Hello everyone! Some time ago I was just digging in IV's files and I found something interesting and wanted to share it with you guys. As title says I found some audio files scripted for Niko claiming that he had possibility to buy drugs. To check that on yourself, you had to go to:

GTA IV folder - pc - audio - sfx - speech (I used program Spark to open it)

There are some audio packages for Niko, you have to click in "NIKO_NORMAL_2". There are some files named "DRUGS_BUY" being Niko comments obviously in buying drugs. I'm almost 100% sure that it was not included in any of missions. I also found somewhere in those files cough of Niko and never heard it before. What is that?

(At the end, I'm sorry for any eventual language errors, as english is not my native language)

If it's been discussed before I'm sorry, but I didn't found it anywhere and I've made an account just to post this thread.

you can also use the simple trainer in-game to have niko say the dialogue.

I think johnny has the "drugs_buy" sound clips as well.

Yep, it's in TLAD too. I guess they were gonna put it in TLAD but they cut it aswell. I'm not sure if Luis has lines for it, though.

I'm curious as to how it would work, the whole drug dealing gameplay and all.

Well I cannot see how it would fit Niko's personality and character if he could buy drugs, considering that he doesn't even drink or smoke...

Of course he drinks! You can go drinking on friend activities.

I noticed it too with the SNT dialogs.

Would be curious to see Niko high on crack.

Of course, but other than that he chooses not to drink. Remember on that mission from Vlad (can't remember the name) when Mickey (the barman at Comrades) asks him what will he have and he asks for a glass of water?

Anyway, I also remember him rejecting coke from Vlad on the Clean Getaway mission.

I think he refused drink only because to keep his mind clear during job, or just wanted to stay sober driving a car. Always when you try to get behind the weel while drunk, Niko comments this as wrong idea, which is on my opinion great example of his "good-type" of personality comparing to other protagonists. At least I don't remember Johnny or Luis hesitating drunk driving. And on friend activity with Jacob, when he asks Niko about how he deals with his problems he says something like: "I drink vodka". And of course in "One Last Thing" Niko orders vodka on the rocks. So he drinks, but I almost sure that he doesn't smoke.

Well I cannot see how it would fit Niko's personality and character if he could buy drugs, considering that he doesn't even drink or smoke...

That was most bothering aspect. As Niko is my favourite, I tried to understand if that is even possibility of Niko taking drugs. Considering his dialog during "Paper Trail" when Jacob lighted spliff. First he was unconfortable with this, however few seconds later when he inhaled secondary smoke unpurposely he was okay with this as this kinda calmed his nerves during mission. IF EVENTUALLY Niko would take any drugs it would be only weed in my opinion. I think that dialog was pretty clear and informed that players first were able to buy drugs, but not sure if to use this on character or just use this as selling object as it is in Chinatown Wars. So I don't know that it was cut becouse of avoiding some controversy or becouse Niko personality.

Also I found Niko lines when he's messing with a phone and most likely calls strangers - that was cut too?

I'm pretty sure that this would have simply been cut due to Niko's personality. I can't imagine him touching even weed really. That said however, R* were still getting over Hot Coffee so it could also be to avoid controversy.

I don't think that Hot Coffee has anything to do with it. The only reason why Rockstar got themselves into trouble is that Hot Coffee was supposed to be included in San Andreas, but it got cut and when Entertainment Software Rating Board rated the game, they didn't state that there was a sex minigame in the game. Of course, it couldn't have been accessed by a normal player like you or me, but all that had to be done was altering one small bit of the game script to enable the minigame.

Including a sexual minigame in a videogame of that nature requires an 'Adult Only' rating, but rather than removing the whole code altogether, they only had disabled it and a modder had managed to get it to work again. The game had the 'Mature' rating prior to the controversy, then it had the AO rating for a while and it finally got changed to the M rating again when the code was removed.

If there was a feature like smoking weed, or something similar to that and it's included in the preview of the ESRB rating, then it's perfectly fine. It influences the rating obviously, but it never would get them in unnecessary trouble.

In my opinion, the purchase of drugs doesn't fit to Niko's personality. Sure, he drinks when he goes to a bar with one of his friends or his cousin, but taking drugs is a completely different thing. It would fit better to Johnny, but then again, at the time of when The Lost and Damned took place, he refused to take drugs. So, that isn't really a surprise either, then.

As to why Rockstar didn't include purchasing drugs in GTA V amazes me. It would of been perfect as a new feature.

Like everyone is saying, I just can't see Niko doing drugs, which is probably why they removed it.
Of course Johnny did drugs, but he's supposedly straight-edge by the time of TLaD.
Luis would have been credible, making the pretty colors of the dance floor even prettier, surprised they didn't go with it there.

