Yeh marketing, yeh and all. But how on earth did they burn through 265 million dollars. Its a good game and all but nowhere near 265 million dollars good.

Heres an example Metro 2033 a fine fine game cost 100 times less to make.

I just don't get it. I mean there wasn't even any famous voice actors to cream.

Probably most of it was probably spent towards people going to LA and researching landmarks and buildings, or on realistic steak.

Metro 2033... You are wrong, it was awful!

However, the amount of people that worked on gta v, I'd imagine wages played a big part in it!

Advertising.

Almost every single ad at bus stops and train stations I've seen pre-GTA V were advertising GTA.

I'm sure 50% to 75% went on advertising.

Advertising and Executive salaries...

I bet the game only cost a couple million in employee wages and development costs.

Wages, advertising IRL, voice acting, research (LA), motion capturing (peds, chars and so on), license for the music, all the fake advertising and made up products in the game, programming, the ingame internet with all the fake sites with text, pictures, and it has to be funny. the series and ads on ingame tv just produced for the game (here comes the mocap into play again), translation to different languages, at least all the text/subtitles, servers... and all that.

look at the credits, its about 30minutes long and all the people who have worked on this title. everyone wants to get paid.

I somewhere red that every peds face is made from a real person. that's waht they do since max payne. real faces on the AI people and stuff.

Its alot to pay but I don't how much every segment costs.^^ 265million is very very much...

Part of that 265 million was to research strippers while enjoying realistic steak and everybody knows how much that costs.  ;)

Well that is more than twice the average cost to make a AAA video game...

Was the money well spent? I think they could have focused more on design and less on presentation, which is where most of it went...

Art, research, sound effects, voices, programming, design, music license, their own soundtrack, advertising, and probably more. There's a lot to do to make a game like GTA and whether you like it or not, GTA V is mostly a wonderful looking game with plenty of details and that costs money.

An average software engineer in silicon valley earns like $100,000+ a year, sometimes way more. If you have 150 engineers, designers, artists...etc working on this project for 3 years, you've already spent $45 million on the game. This is only salaries and excludes other costs like healthcare and taxes.

Then you use artists for voices and have to pay license fees for the music you use. Then of course there is marketing and everything that goes with it. I am not even talking about all the tools they had to purchase for the game.

Check out the "credits" when you finish the game and imagine that each of the people mentioned there have probably cost the company more than $300,000 during the last 3 years of production.

Then you have the rent of the buildings used, electricity bills and other costs.

There are two things:
- This shows efforts of creative team at Rockstar to aim for the best quality entertainment.
OR
- Like Every studio wants to ultimately please their fans, most of it forms part of marketing and additions to current fan base.

The results in both cases are actually quite shocking as fans have already reviewed the game.

$1,000,000 on the game, the rest on a mountain of Bolivian marching powder.

Most of the "songs" in the game's soundtrack should have been paid to R* by the people who made them.

I bet a good portion of that cash went to the epic amounts of whiskey and cocaine they did before writing the story.

Supposedly, $100 million was spent on the production; $165 on the marketing.

If they spent more on marketing than production thats sad. GTA sells itself. I love the game but thats not how gta should be. Viral marketing would have been fine.

$115 million was spent on the actual development and Take-Two spent another $150 million on marketing, according to Variety.
