I am looking at purchasing a laptop to replace my tablet for xmas, but I also want mid range gaming with a budget around $500-800.

No fancy features necessary.

I'd probably go for a Lenovo Z710 in the ~$800 range, though you might have to wait until the Christmas sales to get on that cheap. 1080p screen, Quad-core i7, 8GB RAM and a GT745 is about the best I think you'll be able to do for that price.

Take a look at the Lenovo Y Series, aswell. They have good offers there.

Lenovo Y510P for example (i7, 8GB, GT755M), sadly only a 15,6 inch display and a 1366x768 resolution, but that might be good aswell, since it offers good gaming performance and you can play 2013 games on medium - high settings.

Except for display/resolution, which causes it to have better performance than the Z710, there are no negative points.

Well and it's smaller than the 710, too. If you don't want to carry a 17.3 inch Laptop everywhere.

I you want a SMALL powerful laptop, try to find a Sager NP6110(Clevo W110er) It is like a year old now but still is powerfull.  You would be hardpressed to find a more powerful 11.6 Inch laptop!! Has 1366X768 resolution, GT650M, I7 or I5, 8gb or 16gb, lots of hard drive options.  500gb/750gb ssd/hybrid. Whatever... when they were new you could order with whatever you wanted. Check out small laptop builders like Sager, and you can get something tailored to your needs for a decent price. Dont get a Dell/Alienware.

I can play all the latest games on high even ultra. Resolution will not be as high as a bigger screen, but who cares it is a small reliable gaming platform.

They seem to start around the $1,000 mark but look to be a good spec for the size. Again perhaps another one for the post-Christmas firesale.

I got a HP Pavilion 17 Notebook PC from Walmart. It has 8 GB RAM and I think it is750 GB hard drive. (not sure on the hard drive's capacity) It only costs about $600.

This might be a little late for xmas.

Most of those lack a dedicated GPU and therefore suck somewhat for gaming,
