To be honest, bubble gum is quite disgusting, seeing it all over every inch of the pavement.

But I do want to make a point with litter around cities and stuff. They do moan for littering yet there's never a bin around... Instead of moaning maybe they should place more bins around.

When I said I 'skipped' your post, I meant I scrolled past without seeing it. Perhaps I worded that wrong.. apologies. All we can really do here is just agree to disagree.

and what I meant was the whole dark blue background, like so: I guess my real question is, why do you guys litter?  Is it because you won't be seeing a trash can for awhile?

to remove that background, just highlight the text then click the eraser icon in the reply box:  e6035acf639221cbfdc9e84efb53de65.png

Gotcha.  Didn't even notice that when I was posting! Thanks. :^:

I understand these are separate things, and in no way am I trying to defend littering--I do try to avoid it when I can--but I'm not gonna shout-down people who do it without a second thought, because ultimately, it's fair to say that even properly disposing of waste poses environmental problems.

ShootPeopleNotDope: You're completely right. I was just pointing out that this topic really isn't about proper waste disposal.  I really wish we had better methods, but what can we do?  Companies are going organic, which is a huge step, and it's becoming pretty popular (at least here in the states), so there's hope in that department at least.

And yeah, they are starting to make fuel out of it, which is pretty cool, but littering unfortunately doesn't contribute to that, GunWrath, unless they have special organizations that specifically clean up litter and bring it to whatever fuel companies use it :p. Still, the emissions from it aren't great. Burning plastic isn't exactly the best option, considering the amount of benzene it releases. That's some potent stuff.

Edit: Question. Does anyone know why littering fines are so high?  I passed a few signs earlier today that said "No Littering - $300 Fine" and some that were even higher (and I had to laugh because of this topic), but I'm really curious.  Is it because of the cost of cleanup, because of appearance, or is it for some environmental reason?  I doubt it's the latter, so if anyone knows, I'd like to hear.

I assume the fines are so high to discourage people from littering, at least that would be the most logical explanation to me. But, it surprises me that it's really that high. I never saw a sign of that sort before where I live.

You can get up to 500$ for it here and also cops use it as a reason to pull you over and search your car or drunk test you.

Good point. This will help liberate the feeling of guilt next time I take a sh*te in somebodys plant-pot when there's no toilets around.

Yeah, but why are the fines SO high? And why have them at all?  I guess it's to prevent a huge pile of trash from building up.

I feel like people would litter the same amount that they do now whether there were fines or not. Generally, people don't like walking through a messy area.

Not sure, maybe it's due to location? I've noticed like around my neighborhood that the fine signs are a higher amount while in more industrial areas and downtown the fines are lower. Or possible due to certain areas not able to have such frequent work done by city workers, etc.

Not only are they fines but punishable up to jail time as well.

I actually try not to. I'll stuff my bag or my pockets with papers and things like that if I can. Or say if I'm walking home, I take out a piece of gum and want to throw the wrapper on the ground, I'll tell myself, "No! I'm almost home. I can throw it away when I'm there." As for the gum itself, if there is not garbage can nearby, I spit it out in places where people are not likely to step on it.

And please, hold off on the rape comments. That's just offensive.

The context I put it in it should not be , first of all it's a joke, and yes there are bad jokes, but it's not picking on victims of rape or further victimising them, it's playing on the societal norm of hating on rapists, so in that sense it shouldn't really be offensive at all, if you can explain why it still is offensive, please do so, but I feel i'm with the majority on my reasoning. Sorry to go off topic about this, but just because the word 'rape' is used, it doesn't automatically make it offensive or wrong.

I guess my real question is, why do you guys litter?  Is it because you won't be seeing a trash can for awhile?  Do you just not want to hold onto your trash anymore?

The only time I do it is on long road trips when i'm tight on time, if I have mcdonald's in the car, I throw out the paper and leftovers because it makes my car smell, I don't feel good doing it, but I don't feel bad either. I don't really care about the two bags a year and dead chips I throw out.
Other than that I don't litter.
