I think littering to some of the people in this thread is equivalent to killing a human.

No, it is just stupid, lazy, and careless. I would imagine you drive one of those cars with the passenger seat and leg area filled with fast food containers.

Why would you image that? everyone has their side to the story regardless :^:

Yes, and if you do litter, your side should be "I am a careless, lazy slob and proud of it" rather than any other form of attempted justification.

Littering is particularity disgusting because it serves no purpose, in my view. Throwing away crap properly doesn't make one's life any more difficult so I've never been able to comprehend why people don't. As others have said, it's sheer laziness and apathy.

:monocle: Then my question is, who the bloody hell is saying what you're supposedly "listening" to in this thread?

Just scroll back a bit.

Why should I be ashamed? Yes, I occasionally litter. At least I'm not out there raping and killing people.

Because you are a careless, lazy person. No offense. But that is what littering is.

It's lovely making generalizations about people, isn't it.

He's got a point, though. Give me one example of littering that isn't just sheer laziness.

We can pretend this is not as bad as littering, I guess:

landfill%20trucks%20dumping.jpg

"Really now? You are going to say that is the same as the OP and someone/anyone throwing a fast food wrapper out of their car, thus making their personal landscape disrupted by a piece of trash that they were to lazy and uncaring to properly dispose of.

Or are you just wanting to come across as all deep and caring?"

So, the above doesn't seem even a tad bit condescending to you?

Yes it does, and I apologize for that.  I blame El_Diablo :colgate:  for for my attitude since he was the first one to come in and misconstrue the initial discussion.  Although, you did continue on that different path.

I don't think anything I or El_Diablo said is irrelevant to this thread, he was simply making the point that an excess of waste is nothing more than a consequence of industry, and I elaborated on those points.

Trip, you recall in PA, where they lit a local dump on fire to eliminate most the trash and an old underground coal mine caught fire and ended up the entire town burned down? Saw that on some show I watched the other night. I believe this was in the 70's or early 80's. The fire is still there to this day, you can see smoke coming up in the same areas. Crazy sh*t.

I remember seeing a news report on this 2-3 years back. It's legitimately like something out of a dystopian sci-fi novel. If that's what happens to trash that is 'properly disposed of', littering is inconsequential by comparison.

Somewhat relevant Louis C.K. bit:

That's Centralia, no?

I don't think you can really claim properly disposed of household rubbish dumped in properly audited and licensed sites is anything even close to "littering".

It baffles me that people would even want to litter the place in which they live, be it surrounding their own home or in the city/town area.

There is obviously the huge environmental side of the argument, but that's better spoken about by someone who knows more about it than me.

I simply hate littering and litterers because it's lazy, wasteful and dirty. There's no other excuses for it other than that, because there are public bins literally everywhere now if you're outside. An example that most pisses me off is parents who let their children just throw things on the floor, or people who litter when there is a public bin just a few yards away.

No I don´t litter. Ridiculous, quite the contrary I sometimes pick up others trash and take it to bin.

This is what You may hear if You litter near me:

"This is a public living room, not your living room."

"Did Your momma not teach You anything?"

"Are You 5?"

Once I asked "Are You blind or just stupid?" I have even gone as far as making people to pick up their litters. "You will take that in the bin."

It´s enjoyable to embarrass people who act like children, especially if there´s a crowd of people hearing.

It makes my heart beat in excitement.

My car is clean, thank you very much. So is my house. The only thing messy is the fact that I have a few Life Saver wrappers in my car door's pocket next to the armrest.

Oh and theadmiral, if you read my posts in my thread you'd know I don't litter much and agree that it is lazy. Although I think it is lazy, I am not going to bitch endlessly about it.

How is it a generalization to say that people who litter are careless and lazy? It is a factual statement.

It isn't a generalization. However it is a generalization to assume that those who litter are always lazy and careless.

I care a lot about the environment but I'm too lazy to not litter.

So only the too lazy part is true in my opinion.

Though there is a possibility that you actually hate the world and litter on purpose to make a statement, in which case you're not lazy either.

Those who frequently engage in careless and lazy behavior are careless and lazy. Deal with it. You throw your trash around in public places for someone else to clean up, you deserve the label.

Quite a bold statement. So I'm relatively skinny. If I decide to let a small wrapper slip out of my hand, I am automatically fat?

Trash through my window? You need to grow up.

What's immature about me saying that I toss trash out of a window.. does one napkin or paper cup honestly bother you that much? Then stop what you're doing and do something about it. Perhaps join your city's council, become a City Worker and clean the trash, I don't know, something productive towards the removal of litter.

"Panz, I'll hire you to follow me around and pick up my trash if that helps your wounds any?" is the immaturity I was referencing. And no, I didn't suggest that I would ever throw trash in through your window.  I'm simply making an analogy.  Someone throwing trash into your home is analogous to what humans do to organisms every single day.  Get it?

I study environmental science and biology, and I will be researching the effect of ocean acidification, caused by human pollution , on the morphologies of marine organisms this summer in Nicaragua.  I think that's doing a lot.  I'm not trying to sound arrogant, but you really don't need to be a prick with statements like that. You don't know me.

Yeah, I cringe when I see someone litter.  It's not the equivalent of killing a human to me, no.  I just find it a bit irritating that a lot of you won't accept that it's a lazy, careless, and pointless habit and instead post comments that you find to be witty and clever rather than post ones that contribute a valid and thoughtful opinion on the matter.

Well plastic materials are the ones that actually harm the environment because they are non-biodegradable. This is why some people here in India recommend us to stop using plastic bags or anything made out of plastic. Which is tough because most of the things are made of plastic.

Either way, I'll continue to litter.. it's not like I'm releasing tons of garbage out. the masses of my littering in the course of my litter career can probably filly a small grocery bag..

Ed:

I totally skipped your last post, Panz. That sounded really poetic and all but it doesn't put any restoration to my litter beliefs and opinions. We're talking napkins, straw wrappers and paper products here. I'm not dumping coca-cola boxes, glass or metals out the window of my truck or pocket during riding. What amazes me I know and I'm pretty damned sure there are some people here who say littering is bad is pathetic, yet some of them are smokers, so don't sit there and tell me they don't flick some cigarette butts on the ground every now and then. Don't lie about it either.. I used to be a smoker.

Anyways, to you I may sound immature and lazy or f*cking disgusting, but I'll be long dead before this Earth is ruined due to human pollution and pollution in itself, fact. Far more harmful and dangerous things out there that I have to deal with on a daily basis than a plastic McDonald's cup lid rolling down the side of the road. Quite frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn. Enjoy your travels to ocean research and all, hope you find the cure to littering and pollution! I really do..

Oh, and when you copy and paste and have that unwanted dark background behind the text, just highlight all of it and then hit that Eraser icon in the reply box, it'll remove all that. ;) The More You Know!

I'm from Bangladesh, I'd be sent to prison if I didn't litter. Whenever I throw out paper or whatever out of the window there's always someone picking it up and these people are paid to pick up trash. So if you think about it I'm helping create job opportunities hence, improving the economy of my country.

The lengths some are going to in an attempt to justify littering (of all things). This forum can sure bring out the best of 'em.

Reminds me of those slapdash individuals who leave dog sh*t all over the place; or those who can't even be arsed to say "thanks" when you hold a door open for them.

Pick up your trash, and take it to a f*cking bin you idle prick.

I am surprised to find people with such incredibly strong feelings on the subject. Anybody would think this was a topic asking about thoughts on rapists.

Haha valid points are being made though.
