'GTA Clone' has the be the most ignorant terminology ever, and it makes me ashamed to be a GTA fan at times.

Open world crime games are my favorite type of games to play as they offer variety and replay value, I am a fan of all the other open world crime game series and I hate how underrated the non GTA ones are, not one game critics could talk about Saints Row 2 without mentioning GTA IV (and in my opinon, Saints Row 2 > GTA IV). It also appears that the term 'GTA Clone' is responsible for the downfall of the Saints Row series, they turned a gang themed game into a superhero game because people kept on comparing the series to GTA.

I also really feel sorry for the developers of Watch Dogs, the game is going to be underrated as it is, the delay is only going to make things a lot worse.

So, does anyone hate the term 'GTA Clone'?

I do.

Rockstar thinks that they own the Open-world genre, and if there's a game similar to GTA, it'll automatically be called a GTA clone.

I hate it.

Rockstar might be the best at creating cities and stuff like that, but there are open-world games with better gameplay that also feel more alive.

Like Sleeping Dogs, ain't nothin' special, but it gets the job done. ;)

I love that Sleeping Dogs feels so alive, and the gameplay is amazing.. But driving is kinda "arcadey".

I remember playing saint's row and thinking this is sort of like gta with things I wish gta had. I wouldn't mind gta being a bit of a "saint's row 1 or 2 clone."

3 and 4 were awful though.

Yeah because it's totally Rockstar's fault that the media, whether it be IGN, Gamestop or any other retailer refer to these games as GTA Clones, isn't it. I would bet my let but that Rockstar have never issued any statement referring to a competing title as a 'GTA Clone' and if you can prove to me that they have I will retract this entire statement.

I don't hate the term 'GTA Clone'. I mean obviously there have been open world games prior to the release if the first Grand Theft Auto but there's no doubt that DMA Design popularised the crime-sandbox genre with GTA 3 after the cult underground following of the previous 4 titles. The Driver series after it became popular was effectively called a GTA Clone from the get-go, whether they were attempting to emulate a different game or creating a medium from an original idea.

I Don't agree with what you said about Watch Dogs.

Although i love GTA V, WD is going to be better.

Trust me, it will not be underrated.

I don't know about you guys but if the name GTA in the first place was never invented by the developers, do you think it would be named Race N Chase clone? Wouldn't that be an awkward iteration?

Personally I have no hate on the term despite GTA not been the first open-world game but it's crime related story does give it the revolution of being the most outstanding game title.

I like it and at the same time i dont,GTA was the first openworld game but with technology,GTA(3)took the foundations laid by GTA 1 and 2 and Change the Genre forever, without GTA the Genre wont be popular or what it is today.I play saints row 2 and it was a great game but when i download Gta San Andreas from the XBLM i immediately saw how saints row copied San Andreas.Plus Saints row was a rushed franchise with 4 game going from gang to aliens and it started on current gen consoles while GTA is 16 year with 15 games spanning 3 Generations. So the term GTA Clone is great because GTA has a cultural impact on the genre, plus it the most successful and best selling openworld franchise of all time(5th best selling).no other openworld franchise is not even on the top ten best selling franchise.Doom is not even in the top ten like GTA,and it not the first FPS but it change the genre, there is a term called "Doom Clone" but it not define or as a wikipedia page,or popular like the term "GTA Clone"

No i Love the Term

Agreed, GTA innovated this 3rd person view so it's well-used imho.

I don't think it's used anymore. People just call it "open world" or "sandbox".

It was kinda like the first FPS's being called Doom clones.

Innovated as in using the 3rd person view? That honor would actually go to Duke Nukem 3D before it went to gta and there's possibly some other games that aren't coming to mind that also predate gta's success with 3rd person views.

And I wouldn't say well used. The cameras have aways been a bit clumsy and awkward. Bad angles and the annoying tendency for the camera view to snap back after being adjusted was always one of the most annoying features of gta3+

Maybe also like voxel games being called minecraft clones? Though this seems a bit steep, since voxel is pretty much another genre but GTA clone is just open-world third-person crime game. On that note, I find it's more descriptive to call a game a gta clone than throwing in genre names. Hm.

Not trying to be a fanboy or anything but that title "GTA Clone" was well deserved for Saints Row. They really need to start being unique with their ideas.

Saints Row = GTA Clone

Watch Dogs = Epic Sandbox game

I think "GTA Clone" is funny :)

I might be wrong, but wasn't the game MAFIA first released before any other 3D open world game?

I like GTA and I like also Saints Row.

Each game is its own genre and represents an enrichment for us.

Sure maybe we dislike in some games few things...but a perfect game wich gonna be loved by everyone never gonna exist ;)

What is too bad is how to fly helicopters or planes in GTA. In Just Cause 2, it is damn easy to handle with the helicopters (shoot and fly). And in Saints Row the third it is damn easy to handle the Jets (shoot and fly).

In GTA V I seriously missed the Jumpjet from San Andreas.

And I really hope for a next GTA 6 to see all GTA Cities on one Map, and also everything develerated to have a more realistic effect. Also when you land from high altitude with a helicopter that then more you approach to the ground that more it look big to have a real wow sensation and to feel like a little human :D

Well curently I wait for GTA 5 for PC... it is too bad that Rockstar Games is not even telling to us fans if it gonna be released.

I am also curious about a Saints Row 5... the 4 was more a DLC inro my eyes.

Maybe Saints Row 5 gonna be made by more than only one city, cause the makers are also aware that many wants an akin feeling like in GTA San Andreas again.

By the way, I have a little question:

In GTA 5 you have a mission where you must save "your" daughter from a Yacht, where they wanna make a porn.

Is it somehow possible to get this Yacht? cause all other ships are dwarfs and it would be amazing to own a big ship :)

Personally, I don't care if something is a rip off as long as it's a good rip off.

No,GTA 3 was the first 3D Openworld Game than revolutionised and popularise the Openworld Genre and was released in 2001 the First Mafia Game was Released in 2002 the same time period as Vice City.Just like i said before GTA was not the first Openworld game nor the Last but for a 16years old Franchise spanning 3 Generations it evolved,Revolutionised and made a Genre so POPULAR.just like what DOOM did to the FPS Genre regardless of it not being the first FPS game.the same for Resident Evil,MGS to their respective Genre.

As soon as I read "Saint's Row 2>GTA IV" I stopped reading.

Watch Dogs = Epic Sandbox game

This. Although Watch Dogs seems pretty boring, it's simply Assassins Creed in modern day.

I've never really liked the term either. It's rather condescending to describe the efforts of other developers and really most open world games are different to what GTA tries to do so I don't see why they're "clones".

Only games that're legit GTA clones to me are games like Gangstar, which're basically just like a cheap GTA ripoff with nothing new to the table.

Yes, but Gangstar is a mobile series, so you can't except something amazing and revolutionary.
