I was thinking about it a few minutes ago while eating a packet of ramen.

Sure, you could think about it from a simplistic point of view like "gangz r bad, they kill peeple!", but then again look at all the religious based wars and "crusades" in history.

They both follow a code of conduct of some type.

They both are always actively recruiting new members.

They both have specific things to wear and not to wear.

They both like making people uncomfortable.

But, I think I'm relating this more to tribalism or something, considering you could compare similarities between any groups of people.

...size?

Purpose as well, obviously, and tradition.

Are Republicans and Democrats closer to gangs or religious groups? :p

f*cking the daughters of religious group leaders is dangerous because they're usually hot blonde and innocent and you might get caughtt and end up seen like a James Dean rebel. f*cking the daughters of gangbangers is dangerous because you're probably going to end up without a brain case.

That's the main and only real difference.

One takes your money with physical threats,

The other takes your money with spiritual threats.

Otter said it pretty well.

Tradition and History are a huge role in religion. Gangs were only started to defend their own areas or businesses.

However, both are equally corrupt, and stupid.

They both like making people uncomfortable.

...no, not really.

And anyway, you can't say 'religions kills people' when all it is is people using it as an excuse to slaughter people they don't like.

Plus you could throw in a load of other differences and suddenly they're not all that similar - it's surprising what happens when you pick what to compare, isn't it?

Gangs can stab you or shoot you. Religious groups can... talk your ears off.

Religion doesn't cause war. Some religious people, on the other hand...

Religious groups use spiritual violence and threats, while gangs use physical violence and threats.

For example, the protection racket:

-church demands we give them ten percent of our earnings. And if we refuse, we will end up in eternal damnation!!! This protection racket is used my most religious groups to gain money.

Um... not sure what religion this is where the universal law is you give 10% of your earnings or go to Hell.... I'm Christian and I know for a fact that any Christian church saying that is hypocritical of their own teachings both through condemning someone and forcing them to give 10% with a threat. (Which by the way for all of you out there, not every Christian church is like that. If you think that, you're running off of stereotypes like the rest of society does. Be smarter than your average Joe.)

the tithe is a 'standard'. God allows you to work so you kick back 10% of your GROSS earnings. Then the Church can pay its debts, the minister and other expenses. Rarely does the tithe make it to 'Charity'. That's a separate box/collection.
How does your religious organization pay its bills? What do you think the 'pass the plate' is about. The really serious church's have the 'plate' as a sealed box on a long stick shoved under your nose by the Usher. I've even heard of church's locking the doors until the collections is made. (Pure hearsay.)
GOD will punish you if you don't ante up!

I agree it is a shakedown just like the protection racket run by gangs.
If a church is truly spiritual it doesn't need your money.
But the ministers/priests do need to eat, without working for it. I do remember that in the days of old each parishioner family had to feed the church leader in rotation of course. Something you don't need to do with a gang.

Way I see it, some religions get you to kill people in other religions. However, some gangs get you to kill people in other gangs.

What a difference.

But as I was saying, you're not condemned for not giving 10% of your earnings. it's not a law in the Bible, although God does encourage it. The church I go to (Like many others) basically say, "We are going to take tithe next song, if you feel like giving or you know God wants you to give, then go ahead, but if you need it to pay your bills, don't give. We would rather you pay your bills than give to us." Yes, my church does pass around a basket using Ushers, but they don't give you funny looks if you don't pay. They don't talk bad about you either. How do I know this? I'm a part time Usher at my church.

The reason I say that those who condemn you for not tithing are being hypocritical is because Christians, by their own book (Which is their guideline for life in general), aren't allowed to condemn someone for doing something wrong because the Christians themselves are just as bad. Being Christian is about being far from perfect and admitting it. (Well, that's one part of it)

Proverbs 3:9 Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce;
Malachi 3:8-10 Will man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. But you say, ‘How have we robbed you?’ In your tithes and contributions. You are cursed with a curse, for you are robbing me, the whole nation of you. Bring the full tithe into the storehouse
Leviticus 27:30 “Every tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the trees, is the Lord's; it is holy to the Lord.
Genesis 14:20 And blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand!” And Abram gave God a tenth of everything.

Christians often make judgements better left to God in the name of God.

This is a really stupid topic.

You can make those comparisons with almost anything.

Apples and Oranges for example.

Both are fruits
Both can be sweet or sour
Both are good for you
Both come in different sizes
Etc.

Gangs generally traffick and deal drugs, and kill people. Most religious groups don't do that, at least not anymore. Sure, there are a few batsh*t insane churches and people out there, but they don't represent the whole religion.

Also, your fedora is showing OP.

what's the difference?

dude this is obvious.

one is a tight knit cartel of thugs who harass, intimidate, bribe, extort, and bully anyone who is different from their own kind - especially former members who try to leave - and the other is a gang ;)

Gangbangers are usually intelligent and highly individualistic men who have decided to live on the edges of the society.

Religious loonies are moronic tits.
