This entire website is centered around the most controversial series of video games in history. You dismember and torture people, bury your face in strippers' breasts, shoot wounded cops who are being frantically dragged to cover by their partners, and GTA IV alone is loaded with enough F-bombs to make Joe Pesci blush.

I can understand deterring of racial slurs, but why are "sh*t" and "f*ck" censored? And, more specifically, why is the grawlix only censoring the vowel?

We're presumably adults, or we think we are. We've been exposed to an ungodly amount of profanity before. Why is just ONE vowel censored? When you see "f*ck you", you read it as "f*ck you", despite the grawlix substituting the u.

What's the site's explanation to "censoring" these words? It's just extraneous and useless.

This site's owner makes revenue from using Google AdSense (Advertisements), this money then pays for the server and other resources. Without it, you have no GTAForums.

An asterisk isn't going to stop people from knowing what you're actually saying.. so I don't see where this bothers you.

I'm glad someone finally brought this up, prior to this the rest of us were just sitting around confused as to why we couldn't use profanity without a filter but were too stupid to figure out how to address this.

I for one like the profanity censorship and if it makes the owners of this fine site revenue, I am even more for it. I had no idea that was the reason, so this was an enlightening read.

The whole "Google Adsense prohibits profanity" is my favourite myth on GTAForums.  It has never been accurate.  Reading the actual policy, it states:

Don't include any prohibited site content, including adult content, violence or excessive profanity, drugs (including alcohol and tobacco), or copyrighted material.

I don't think the amount of swearing on GTAForums could count as excessive profanity, I think Google is talking about some very serious cases, where the only words would basically be swear words, in which case, there would be no ads to yield.

However, despite this fallacy, I support the profanity censorship, because it's the best joke ever.

Gee, it's not like people haven't seen a website with profanity and Google ads.

Being serious though, I do agree with the sentiment that it's a tad silly that we can't swear outright on GTA forums, but it's not as bad as some other sites where they completely censor the entire word/phrase. At the very least, we still know what someone is saying when they do curse. In regards to the whole Google Ad-sense thing, it's better safe than sorry amirite.

Other sites: **** **** *** ***** **** shoobidy doo wop skibbidy be bop christopher reeves

GTA F: f*ck sh*t ass bitch c*nt shoobidy doo wop skibbidy be bop christopher reeves

see? still legible.

It is probably just not worth risking someone deeming it "excessive" and costing the site it's income just so one star can be removed from a profane word!

This has been brought up hundreds of f*cking times.

We are very f*cking lucky to be honest. We could by all rights enable one of those sh*t ass filters that replaces the swear content or removes it completely. That would be the whales tits.

It's been a ground rule for the longest time and it won't be changing anytime soon.

Considering the size of GTAForums, it would seem odd for Google to be willing to lose out on the revenue it provides.  And it seems Google aren't even sticking to their own rules; the rules also prohibit adult content, now I know they mean pornography, but I've seen porn sites with Google Ads.  I think it is just so Google can have reason to close an Adsense account.

But like I said...

I completely agree.  But I wanted to tell people that it wasn't necessary; because it just makes it a lot more funny.

How come ni**er is censored but other racial slurs aren't? I can go on about how those f*cking kikes are plotting world domination, those dirty spics are taking our jobs, and the dog killing chinks. No one minds. Maybe the staff should fix that?

Well racism against anyone but black people is good wholesome fun, especially if they're white people.

You could have a French guy on Seseme Street complaining about his stinky cheese, but not a black guy complaining about his overcooked fried chicken.

To segway, I didn't realize that this was under Google advertisement terms. I've seem innocent "f*cks" on other sites that run Google ads, so I suppose this question is now more directed towards Google than GTA Forums.

Oh please. The past is the past. We don't need to make up for it anymore.

This is why we're going to forever discriminate between races. People continue to point out "differences" between blacks and whites. Because of the past, blacks and various other minorities get special benefits, such as school scholarships pertaining to them and them only. But, the idea of a scholarship only for white people? Oh, that would cause an uproar. And America freaked out because we now have our very first black president. Why? I thought skin color didn't matter?

