If anyone is interested, I've just tested out the loading times and here's what I got:

System used: PS3 Super Slim 12GB (80GB 5400rpm HDD)

XMB > Single Player > Online via pause menu = 3m 14s

XMB > Single Player > Online via wheel = 2m 43s

XMB > Online from load screen = 3m 23s

Switching session = 0m 51s

From story is faster.

When I first got gta I had the dashboard up and it took me like 10 mins to realise it won't load with it open.

I load straight to online because my ritual of packing/smoking a bowl takes just about that long.

If anyone else is further interested, I tested it again using the 12GB flash memory and the results were pretty much the same.

Conclusion: If you have a PS3, buy a 7200rpm drive for best performance.

I load online through story mode pause menu. More often than not starting onli
ine through the loading screen results in a ridiculous loading time and frequent time outs.

This.

I like loading up the game while offline, then signing in when the game is already launched.. Fastest way EVER.

wow rockstar your game just keeps failing. people cant even go straight to online. what a joke.

same here. story first then online. other wise it loads for half an hour and then times out.

I go half and half... I'm usually in the middle of sh*t before I play and I boot up, start my streaming pc and continue to get things done while it loads.. If I notice the "press X to go online" option I hit it... but it does usually take LONGER to load that way... and half the times it doesn't find a lobby for whatever reason and spits me back into Franklin's Aunt's house... (I deleted my save file so I could start over from scratch... so now I only have Franklin to play with).

I sure would like to know why R* thought we would need an option to quick pick multiplayer (from the wheel). The whole way you go from offline to online, and once online finding rooms, it's ridiculous. The whole thing is over-engineered and underperforms..

is that done to the second you're able to control the character at street level? because loading straight to online doesn't have the cloud loading that the character switch wheel does. Include that 10 seconds and it might be the same. Either way I still need time to smoka da ganja lol.

I started the timer the moment you see the R* logo at the beginning and stopped it the moment you can control your character.

Story first, then online. I like to start solo anyway to bank my money and f**k around. My PS3 craps out early on sometimes, and needs to warm up. Weird, I know.

Ya invite only is the way to go if your going to grind missions solo. Cuts the load time to 1/3 of what a player loaded session is.
