Speccy's Town is a total conversion for GTA Vice City. It will introduce a wide variety of modifications to the game, that range from replacing the existing vehicles and weapons, to establishing an entirely new setting, protagonist and story.

OVERVIEW

-Map-
    New island (currently planned to be roughly the size of x5 Starfish Island)
    New interiors and locations
    High quality models and textures for all map objects
    High quality/variety/density of vegetation
    Mip-mapped textures
    Prelit (left until final stage)


-Gameplay-
    New mission script (left until final stage)
    New player character model
    New vehicles (real manufacturers)
    New weapons
    New pedestrian and vehicle paths
    New health system CLEO (player takes damage/is able to heal)
    Retouched handling.cfg
    Custom timecycle
    Custom player animation
    Sound modifications for vehicles and weapons (no new radio stations)



I shall only release certain vehicles that i have converted, granted i have permission from the original authors.
Although most models are entirely made from scratch, I have made use of some models (and generic objects) from GTA: Project Liberty, GTA III HD, and 2-3 vegetation models from Vice Cry 1.7. I must credit the respective authors of the projects I have mentioned for their exceptional work, as well as Rockstar Games for making all this possible.

I appreciate all the feedback! Right now priority is getting the basics of the map done and in looking good in game. Having that said, i will begin to assemble a brief check-list to provide a broader outlook on how things will be coming together.

 

Nice. Will you add prelight?

 

I am considering all the possible ways to enhance the visuals, so prelighting would definitely be necessary. At this stage though, i have to work with what i have until i get a solid map together. As soon as thats the case, i will begin retouching all the models.

To be honest, i do not have experience with prelighting myself and am fairly limited with the tools i am using. I'm using sketchup and zmodeler 1&2, not 3ds Max. I still think it can be done, and once everything is in place, i'll look into it. I'm also hoping someone could help me out with it eventually.

 

Maybe you can include this to your map? :)

Thanks for sharing! You reminded me that i haven't mentioned anything about the size of the map.

The map in it's current form is quite small (although i'm adding things here and there) and will be merely half the size of either one of the two islands that form Vice City.

 

Situated on a small island in the middle of the ocean, what i had in mind for the style of Speccy's Town is the following:

- very few large/tall buildings forming the inner city

- large residential area

- basic facilities (a few shops, small police HQ and fire department building, one large hospital)
- a small industrial area with a port

 

So back on topic, i don't see where that could fit in terms of size and style. Depending on where the future will take all this, i might be able to expand the map by adding another separate island and merging the two together into one larger map. For now, i have the work cut out for me with the current size of the map.

If i can get any help at all, things would go a lot faster. Somebody to help me finish the roads alone would already take us halfway there. I'm focusing on quality over quantity for now.

Thanks! i have a lot of ideas for it, but as i've said, the map comes first! Expect some new WIP screens tonight.

UPDATE

- added 1 road

- added 2 walls/boundaries

- added 1 building

 

what IS being done

- modeling police HQ (only base)

 

what WILL be done

- adding new vegetation (small palm trees, 2 types of bush)

- adding police HQ (base and building)

- adding lamp posts and generic objects (perhaps too early?)

i'm giving it my best shot. I managed to put something together and to my surprise, it was actually quite challenging! and i don't mean writing the script, i'm talking about the mission itself. More info on that later and perhaps i'll record a youtube video of me passing it. But all that once i've figured out if i should even bother posting. VC might be dead, but i still love it.

I'd probably need a bp admiral Rollin through this hood. Great map and skills here, keep it up looks great.

First of all, thank you for all the feedback! I'm not sure where all this is going, and i don't know whether i will be putting any more time into it in the future. But this is what i did last - a silenced Colt 45, which would serve as the protagonist's primary weapon. I also worked on some cleos for a damage system. Here is how that would work:

 

  • The standard HUD is disabled (There are only visual indicators of the player's health)
  • health = 100 - no visual damage
  • health < 70 - the player model texture changes (injured skin)
  • health < 50 - the player begins to bleed
  • health < 25 - the player cannot run (only walks)
  • health regenerates slowly if the player: 1) does not move 2) does not take damage for 15 seconds

Although it has some flaws, that is all finished. Here are some screenshots of the damage skin and the colt 45 model

It's not backwards, his hand is just an open palm. It looks slightly retarded with the original player animation, which is what i had to go back to. Doesn't look too good when holding weapons either. It's these little things that require so much attention. I don't think i can complete a mod of scale such as i originally envisioned entirely on my own. I'll post any future updates if i do end up adding anything else, but don't expect much of it please.

WIP - Gold Pier

A very early version of the next little area i will be adding. There are two buildings, one will be a small Italian restaurant and the other a hotel with a small bar extension and terrace towards the ocean. I hope the Sketchup screenshots won't be too much of a boner-kill.

The surrounding area is also finished (not including props). Another building model is being textured.

The way things are looking in VC right now, i'm not very happy with the lamp posts, as well as the texture mapping on the arch.

At first I thought you were modeling on Max but now knowing that you're doing it on Sketchup, GJ because trying to do something that looks natural and realistic in Sketchup is like using Paint with a mouse to make a drawing of a real life picture (to me at least) nice textures too.
