I'm very interested to know about what you'd choose to do if you could warp into the past and why you'd do it.

The possibilities are endless but i'll provide a few interesting choices here:

Cowboy in the wild west.

Samurai in feudal Japan

Royalty or court member in Medieval Europe

Legionnaire or politician in the Roman Empire

Bazaar merchant during the Ottoman Empire

Trans-atlantic tradesman during the discovery of the New World

Pirate anywhere

Famous adventurer

Et cetera.

Please feel free to post in this thread about what you'd like to be if you could warp yourself into any previous time period. Personally i'd  go for Cowboy or Bazaar merchant but it is a really difficult decision.

One of those UFO investigators out in the deserts of the US during the early 20th century. It's so fascinating, the idea of becoming fascinated, and eventually obsessed with something you don't know for sure exists (and without any of the internet or mass media to mock you for it.)

Well, I'd primarily go back to ~the 4th century to prevent the burning of the Library of Alexandria...

But, if I had to live in a time period? I'd love to live in the 18th century and travel on oceanography expeditions with James Cook. He knew how to prevent scurvy, and he circumnavigated the world. I mean, even the natives loved him.  I'm in.

This same Cook who named the Sandwich Islands. Do you think it's maybe true that the natives had Cook for dinner?

Aha, it's possible!

Well, maybe not all natives loved him, but for his time, I'd say he had a pretty good record.

1980s: became a heavy metal rockstar. Sex, drugs, destroying hotel rooms... or at least I'd go back then to a gig of Skid Row with the original lineup :(

If I could travel more than once, the possibilites would be endless, though. I would travel to these places where misterious things happened (Roswell, Tunguska, Ancient Alines lolololol etc.), visit the Area 51 when it was unknown and the Sr71's operated from there, when the Mayan civilization was discovered, to the Yukon during the Gold Rush, to the most tense years of the Cold War, I'd touch the monolith, I'd became the messiah of some sort of religion...

Oh, and I'd save GM from its crisis and the japanese car hegemony.

I've always thought I'd fit in during the 1800s, when manifest destiny hit the plains like the 7th Cavalry at Wounded Knee. I'd build an underground labyrinth house somewhere in the central high plains (looks like your average dugout on top.) My house would be a haven for all the prairie women who get abused by their drunk husbands. So I'd probably have small militia of tough women who'd die for me.

I'd work real hard to become a respected farmer AND rancher.

I'd learn Lakota, Dakota, Nakota, Ponca, Suhtai, Tsististas, etc., and help the people set up sovereign nations by translating during treaty negotiations.

I'd probably get assassinated by order of some U.S. president.

I'd warp ahead 1000 years.

But let's examine the question; do you suddenly have the skills to fit it? Most of us wouldn't even be able to communicate if we went back over 500 years, let alone become a samurai. :p or am I being a party pooper?

I dunno man, I watched the last samurai starring Tom Cruise and I think I've got it figured out.

1800s. I'd dick-punch all the assholes who wrote the long-winded novels I had to write massive essays about during high school.

Samurai in feudal Japan.

Back then you had to be Japanese to be a samurai, otherwise it wouldn't work out for you, unlike it did for Tom Cruise and Afro Samurai. You ain't going to be no Kenshin Himura.

Honestly, I would hate to live in the past. Golden ages my ass! You had a lot of incurable diseases back then, especially before the discovery of Penicillin. Nowadays there's AIDS, cancer and other kinds of illness, but it's still better than the past.

Therefore, the future would be a better option to take, even if the increasing heat and the lack of essential resources, like water, will be major issues for the humans.

1950's detective in LA.

Basically, I'd live the life of Cole Phelps.
Minus the downfall of his career and drowning, obviously.

There are historical records of black and white Samurai but they are rare. I more mean like, ok, you go back and are a Japanese samurai in the case of that specific example.

You are being a party pooper. If we are going to assume time travel we can also assume you speak the language in that place you go , are of that nationality, and have some form of skill to do whatever it is you want to do.

I'd want to go to the Gilded Age and try to strike it rich.

Either that, or as a Frenchman during the French Revolution/American during the American Revolution.

That's being even more of a party pooper. Half the fun would be in figuring out how the hell to live in a different era. Automatically acquiring the skills would ruin the whole idea of it, for me.

Sure, people would probably freak out when they meet your futuristic self, and maybe you'd share too many "innovative" ideas with them and f*ck up the entire timeline of the future, but that's the best part, isn't it?
