I work at a movie theater and today a movie about Jesus came out, called Son Of God. Everyone (save for a woman and her young son) who has purchased tickets to this film has been elderly and I'm perplexed as to why that is. Looking back, I also remember a good number of people who went to my church when I was a child were also elderly.

So I've been thinking all afternoon: why are most religious people older? Could it be that they're only attending church to make up for sh*t they did when they were younger because they know they'll be dead soon? If you're religious, please note that I'm not out to offend you.

Not necessarily 'making up' for anything, but I'm sure impending death is a factor. Also it's a generational thing, religion is not as central to every day life as it was back when these people were young. Old habits die hard and all that.

It's another generation.

People today care less about God than what they did before.

Another factor is death.

I don't really know about all the old people, but for some (German) old people, watching a jew (Jesus) getting killed in a movie or listening to the story (in a church) where Jesus is tortured and crucified, is like entertainment for them, and for some old people it's also porn.

It's a generational thing. Keep in mind, when these people were young MLK used religion as a means of uniting people and ending hate, whereas today religion is a tool for the bigoted and close-minded

Not necessarily. Most elders start believing in God for faith. Once you are nearing death, you want faith that another world exists after death. And you know how children are.. they still have more "sins" to commit.

Ending hate? Please. I hate that Commie bastard for making me have to share my water fountain with those... undesirables.

That's a pretty brave-ass thing to say, I am glad we have people like you to stand up against the fairytale believers.

I'd add that although it's Elderly people being more likely to be religious because when they were younger being religious was common, or Elderly people want the comfort near death, it's also that the younger people who are religious won't have as much time as retired people to go to church every week and religious places and the like. Which may be part of lesser belief leading to caring less about tradition or not caring about tradition at all, but that's just guessing.

I'm not sure if this is sarcasm or not. I'm going to assume so, because the alternative is that you're one of those people who considers atheists to be some heavily oppressed minority.

I work in a church, I'm a verger/sexton, which means I work mostly behind the scenes, but in short, I run the whole ordeal.

I often conversate with the people who come to church, who are as mentioned, all older than the concept of time.

To me it seems that they don't have a lot to do during the day, so they have time to pursue a life of religious fufillment.

And even at fiction it does poorly.

A being who creates the universe in 7 days with his bare hands?! Bitch please, that's shounen at its worst...

What about the famous Adam & Eve's love tale? Any pre-pubescent girl could have done a better job at storytelling with their yaoi Twilight fan-fics than those male sexists back then. You gotta be an asshole to think that women orginated from men's ribs.

Seriously, what a bunch of crap the Bible's story is. And don't even get me started on the apocalypse part...

Oh wow man that's edgy as f*ck, please make more satire about the literary quality of the bible.

If we're being honest, as a literary piece the old testament is pretty good, particularly in the time in which it was written, but I understand that you're trying to stomp around the fact that you're not a Christian, we get it.

Who cares if they "helped shape the western world"? That's besides the point.

What is the point, is that the story of God is a load of hairy balls.

And I rate it 0.07/10.

What is the point, is that the story of God is the biggest pile of steaming crap to exist. It's fiction.

So? What is this guy's point? To make some conceited 'witty' remark about the bible? Because it failed miserably. If a person doesn't believe in God, fine. Making out like the writings of bible is some gorilla written artifact with no use artistically, sociologically or historically is false. The majority of western art is built upon Christianity.

Yeah? Well f*ck then. Let's destroy all art from 300AD until 2014 because every single piece of art has roots in the writings of the bible. You are trying to swing your dick around saying 'LOOK AT ME I HATE RELIGION' and you're not doing it very well.

Shut your goddamn mouths everyone this is not about christianity and how little of the bible is even plausible, but rather the connection between religion and the elderly.

Because 60-80 years ago, religion was a really important thing (it's been an important thing since medieval ages).

My grandma forced me to go to church until I was 14, she thinks homosexuality is a disease and she thinks I'm going to hell because I have an earring.( But I still love her )

Religion can really change the way that people think, and there's nothing we can do about it.

As stated before its mostly Generational. Religion used to be a big deal back in our grandparents day in age. They prayed before they ate, Before they slept, when they woke up in the morning. Went to church every Wednesday and Sunday.

Maybe the elderly learned something from a lifetime of experience. The proximity to death is probably a factor.

But this "times were different" dogma is rubbish and was rubbish when the elderly were young and having this exact conversation.

Back when religion was big was back decades ago everybody had a religion now days people would rather sit in front of a TV on there ass then going to church at my church many people are elderly. Go to a church in about 20 years from now they will probably be close to empty unless some younger people find God
