Even without confirming, the femnazis are complaining about every girl being a prostitute or a stripper. If R* said they were going to develop a female protagonist, all of the female GTA players would automatically assume the character is going to be a sexually explicit character in some way, whether she's a hooker, prostitute, or just sleeps around. The best thing for R* to do is just put aside the idea for right now until the feminists are ready to stop complaining about it.

I actually forgot about this point. R* shouldn't care though, after all they aren't gamers. They won't affect the releae.

Maybe multiple charachters again, with one female charachter ?

I like the idea, because it's a "safe" option, giving players a choice. If it's forced on players then it will certainly affect attitudes but may also affect sales because of the ignorant population that may believe a female protagonist is a metaphor for women taking over everything

We don't need a female lead in GTA.

While I don't usually give a toss about diversity, I think a female GTA protagonist would be pretty interesting. It'd open up new opportunities for humor, and it's fascinating to think what they'd be like. A psycho like Trevor? A cold blooded hit man? A well meaning person who gets caught up in things they didn't mean to? There are so many possibilties in a series like this.

But then there's the issue of how they'd be portrayed, and I think it's a big if. I think a lot of sexist writing comes about not because the writer hates women, but because they don't understand them, and may write them differently than they would a male character even if they don't conciously mean to. What would need to be avoided to make an acceptable female GTA protagonist? Given the nature of the people you work with in these games, I imagine many would just want to sleep with you or might underestimate you for being a girl. But focus too much on that, and it'll become annoying and demeaning. There are several high ranking female bosses in the series, so hopefully earning respect wouldn't be too hard. If they have a love interest, the female should still probably be the dominate one in the relationship, not because they're female, but because they're the main characters. I'm just throwing out ideas on how a female protagonist would properly work in a game like GTA.

So, if there was a female character, how would you want prostitutes to be handled? Would you want them to add some male escorts, or allow you to hire female ones because, hey, why not?

Maybe the female rejects prostitutes' advances automatically, calling them "sluts"?

Nah, a female orgy would be more interesting.

Either that or set the game in an area where prostitution isn't common.

Rural Midwestern hookers? Anyone?

No way man. Making a Grand Theft Auto game without prostitutes would be like making a Mario game without coins, or a Zelda game without...whatever Zelda games have.

I wouldn't think hookers are THAT essential to GTA. I've been playing GTA since I was young and I didn't know about the hookers till much later.

Spoiler

If people honestly think that whether or not you'll be able to sleep with prostitutes in the game is the deciding factor to whether or not they'll allow (as if they have any say in the matter) GTA to have a female protagonist, then I might just go ahead and shoot myself now. If prostitutes are that important a part of the game for you, then I think you should probably go play something else, or just go look at some porn on the internet. Not to mention the fact that gay and bisexual women do exist. Some women like other women, it's not impossible.

Either way I think a female protagonist would be a great addition to any future GTA game. Show me somebody who doesn't want a female protagonist and I'll show you a sexist. Because there are no genuine reasons against it, that aren't rooted in some form of sexism and misogyny.

Well, the first GTA had female protagonists to choose from (although that didnt change the gameplay or anything, right?).

Anyway, if they stick to the multiple, switching characters formula, a female would work as long as they don't screw up in obvious ways. I hope they make her real and not just a nerd wet dream girl.

No, it'd be awkward to play as a girl.  :/

Have you played Mortal Kombat, Tomb Raider, Resident Evil 1,2&3, Haunting Ground, Clock Tower 3, Silent Hill 3, Mass Effect 3?  Any of them?

I'd rather not.

I don't see how R* could pull it off without her being the typical feminazi "bad bitch" that overcompensates for everything to prove she's better than men.

A fine example of this would be Elizabita Torres from IV, I just don't think you could have a female gta protag without this happening

GTA doesn't need 'spicing up' imo, I'd much rather have male protags

I am not trying to be like some "Oh GTA doesnt need a Female Protag" group of people, but i definitely agree with you bro, plus GTA will loose some of it Traditional Features i.e Strip Clubs,Hookers etc.but maybe Nightclubs could be replace with the aforementioned, but i personal cant see a GTA game without Strip clubs or Hookers or Lap Dance it like Metal Gear Solid without Snake or Boss or Sonic without Knuckles or Mortal Kombat without Lu keng or Tekken without Kazuya.

Where has all this idea about removing hookers and strip clubs from a game with a female lead come from? Because the protagonist is a woman, these characters and locations would have to disappear? These are things that are essentially backdrop. Removing their functioning doesn't render them irrelevant. The vice of a location isn't going to disappear because the main character is female. Infact, I'd wager a female protagonist would bring more to the series than it would take away. Thoughts?

@blood is in diamond: That's Kanye West lol, remember the MTV awards incident? :p

@Tyla: I know, it's silly, whoever said they had to be removed, that's really dumb. It's not like strippers or hookers are invisible to women...

I can't stop stressing this, I know, but Saints Row 2 had the most amazing (optional) female protagonist ever. She fits perfectly into the cutscenes. Even (or more like especially*) in one, where your character is just staring at a stripper with a smirk, or when your character says stuff like "you had me at stripper pole".

Another GTA -like game that had a playable chick was The Getaway 2 but it kind of sucked.

Cheers for reply.but anyways Saints Row never had Strip Club Interactivity like GTA,and there isnt Hookers in Saints Row so that fine, afterall you've got to remember the first two games (1and2) were "GTA Clones" (San Andreas Rip-offs).btw i havent play Getway.

Saints Row 2 is the only one I played and it DID have hookers though. They appear on the street (but you can't interact with them like in GTA) and you can play some side missions in which you have to drive them around while they are with some politician/celebrity doing it on the back of your car while avoiding paparazzis. And there's also another side mission in which you have to do some QTEs while your character is actually working as prostitute (male or female depending on the character you designed) with a client of the opposite sex. You can't see what's going on inside the room but you hear them moaning in a comedic way and making some ocassional funny comments :p

Yeah I can't deny they were shamelss GTA clones, they copied the gameplay, hud and a LOT of features. But Saints Row 2 improved over San Andreas and GTA IV in A LOT of ways imo, that was basically their goal when making the game, build over what GTA didn't do "right".

True but no matter how some "GTA Clones" do better in terms of gameplay than GTA,they can never dethroned the Ruler of the Genre which is GTA.

I have never been sure if a woman protag would work if she was the only protag. Now that GTA V introduced us to multiple protag's I think it could work as you could have a combination of men and women playing off each other.

I'm beginning to wonder if there's any other reason as to why people don't want a female protagonist other than mysgoginy or sexism.

hah there most likely isn't

People need to at least think about action movies that have both a male and female lead characters and how some actually manage to nail it with the characters. I recently saw one called Direct Contact, from 2009, the guy and girl protagonists were really badass.