I've read one interview with Sam Houser when he spoke about that Hot Coffe controversy. He said that this time was especially hard for him when he had to go different places to explain some sides of this case (don't remember what exaclty, but check out interview named Criminal Mind: The Reclusive Genius Behind the Grand Theft Auto Franchise). He also states that because of this "dark times" GTA IV looks like it is now - gray, quite sad, cloudy - basing on his emotions that time. So I was thinking about this, and that actually makes sense to me - Rockstar was considering including drugs in IV, even recorded specific lines by Michael Hollick. But, however they've got some doubts at final stage about this and finally dropped this - that would be smart, safe move (funny enough, they left behind those lines anyway). Anyway, they waited some time till GTA V when they were quite stronger and belived that they won't take any damage for including taking drugs by character. And as I don't see myself smoking weed I don't see Niko as well. But if somehow that would happen I think Niko would be have monologue as Michael and Franklin when smoking, but I think something like: "Why I'm doing this?" or "So now I've become pothead...". Basically, I love the game the way it is, without drugs. I'm kinda think that if not "Hot Coffe Outrage" GTA IV would look quite different, and maybe that was good thing that did happend ;)

That's very interesting, any chance you could upload those sound files somewhere so we can hear 'em?

I wonder how the concept of IV was before the dark moments, IIRC the GTA IV project started in mid-2005.

I honestly still don't understand the controversy behind all that, it was a deleted feature that isn't normally accessed in the game, it was done with 3rd party programming and Rockstar didn't have anything to do with it, modding isn't officially supported by game developers, so why was Jack Thompson such a cut to start such controversy?
Rockstar shouldn't have even deleted it.

I'll try to upload this tommorow. By the way, do you recommend some serwers to make this bit easier? Because I don't know much about uploading but I'll try.

You know, everything what is hard subject can be also made into controversy. Rockstar had right to put this in game, but even then they decided to cut it. Unlucky there was some files. Rockstar won anyway, but in stupid, pointless struggle.

You can upload it on 2shared.com
And yep, you're right, the medias can easily make anything a controversy.

I can't say Niko chooses being sober like a lord but in general, Niko seems to not choose even drink alchocol. There's a few exceptions as far as I know. During One Last Thing, Niko orders "vodka on the rocks". During The Holland Play, Niko holds himself back from X's whisket offer but when he insists on, Playboy pours him some whiskey but he never drinks as far as I know. Of course, and except for his hangovers with his buddies. I mean it shows us that Niko has a drinking culture but generally chooses to be cold on alchocol or he just drinks along or with his close friends. But drugs, I'm 100% sure that Niko is cold about drugs. I think that's why they've cut it from the game because gameplay features should suit with protagonists' characteristics on the first hand.

Well that's true, but I was happy with some drug-dealing activity in IV than nothing at all. It was even more fun doing Little Jacob's drug sales and deliveries when bringing along Dwayne's boys for armed back-up. There would always be a shoot-out with rival gangs or cops whenever a deal went wrong.

I think the messing with phone dialogues would be used like when you call certain numbers in GTA V, however someone would answer and Niko would say one of these lines. Maybe even if he called contacts randomly.

I could see Niko smoking weed I mean its a dark storyline he might smoke it to get rid of all of the bad memories and feel happy. Plus because of the ending he might really need to get high.

What I do find weird is that there is a screen with Niko next to a lady in a bed and I don't think its one of the datable girls.

grand-theft-auto-iv-20080427024613387-23

Could it be that Niko could have called an escort service? Maybe it got cut during development

I actually discovered Little Jacob's drug-dealing jobs very late, it was on my second play through of IV. I did not bother to maximize the friendship levels with Niko's friends the first time around, I just wanted to complete the game. I wanted the fun side stuff put on a plate to me, and I then I realized I had to dig deeper and do certain things to get to them like up the friendship levels. That was one of the things that made me realize that IV was much better and more fun than I initially thought it was.

Little Jacob's drug missions were real fun side activities, I wished they were infinite like TBOGT's Drug Wars. However you can get around that by creating two save files and using one file without autosave to keep doing Little Jacob's drug missions.

I didn't really mind them not being infinite. Though I wish there were more like say 30 like most wanted and Stevie's vehicles.

Oh and if you've noticed just like Brucie's import/exports LJ's drug running gets randomised whenever you start a new save. Meaning while they're still the same missions the order is different.

I did mind it, because I found it real fun, just something I knew i could do at anytime. However I fixed that by just creating a separate file with no autosave. That way, I can just keep doing them over and over again.
