Since I play old games on a Playstation 1 regularly, Vice City is completely playable to me.

Can't share your feelings, I just started Vice City over again, and I have more fun playing it than the the last one that came out ! Your deception may come from the PS/PC transition ?

The graphics don't bother me at all, just consider how much work was put into this game, and how much fun you had it.

We can't just tell what game is better, it all depends on our tastes etc. Vice City is a tribute to the awesome time the eighties were, when you watch Scarface, Miami Vice, and then get into this game, I swear it's 10 times more fun, and since GTA is aiming a younger public, they might not get all those references/easter eggs. Some of you kids/teenies might just not be able to appreciate the game, and so it's naturally that if you get back to it, you can only see the game mechancics of 2002.

Just to tell you, I knew every single track from the OS before the game came out, but that might also be because I'm a bit older, so I might just appreciate this game because it makes me remember.

PS : I'm still astonished how many of you youngsters learned to appreciated the lifestyle/music through the atmosphere of the game.

It sounds like you guys got a little too spoiled with fantastic graphics.. If you can't play a game that's truly stood the test of time and still resonates with some of the greatest games created, over the "poor" graphics and gameplay then maybe you should take a step back and realize that creates these games isn't what makes them look good. Yes, graphics are a strong point but you have to get through your head that Vice City is 12 years old. Nothing is going to look shiny, brand new on something that was a decade ago. i didn't read through the whole topic because it looked like a generic argument topic but I have to say that the first thing I did when I got my new PC was throw in Vice City, SA, and III. I didn't bitch once, in fact that's what i'm going to go play when I leave this topic. Fact of the matter is, I would choose any of the 3D-era games over the HD-era games in a heartbeat. I haven't played GTA IV in almost a year, and I don't even think of GTA V anymore (what a f*cking let down that game was). It's not because of "nostalgia", or because i'm a "fanboy". It's because when I played those games, I got way more enjoyment and memories then when I played IV or V. In fact, I had a new found respect for IV after finding out how bad V was.

Honestly, if graphics made a game then there would be no decent games...
Anyway, I don't see how people can hate on VC because it isn't graphically pleasing compared to modern releases. Hell I love VC to pieces.
Yesterday I seen the map of VC again... my god it looks small but it's still fun

To be honest VC isn't that bad graphically. It's quite a nice looking game really.

Yes, but only if you play on PS2 and old crt TV. Is a very nice, stylised graphic!
But if you play on modern big LCD PC screen then... no.

I don't really get the point of this topic. It has been 5 years since i've beat this game, played it over and over again, on an LCD screen, and it wasn't bad at all. Graphics are never really that much of an issue for me. I still appreciate the story, the clever voice actor selection, Tommy Vercetti FTW, all those businesses that never got a proper makeover, all in all, I love every element of the game. The city may be small, but it was immensely detailed, at least more than gta 3 imo, and also vc must be one of the single greatest titles in the series, with 3 and 4, I guess?
If you guys really think VC feels so worse graphically, go mod the textures. If by gameplay, well, that's upto you.

For me, Vice City will always look like a fresh game. The story is pretty nice, maybe basic for some people, but well made, it fit the timeline so nicely. I finished it again 1 week ago, and it's still amazing how well R* made it. I mean the music, the 80's, the city, even some characters made this game to look epic. It even have the magic feel that GTA III have in my opinion which it wasn't the case with Vice City Stories :/ . And even if the graphics looks 'bad' in 2014, remember that this game was out in 2002. 1 year after GTA III, who revolutionized the gaming experience ;) .

The graphics may not hold up very well today but the game just oozes atmosphere even after all these years.

Looking at the map really does make it feel small, especially when you look at maps of other GTA games that have been released after GTA VC. That being said though the map feels so much bigger because every aspect of the map and the game was fun. I dont think there's any part of the map that I haven't explored over the hours I spent on GTA VC.

The thing with VC's map is while it is indeed small to look at it's still fun to free roam in. My only criticism regarding the map is the oversized beach. It would've been better if the beach only extended halfway allowing for more streets/buildings to take place in the northern part.

However despite its small size VC is still one of my favourite GTA cities in between the HD and 3D LCs.

CRT TVs are the best TVs, especially the very last gen ones. I have one but i might get another.

The beach had its purposes though, I usually used it as an airstrip for the Skimmer.

Actually, that worked out better than the airstrips at the airport.

OT: I think it's still fun to play. The only thing that is annoying is the badly coded spawn system, most noticable when trying to get a Hunter out of Fort Baxter.

I agree with OP, Vice City does feel dated now. I mean I can remember how much fun it was back then and I how I was blown away by it but new game standards make it feel small. It's still an amazing game that unfortunately hasn't been topped imo by newer GTAs or other games, which may be the reason I don't feel that great when playing it again. It reminds me that gaming hasn't evolved in the right direction after years.

I bought it from the PS store and got back into it, did a 4 hour run to start with, doing the odd mission then just driving round listening to the music. Got used to it quite quickly. I play it more than GTA:O now. The graphics don't bother me, even on a 50 inch screen, I played it back in 2002 on a projector so it probably looks better now. The main thing for me, is the fun. Don't think i'll ever get bored of it.