I don't get it. If we're supposed to be moving towards a completely equal society, then why are we continuing to make new differences between groups? The more we make a big deal about it, the less likely we are to finally achieve true equality.

So yeah, those other names should be censored as well. Hell, derogatory names towards white people should also be censored. Yeah, certain groups experienced more hardship than others in the past, but should that earn them special benefits today? If we're looking to be equal, then no.

Anyway, /rant.

Fun fact: Blacks weren't the only race to be enslaved. Case in point, people of Slavic decent.(Poles, Russians,..)

If you don't understand why 'we need to make up for it' then you are probably never going to understand why racial issues are still prevalent in the US and the west in general. It's not simply a matter of not making a big deal out of it and it will go away when the heart of the institutions of the US are still largely racist.

Trust me, I understand why racial issues are still prevalent, but that's not what I'm talking about. I'm not gonna go into it because, as Raavi pointed out, this isn't D&D.

The point I did make is that, if we're going to censor derogatory words towards blacks, then why not censor the others, too? Just because their history as a race was a bit difficult doesn't mean others' wasn't, and it doesn't mean that I'm not offended when I'm called cracker or wigger or whitey. I'm sure my Chinese friends don't appreciate being called chinks, either. So, either censor them all or none at all.

A bit difficult is an understatement and Cracker or Whitey isn't offensive to anyone, let's not be silly here. However I do agree that it's kind of odd that certain words like Kike aren't censored. I can understand why hink isn't though, and if cracker or whitey were offensive then I can understand that too. Chink and cracker are every day words with no racial connotations. Which is why I assume cock and dick aren't censored. f*ck only has one meaning however. Maybe this makes the filter a little insistent but hey, there shouldn't be a filter anyway, but hey, there is.

I'm sure a man of your intelligence can understand why a debate or discussion of racial issues can be relevant to a topic relating to censorship of words that includes racial slurs.

I referenced them because I do find them to be offensive. I'm not even kidding. I have plenty of black friends who jokingly make fun of how white I am and, surprisingly, they use those terms. I don't like how it sounds, so they stopped calling me it, but if I were to call them ni**ers or make fun of their skin color? It'd be a sh*t show. Not that I ever would. Point is, we're all offended by different things, so it's kind of silly to censor something so subjective.

Sure, you could argue the same for words like f*ck, and I'll never understand the censorship there, either, but that doesn't vary across forums like these other terms do.

The difference being that again, there's a few hundred years of subjugation to deal with when a white person starts calling a black person a ni**er. You can't really be offensive towards a largely oppressive culture, I don't know what to tell you, maybe you're just a little sensitive.

Well no, you couldn't argue the same for the word f*ck, that's my point. f*ck is quite a clear cut single meaning thing.

Oh please.  Black people should be happy we brought them civilisation.  Sure there was terrible costs along the way, but all progress has costs.  And let's not forget, that we used to treat one another equally terrible in Europe.  But at that point, that was apparently no longer cool.

And I think it is important to remember that women can be sexists and black people can be racists.  But all racial slurs are cool in my book, but political correctness is just a way for real racists to hide themselves behind vague terms.

When someone calls someone else a ni**er, that's not real racism.  But when someone introduces ID voter laws to prevent black people from voting, that's some good ol' racism.

In the olden days, to be a racist required work.  You had to actually hate someone.  Today you can just say a slur and be a racist immediately.  I am glad my great grandparents aren't around to see this day.

Also remember that this is a public website that can be visited by anyone regardless of age..whereas, the GTA games are all rated M for "Mature" which means that you must be at least 17 to purchase them. However, you DO NOT have to be a certain age to use the internet-ie. gtaforums.com.

And if we maintain this thought, we'll never reach equality. The past is over, and it's time to move on. Just about every race has faced some sort of oppression at some point in history, and I don't think it's anyone's responsibility to make up for it today.

I personally never understood why we censor foul language and slurs. Words are words.
