vehicles and you have yourself a serious competitor for best GTA game.  Set the standard for GTA games.

4. GTA V - Brought some things back from San Andreas, but the main story was lacking.  Main characters seem over the hill and mostly just goof off.  Early protags had more desire.  Offline game is b*tch to the online mode.  The map is still good for exploring, albeit a little empty.  Gotta love yoga...and the epic 30 minute triathlon.

5. GTA IV - Niko is a good protagonist, the city was beautifully done, but the amount of stuff you can do is stripped down from San Andreas.

6. GTA Liberty City Stories - GTA 3 with motorcycles and some other cool additions, but still limited due to being a PSP port.

7. GTA IV TLATD - Good if you like motorcycles, working as a team, and staying in formation.  I didn't really care for it.

8. GTA IV BOGT - Focus on nightlife, but no dating or penthouses.  Okay...  At least you can do some stuff in the club, and it has an inferior base jumping system to SR2 & 3.

Haven't played any others enough to evaluate.

I love that it bothers you so much that you have to actually question why people even like GTA IV. As a hardcore GTA IV fan it brings me great delight watching people like you scratch your head trying to figure out the big mystery when it's as simple to people having different preferences.

It just makes being a GTA IV fan even sweeter that some people are so thick to understand that very simple concept. :)

I use to be on the same boat as him, now I don't really care anymore.

2. GTA SA (my second GTA, great story and map)
3. GTA 2 (I first played it only about 2 years ago, but it landed on 3rd place)

Pick your number one favourite, then your number two favourite, then three of your favourite GTA games.

V is number one because it improved on everything. After that I'd say 4 then SA.
