Yeah if no one else bets then you have no cash to win so it gets canceled.

Play with your bets on your own character during a race and watch how the odds change. 10/1 odds is basically telling you for every 1$ you win 10$ So if you bet 100 you should win 1000$

The tricky part is that when you look at your odds, they are incorrect until  you've actually placed a bet on yourself. So if you see something like 3/5 odds, put 100$ on yourself and see if it changes. If anyone else plunked down a lot of cash it should change and it'll be in your favor.

You of course still need to win OR ensure the person you bet on wins.

Well, sometimes it's only two people, most of the time for me anyway, and it wont let you bet on your opponent, they realized that scam in the design at least.

Annoyingly if you have a positive w/l  hardly any randoms do.

You always have negative betting unless huge bets are placed on someone else.

Helps to change it to money line too.

Great observation. Betting is still something that completely throws me. I think I may have tried it two or three times, got confused and then stopped.

So how do I see my odds?

when your on the betting screen before the race its the number in the black box above your Win/Loss Ratio will show something like 5/7 or 1/2 unless you change it to a decimal

Nice.  Very helpful.

BUT--

Can you explain how I can lose money when I place 1st after betting on myself?

Cause I'm getting tired of that...

No I haven't figured that one out yet and I had it happen to me yesterday. I bet 100 and won and at the I was marked as losing 100.

I know sometimes I'll finish like 5th yet I still win the RP and Cash first place would have had, or some other position higher than me, and vice versa actually and I believe when that happens it's due to lag causing the game not to know who actually finished 1st and it awards the prizes almost arbitrarily. I suspect when you lose your bets even though you won it's likely just because of some kind of lag on the games part and not a result of betting wrong.