Perhaps affected by nostalgia, but i think it looks okay. Sure it's greatly outdated, but it looks ok.

Just completed GTA3 over the weekend, and decided to move on to Vice City to play it (finally) to the completion.

And to me Vice City looks and plays great! On PS2.

-you just have to fiddle your telly settings for the best pic, though.

But anyways, VC still is a brill game. NO complaints, apart from the camera that gets jittery every time you enter cul-de-sac...

Vice City looks quite dull infront of modern games like San Andreas. I always felt that the Xbox Version was better looking than PC Version. I still feel that aiming and physics are still dodgy in Vice City.

But, San Andreas just outshines Vice City and my prolong gameplay in San Andreas has blurred Vice City experience.

I still think it's one of the best looking games in the PS2 era, I don't care how many great looking games I have played the last few years or so... this game still looks amazing and is one of my top favorite games of all time, especially in the series.

I probably couldn't go back to PS2 and play it again. But I still find it to be amazing on PC, especially with mods. I think the only reason I wouldn't go back to the PS2 version, is the lack of AA and the low resolution, I couldn't stand it after playing the PC version.

No racism intended, but the people do have a point.

I was 12 years old when I first played SA and it was incredible. Why? I lived in a neighbourhood where the "niggaz in the ghetto, dawg" gang culture was strong and alive. And being a 12 year old I let myself respect it. Not only this, but SA was an INCREDIBLE game in terms of content. Hell, the content still dwarfs GTA V.

Casinos, working out, monster trucks, hovercrafts, dual wielding, hiring gang members at will...I could go on.

But now that I go back to SA as a 19 year old, I just can't take it seriously The "gangbanger swag culture" and shyt is just sooooo goddamn annoying. Sweet, Ryder, and Smoke were my buddies back in the day but now they are just laughably illiterate delinquents with ridiculous syntax.

If SA had a more mature focus, and was centered on a gang-culture that I could actually take seriously as an adult...it would be MUCH better game. I was so happy when I got out of Los Santos for the first time...then I only had CJ talking like "yo wuzz appening ma dawg how u been nigga" instead of 3 other guys in every cutscene using the same language.

GTA3- Mafia/Triads

VC- Cartel

SA- ghetto, some presence of Triads with Woozie

GTA4- Russian Mafia

GTAV- no main gang presence, minor references to all gangs (triads, bikers, grove street)

SA still has memories for me though...such priceless memories that I cannot even begin to articulate how important they are to me. But I was 12...my mind was malleable and easily fooled into thinking an uneducated hood trash street thug could storm a high-tech military base all by himself and steal a 600,000,000 jetpack.

My only complaints with the game:

Choice of gang culture

Horrendously bad sound effects

Awful graphics

If you are using PS2 for these games, it is recommended to get Component Cable for it.

-it really improves the graphics.

You all remember how better games looked when you swapped the PS2 composite cable to RGB scart, right?

Well, change between component cable and RGB scart is just as remarkable.

BTW: component cable is the one that has 5 leads into the telly. composite only has 3, and scart uses scart, obviously.

Remember that you have to set PS2 to component on the PS2 dashboard when swapping cables...

I just bought GTA: The Trilogy for my PS2 and I'm playing GTA: Vice City right now. I've almost completed the game, the next mission I have to do is "Keep your Friends Close...".

Tommy Vercetti is a great protagonist, the storyline is a masterpiece, the music is magic and I'm loving its 80s atmosphere. To be honest, graphics aren't important to me since It's been an intense gaming experience.

I play a fair amount of older games (PS1 and PS2), so graphics aren't too much of a problem for me. I've never found graphics to be the selling point to me anyway. I'm currently playing through Vice City on the PC, after beating it previously on the PS2 in 2011 and while it looks a little stretched on my monitor, it's still a fun game.

How old are you? I haven't experienced any of this. You need to first understand the age of the game, once you understand that, and you understand that you can't expect it to play like GTA V, then you'll be OK.

I just played a bunch of PS1 Official US Playstation Magazine demo discs today on my PSone w/ the LCD screen. Games aren't about the graphics!

I was actually replaying VC on my ps2 in anticipation for V and it took me like 5 hours just to get used to how sh*tty it looked nowadays compared to IV, ESPECIALLY on my HDTV. I stopped a little bit around halfway through because V hit the stores. I tried going back to finish it last week and holy sh*t, I just couldn't. I could not get used to it, made my head hurt. Hell, I couldn't even touch IV directly after playing V, it felt so outdated. Funny part though is that I've been playing VCS on my psp with no problem for the past two months... I guess the screen size helps a lot.

Something I miss actually in the later games are those remarks Tommy makes after cutscenes.

Dumb. Florida. Moron. Who this guy think he is? Now I gotta dress like a chump and hang out with him? I like this shirt.

It's sad I memorized those lol shows how much time I've wasted on these games.

GTA V is boring
