GTA III hands down. That game has something magic about it that Rockstar couldn't replicate again, even if they tried. It MADE Grand Theft Auto.
It's just a damn shame it gets so much hate because "I can't get a haircut" or "It's not about the hood" and all the other BS that comes with people introduced to the series with San Andreas.

It doesn't help that the driving kinda sucks, the auto-aim locks onto grandmother's rather than the guy shooting me or my preferred target, it has shoreside vale, the story is one of the worst I've ever seen, has some of the most annoying/not fun side missions ever (Drive into the checkpoints with absurdly short timer ... hooray!), vans roll over at the slightest turn, and I can lose health by running down a hill.

GTA III is good, but we overlook a lot of its flaws because it was the first 3D GTA. It had a ton of flaws. I recently played it to 100%, so I'm not talking without experience. It's probably special because even if it wasn't your first GTA it was probably your first 3D GTA. I don't get that 'something special' for it. For me it was Vice City until IV took over the spot.

---

My list (as of today because I'm likely to change my mind about the specific placings below #2 on a whim.)

#1: GTA IV

#2: GTA VC

#3: GTA V

#4: GTA III

#5: GTA SA

#6: GTA LCS

#7: GTA VCS

#8: GTA A

Probably VC because of teenage years in mid-late 80s. It brought the memories so strongly back in mind.

V for sure. At least for me. GTA has never been this good. My only complaint is over spawning of cops when you are wanted. They come like swarms of bees from all directions- it's real arcadey and sh*tty

Imo best story = IV
Best atmosphere and theme = Vice City
Overall best = V

Not really a fan of SA despite it being a very good game, best 3D GTA is VC , best HD GTA is V. This is my opinion though so if you disagree then im afraid we have to agree to disagree.

GTA 3 had a certain atmosphere to it that I can't explain.

It's not the best GTA sure, but no other GTA gives me that feel.

SA had an enormous amount of things to do and a huge replay factor, but lacked the 'underworld' feel from 3.
I don't understand the appeal of being a hood rat.

GTA 4 I put down really fast. It was enjoyable until people started calling me to do sh*t, and for 100% you have to do it. f*ck this noise.

GTA VC seemed like a reskinned 3 with a few extras (bike, shooting tires, gas tank etc) but still no feel! That's not a bad thing btw <3 '80s.

GTA 2 was the first GTA I completed. I wish they'd bring the respect feature back. Also the only(?) GTA represented by a real actor.

V isn't worth talking about.

For feels, 3 is the best by a long shot. For gameplay & content it has to be SA, but 2 will always hold a special place in my heart.

I don't see the point of thinking that GTA San Andreas so much, GTA V is better by 10 miles.

The story is sh*tty, and GTA V's gameplay is 10 times better.

Even IV is better than SA, in my opinion.

Vice was the best. I can't remember how many hours me and my buddies wasted on that game. PS2 if I remember.

Wheelie contests. Jump contests. Yes you do all that sh*t in everyone. But I've never played a game like I played Vice City. No game ever comes close.

Just the 80's music was worth it. Even though I hate 80's music, haha. But it just fit that game to a T.

Ahhhh, the good ol' days.

IMO SA. I just got lst in that game so many times for so many years. I'm already a little bored of V :/ The detail is amazong but the single player story was no where near as long as it could have been. I do like V it's a great game but i think they sold out SP for MP. III was a huge and brilliant step forward but SA brought customization and even more outrageousness (surely that's a word?). Vice city was also great but it just didnt tick ALL the boxes that SA did. IV was alright... :)

What's the average age of everyone here I wonder?

True old school players will not pick GTA5.
