Vice city has my favourite GTA storyline, not just because it was my first GTA game, but because the story was epic. The characters (I liked them, some of them were funny, and I still remember most of them), the setting, the music, the story ...

The ending was sweet.

Spoiler

GTA V had an "ok" story, but it could have been better if half of the story wasn't working for the FIB. GTA V just doesn't have that magic Vice city had. Franklin becomes dull after moving to vinewood hills, Trevor is too crazy, but Michael was, overall, a good protagonist, but he has his flaws as well. Unlike these three, Tommy started from the bottom, just released from prison, and he climbed the ladder all the way to the top, the Vice city crime boss. While VC had a good ending, V had 2 sh*t endings

Spoiler
, and the other
Spoiler
was not as good as Vice city's ending.

GTA V could have been better if there was less FIB missions, and if there were more heists.

I loved GTA IV's story, it was so deep, and makes you feel like you really are Niko, trapped in a confined city. GTA V's storyline was alright, but was heavily rushed, that's the problem with it. The antagonists in GTA IV were fantastic, and really were powerful, Dimitri was a great character, I just found the antagonists in GTA V pretty boring, there was nothing memorable about them.

Ill give a little run down on what i liked of each story line that i can remember well enough.

San Andreas was a good story line because it really put you on an adventure. Its like you went through the second half of cj's entire life. You went from los angeles, to the conutry side, to san francisco, to las vegas. You saw it all. That is a pretty fun experience without a doubt in anyones mind.

GTAIV had a great story line, as it all revolved around a bag of seemingly cursed diamonds from 3 perspectives, bringing anyone who possessed them misfortune. It was the ticket out of poverty for everyone trying to desperately get a hold of them. I loved the ending as well. Nice little moral/theme going on.

GTAV seemed to be cut short, but no dlc's have been released yet so i cant say much i suppose. But it seems like the game couldve quite easily been as long as or longer than GTASA and have the same experience but it didnt really. It was just scraping the surface it seemed like. Still enjoyable however.

Vice city I dont remember too well, but i remember particularly liking the twist of lance betraying you, and taking over the mansion. Also liked the little narrations tommy did after some of the missions.

I liked the storyline of Vice City the best. The whole Mafia, Cuban/Colombian drug cartel stuff was supreme. And the Cuban-Haitian gang war, Lance's betrayal, Sonny coming south to take on Tommy, just topped it all of. What a classic storyline.

Next up is GTA IV and San Andreas, probably a draw between those two.

Grand Theft Auto IV and GTA IV: The Lost & Damned had the best storylines. I'm leaning more towards TL&D because it's the one I can relate to the most. In terms of just having a really enjoyable story, I have to go with GTA IV. Niko was such a brilliant character

Ranking from the one I liked most to the one I liked the least:

GTA IV

GTA VC

GTA V

GTA TLAD

GTA SA

GTA TBOGT

GTA III

GTA A

Stories I haven't finished:

GTA LCS

GTA VCS

GTA CW (played a little but never owned it ... should probably pick it up one day)

For me, IV was something special in terms of story. Vice CIty also had me gripped more than any of the 3D games with the wonderful characters. GTA V is a fun action story with great dialogue. TLAD doesn't quite live up to IV for me but mostly due to its lack of length because it was DLC. GTA SA was good wacky unbalanced weird fun. I didn't care too much for TBOGT's story. A lot of it felt unnecessary and forced or stuff that I felt should have been in the main game. GTA III barely has a story and GTA A just plain sucked.

*edited because I overlooked GTA V while thinking of the rest*

My ass. You either don't remember it or don't care to give it the recognition it deserves because you're all about the new & hip, fadster.

The rest of your opinion is irrelevant, because it's an opinion, but leaving GTA V off of your list entirely is shocking, considering your need to flaunt your 100% completion of the game in your signature. Now tell me you forgot. Tell me.

Anyway, getting past the rugrat bashing:

1- GTA V

2- GTA IV

3- GTA: VC

4- GTA: SA

5- GTA: TLAD

6- GTA III

7- GTA: TBOGT

8- GTA; A

9- GTA LCS

10- GTA

11- GTA 2

I don't know, but I think it's between IV and V. V had a complex story that was topped off by the crazy fun heists but IV had the darker and more sinister vibe that made the story feel deeper. Overall, I think that V has the best, even though it was a bit rushed.

V and IV have the best stories, with Vice City close behind.  The story for SA had a lot of potential, but didn't really fulfil it.

The only ones I've played extensively are San Andreas and 5, I played the first few missions in Vice City and thanks to a glitch in a GTA 4 mission I couldn't get past it leaving me unable to continue the story past the Bronx, I might get it for console this time now that I have a PS3.

So far I like San Andreas story the best, gang sh*t, going up against CRASH, officer tenpenny, great storyline if you ask me.

I liked VC because the plot was simple yet focused. It was cool how Tommy was screwed in the beginning and had to find the jerks who messed up the drug deal and the money to repay Sonny. I really felt a sense of urgency from the opening cut scene and Tommy and Ken driving back in the rain. The Scarface inspired plot was sort of cool too.

GTASA was great because you got to experience a bunch of different sub plots and environments. There was a bunch of great characters as you moved from Los Santos to the countryside to San Fierro, etc. I understand why people say the story is all over the place but to e it felt like something fresh each time you went to a different geographic location. The corrupt cop vibe also made the story sweeter.

GTAIV also had a pretty solid story because of the complex interactions between each crime family, the diamonds, and Niko. I thought some parts of the story felt repetitive and disjointed at time but i really liked how the story was lengthy.

i felt GTAV had a crap storyline because of the FIB subplot and the rushed ending. The FIB missions should have been a subplot. Trevor, Michael, and Franklin should be busy doing their own thing and coming together for heists. The three protagonist thing felt kinda forced and the relationships artificial. They could have done so much more with characters such as Madrazo, Ron, Doctor Friedlander, etc. A lot of wasted potential

1. VC/SA

2. GTAIV (a very high 2)
3. GTAV

I think GTA is best when its rags to riches...and completing side activities are necessary to advance the main story line (like buying all the businesses in VC, and CJ's journey from street thug to king of Los Santos). 4 and 5 had neither of these elements and it makes them less memorable, story-wise. Maybe the three protag experiment resulted in three watered down plots instead of one relatable tale. I think GTA 5 could've been, 1) start as homeless young Mexican cartel guy in Jaurez, 2) work your way up and then start own cartel, 3) become a pablo escobar type character based in Los Santos. and on and on it goes.

To the folks saying the GTA V story was rushed: out of interest, how long did it take you to complete the game?

It took me 2 months to finish it, and I would have to say it was the most sensational GTA story I have played. Wonderfully scripted, fantastic acting, and, whilst it would have been lovely to have more missions (but for the technological limitations, I forgive R*) not once did I feel the story was rushed. It was a predictable ending, but very suitable for a phenomenal, fun game.

San andreas, only because it had a bit of everything. casinos, mafia, petty street gangs and everything in-between.

San Andreas for sure. It was so big and cool, it was totally a adventure. Mafia, gangsters i like that style.

IV's story was good too, but wasn't so big as i expected it to be. Tough it is halarious and very dark.

GTA Vice City - The Best ever.
GTA San Andreas - Amazing characters that made the journey from Los Santos to Las Venturas so much fun and interesting.

GTA IV storyline was not at all interesting to me except the characters that made it somewhat tolerable.
