Alternative title: Valeria Lukyanova 'The human barbie' converts to Breatharianism; pledges to live off of only air and sunlight.

A Ukrainian model dubbed the “human Barbie” has revealed she is training herself to live off only light and air.

Valeria Lukyanova, 23, has admitted using plastic surgery and Photoshop to cultivate her doll-like appearance – but her tiny waist could also be a result of not eating for weeks.

"In recent weeks I have not been hungry at all; I'm hoping it's the final stage before I can subsist on air and light alone," she told theInternational Business Times.

Ms Lukyanova said she is converting to Breatharianism, a cult that believes food – and possibly water – is not necessary for human survival.

It has been criticised as pseudo-science – with some adherents reportedly dying of starvation.

With her cinched in waist, platinum blonde hair and vacant stare, Ms Lukyanova has attracted international criticism for her self-objectification and obsession with achieving an unrealistic concept of perfection.

In August she was the subject of Vice documentary Space Barbie, which explored her bizarre life and beliefs.

In a previous interview with The Daily Beast, she described herself as “a lecturer on the subject of out-of-body travel” and said that her appearance is a tool to “promote” her “spiritual ideas”.

Ms Lukyanova has a strong following across social media sites, with over 59,000 subscribers on YouTube, more than 9,500 followers on Twitter, and various Facebook pages dedicated to her.

I would like to think this is some sort of subversive performance art, but I doubt it. This species sure is strange.

ahaha I was reading about this yesterday. Apparently most breatharians break their own rule every now and then just so they don't die, though. And many have actually died anyway, but I think I still respect them more than vegans.

Apparently? Most? Many?

Anyone who has decided to not eat or drink ever again has died. There's no way around it.

@Myron: I mean some push their body to the limit for days or weeks until they realise they are dying, so they eat and drink something and then start over again :p

The ones that stay alive for longer than a week do, yes.

I wonder what kind of effect starving has on your IQ?

Alternately, how long before Blondie Bennett dies because she gets confused by a don't walk sign?

"I'm going to be offended for you"

Seriously, this bit I find annoying. Sure, the gist of the article is talking about someone who could be classified as retarded - we see this all the time - but I found this to be stupid. How in the hell are you criticising her specifically choosing to objectify herself? She wants to be objectified, how on earth are you finding this as part of the problem?

Also, I wonder what the mental state of those people who try to live off of air is like...it can't be anything close to stable.

Criticizing someone for trying to reach an unobtainable goal isn't really all that uncommon.

However, if she succeeds, it will mean she has found a solution for world hunger.

Jeez, I've never heard anything so ridiculous. 'Breatharianism'. Is this what we're calling Anorexia, now?

Anorexia is just a word mean fat people made up to try to keep the other teens under control and prevent them from potentially becoming skinny and pretty.

Breatharianism is a deeper, spiritual form of diet. It bases itself on the idea that one only needs the energy of a vital life force called Prana in Hinduism, or sometimes the energy of sunlight, while food and water are not necessary. Of course, science proves otherwise.

Congratulations to her.  :^:

More like she'll be living off live support or force fed. Dumb whore. Not eating isn't an art. It's stupidity and attention seeking.
