Been following this since last night, flying / crashing is pretty much my worst fear yet I become obsessed with knowing what happens in situations like this. Absolutely terrifying, and devastating for all the families.

These plane related incidents usually don't end in good news. Sadly, they're probably all dead by now.

I can only imagine what kind of white supremacist jewish new-world-order-following aliens were hired by Obama to make this plane disappear

But yeah, planes usually don't fly off radar. This can't be good.

Yeah I heard about this last night before I went to sleep. The thought of it is just eerie and very scary and I feel horrible for the people on board and the families waiting in agony.. I hope the search and rescue teams will be able to locate them

On Topic: I read about it this morning and I hope everyone is all right. Although that is probably wishful thinking.  :(

I hope no one I know was on it. Last night I had a strange dream about having to warn a couple of friends about something. I was some kind of spirit following them around and right as I was about to warn them of whatever it was my dream had ended. Yes, I do believe that sometimes humans can see the future in dreams and such as a warning to something. It is like a challenge to identify it and give ample warning to whoever it may concern. Unfortunately I have no way of contacting said friends.

My thoughts going out to anyone who was or has a family member or loved one on the flight. It's absolutely f*cking terrifying to think about how something like this can happen to anybody on a flight.

The Russians shot it down.

Possibly a terrorist attack. Two passports from Austria and Italy were stolen and used on this plane, apparently.

I read the article earlier and this is pretty saddening news, I can only imagine how the families must feel :(
Hopefully they will be found sooner or later, and if they are, let's hope they didn't die or something else relatively bad.

They were at ~35,000 feet. Someone should have been able to tell if it was going down. Vietnamese, Malaysian, or Chinese radar should have seen it.

Why type sh*t like that here!?

It's very strange how communication was completely lost with the flight. RIP to all those that are likely to have died.

If they didn't go down, Then what the hell happened? An entire plane full of people just poofed off the Radar.

Could they have been Hijacked?

Or maybe it was a Sudden and extreme failure mid air.

Possibly any of those; again, two passports were allegedly stolen and used on this flight. Could be a coincidence or it could be terrorism.

This is giving me flashbacks of Air France Flight 447....they also went off radar. This was off the coast of Brazil and everyone lost communication with them. They started a search for the plane and eventually they found it crashed in the ocean.

The plane stalled after the auto pilot turned off due to bad sensor data from the pitot tubes, which helped to control flight speed.  After the plane stalled, the pilots couldn't recover. The pitots came back online at some point but the pilots were just too confused to figure out what to do and eventually the plane just hit the water. I believe that the most junior officer on board had the flight controls and was improperly recovering from the stall: instead of pulling the nose of the plane down to recover, he was pulling up. All this did was reduce speed even more.

Anyway, there are some excellent documentaries about Flight 447 if anyone is interested:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8dBa5_yGs64

-- I believe this is the latest one, after the black box data was recovered --

To get back on topic in relation to this flight though, well I fear that the worst has happened. If a plane has gone missing for this long and over the ocean....it usually doesn't end well.

I hope they can find it soon. If it did crash, I do hope that some people managed to hang on and survive.

The thing is, radio communications over the ocean are very spotty and planes are not always in range just because they are in the sky. I don't quite remember enough of the logistics to explain but once they get out of range of one ATC radar, they have to fly into the range of another one for accurate tracking. Or am I confusing this entirely with radio comms? I might just be. I do believe that the flight carrier is also able to track the plane on their own system, I remember that happened on board the Qantas A380 that had the engines fail. Qantas HQ was getting data from the plane the entire time.

But it's entirely possible to lose a plane over the ocean. It happened with Air France Flight 447 and they had to search for it.

Does an airplane explode when it hits the surface of an ocean ?  Nvm

I'm not by any means an expert but I don't think it "explodes" in the literal sense upon hitting the ocean. It does definitely break apart though and you'll have chunks of wreckage in the ocean, from the pressure of the impact alone. I believe that in the case of Flight 447, there was no explosion on impact. It was just a very high impact crash and that caused the plane to break apart upon hitting the ocean.

I think it's rare for a plane to hit the ocean while it's still in one piece. Usually if it comes to that, it's because there was some sort of engine failure on board/the plane is already in pieces due to an explosion in the air.

I think it's rare for a plane to hit the ocean while it's still in one piece. Usually if it comes to that, it's because there was some sort of engine failure on board/the plane is already in pieces due to an explosion in the air.

Air France 447 nose-dived into the Pacific a few years ago because the computer malfunctioned. Now, had it been on land, there would have been a tremendous, flaming crater left by the massive impact. But in the ocean, things are different.
Since Air France 447 stalled in mid-air and basically fell into the water, it broke entirely apart on impact. Some of the wreckage floated, but most sank to the bottom (which they found just last month, along with a few bodies). But in the opening search, oil was seen on the surface, which presumably means there were a few small fires. So depending on how much fuel and wreckage stays intact on the surface, there could be a small explosion.
However, given that water will put out an explosion if it's underwater, in most cases, the plane is simply shattered into pieces and sinks. You can look up AF447 if you want, and look at the recovery phase- most of it was scattered broken wreckage with most on the bottom of the ocean. That, of course, if it's a flat-out crash or nose-dive. If the plane gracefully landed on the ocean and got banged up then you might possibly have an explosion because it's still intact and the fuel/engines could be burning. But in the scenario you suggested, no, the plane would likely break apart and sink.

I think so, too.

I don't think it was a situation where the plane just hit the ocean due to a stall or whatever else like when I brought up the Air France flight. I think it was likely due to an explosion or some other issue like that while they were in the air.

Oil slicks in the ocean especially, I am guessing the plane's fuselage was compromised in some way and as they were going down, fuel was leaking/parts of the plane were separating.

I really hope they find it soon. And against all odds, I hope that there are some survivors.

EDIT: You basically said what I said, except you actually explained it better. It's been a long time since I followed Flight 447. I did say in my previous post that due to the pitots malfunctioning and not giving the flight computer the correct air speed data, the autopilot switched off and the pilots had to take manual control of the aircraft. The plane eventually stalled, the junior pilot was not properly recovering from the stall (he was pulling the nose up rather than down) and eventually near the end when the captain realized what the junior pilot was doing, they tried to recover properly, hence why it was pitching down on impact. They ran out of time.

I think it's obvious that the water would put out the fires. If it had been on land, there would have been no water to do that so the flames would have lasted for quite some time.

Anyway, thanks you actually explained it more in depth in your post! I hope they figure out what happened to this flight here soon.
