Like, I keep finding myself going back and playing the 3D era and GTA IV. And I played them a lot when I first got them before V was out too. But what does V not have that those did that kept me coming back?

A centered camera, and you could return to it and find stuff to discover.

GTA San Andreas - better setting, better cheats, better music, more replay-ability, it's sh*t graphics allow certain things to suit the game (killing people with dildos, jetpack, clown mode etc - its hard to imagine that kind of stuff in the HD era), better/funnier characters, much longer story, not mention it's nostalgic quality and the fact that you enjoyed almost every mission, and they were all different. IMO the best GTA there will ever be.

GTA IV - havent played since V (because I dont have it on PS3) , but it had a better story, crappier missions, sh*ttier music IMO.

Have yet to buy the other GTAs. Played Vice City years ago but never completed it

V is a great game, but way overrated and over hyped if you ask me

Nostalgia.  That's about it.

Every time I go back to play 3D Era it is an absolute chore.

A decent soundtrack. @TPenterprise, GTA V isn't overrated, it's rating is just fine. It is over-hyped though like you said.

Well maybe not over-rated, but what I meant is that it's no where near as good as it was made out to be

Vigalante missions.  They added a LOT of life to game after I finished the story.  Taking over territories in SA was also fun.

Ambition. They had something to prove then. Now, their ego has gotten the best of them. They have nothing to prove anymore. We'll have to wait until a great sandbox game comes along for them to get serious again.

I'll just get it over with and list everything I can think of that isn't in GTA V but was in other games.

Dirt and Bloodring Stadium Events
Graffiti Tagging
Vehicle missions like Vigilante, Paramedic and Firefighter Missions
Gang/Drug Wars
Fight Club
Drivable Trains
Jetpacks
Passtime activities like Bowling, Dating, Arcade Games e.g
Weapons like Flamethrowers, Katanas e.g
Gambling

Fast Food Interiors

Some minor stuff overall, though I'd wished for a bit more. However, it does have stuff that wasn't in GTA IV like...

Flyable Planes and Rhino Tanks (not counting the APC from TBOGT)
Rural Areas
Car Customisation
Miniguns
Purchasable Property (but no safehouses)
Rampages
Garages for Vehicle Storage
Tattoos and Hairstyles
Bicycles

Maybe it could have used more, but I'm glad they brought some of this back.

I had vice city when i was a kid and loved it.

If i had GTA V when i was a kid i would of never left my room and would of been 10 times more addicted.

Games move on. i can pretend the game was super awesome and nostalgia says it was. but now i could never go back to those games.

Agree with Gst0395. Things for me were:

Vigilante Missions/Most Wanted

Paramedic/Firefighter missions

Gang/Drug wars

Fight club

A big city (I'm not sure what it is but LS seems very small compared to Liberty City. That might just be me though)

I beg to differ, I found that A LOT of missions in SA were frustrating as f*ck "all you had to do was follow the damn train CJ" specially the second half of the game where CJ suddenly became James Bond. By that half I found my self screaming at the characters for making me do so much stupid sh*t and found myself screaming at the gameplay for having so many frustrating and needlessly complicated missions (i.e all of zeros missions) by the end I wondered how in the holy mother of ass did a 2-bit hood like CJ ended up not only working for the Feds, a drunken rapper, a washed up cameo from vice city, the triads. The mafia, multiple businesses he bought, a hippie conspiracy theorist and also ended up stealing a 60 million dollar jetpack and aliens goo without the military finding out.

It might seem I hate SA But I am just merely pointing out how I found CJs transition from a 2-big gangster to a 3-bit one a bit jarring. And I also made that rant to vent some of the most frustrating but fun hours of my life,

"COUSIN, LETS GO BOWLING!"

Seriously though, drivable trains. They were so nearly there too.

While there are things 'missing' I still think GTA:V is the one I'll be playing for a long time.

GTA:III - random exploration/havoc

Vice City - after I'd finished, I'd take a helicopter to go around my businesses and collect cash then cause random havoc / do race events (I do miss those).

San Andreas - random exploration / havoc after completion

GTA:IV - multiplayer deathmatches and races after completion

GTA:V - random exploration havoc and GTAO which has more than just deathmatches and races.

Each progression, after SP completion , the game has been more entertaining for me.

SP was a bit short in GTA:V, which means it's less likely in ten years time I'll want to replay it, but for the next year or three GTAO will keep me amused.

I think it might be an illusion because IV had the parts of the city phsically divided by water and bridges whereas V had the entire city slumped together + the small suburbs/mounts on the top that look like they were part of Blane County.

OP: I just want jetpack (SA), IV-styled vigilante missions, maybe a zombie mode (not in a GTA game before, but it was in RDR), actually fun weapons (SA/VC), purchaseable, enterable properties (VC) and safehouses (SA), more costumization options (SA), modifications to actually have an effect on the world, and the land-water car that was in SA and I will stamp that f*cking box with a "greatest game of all time" seal.

I still get more mileage out of SA and IV than I do V. It's hard to explain; I just like them more. V looks better, sure, but I just didn't get sucked into it the way I had hoped. I really wanted to be singing its praises for the next few years, but eh. I guess I'll put it on the shelf next to Skyrim, another game that just didn't do anything for me even though I love Morrowind and Oblivion, even though it was supposed to be the "latest and greatest."

Well, V has less interiors, casino is locked in the game files, a LOT of good stuff has been cut out, and etc etc. Other than that, people are growing up, or are trolling as f*ck.

Things that other GTAs have that GTA V does not :

* Very immersive environment/world provided by a good amount of different interiors.
* Decent, interesting storylines that more relate to the self-interests of a career criminal - not f**king cops.
* Better storyline structure and layout with a more straightforward theme.
* Much better variety of side missions that actually relate to crime, not leisure and outdoor activities.
* Much better, and more memorable protagonists and antagonists.
* Much better economy system (in VC and SA only).
* WAY more focus on single-player

The 3D era has an "arcade-ish" feelings that (for me) is funnier that everything GTA V can offer. It's not "better", because the new "ragdoll physic" is indeed a great evolution, but the fact that the damage system is so unpredictable (and the one in GTA V is even worse) makes exploration and creativity a chore, not a pleasure.

Quick example: I had a lot of fun riding down from the top of Mt chiliad with a bike in SA, or jumping from a tall buildings, but in GTA V even a smal jump can kill you, and you can't even save yourself jumping in the water.
