I have been a huge fan of GTA from its beginning, and have loved every single game. However now after playing the hell out of GTA 5 I was thinking all the time I had to go back and play the old games again. I really looked forward to it, especially my all time favorite in the series Vice City.

So today I pop in Vice City on my PC, I played it on the PS2 back in the day of course, but I thought it would be nice to play it on my "monster" PC with max graphics and everything. And I was CHOCKED by how incredible ugly and stiff the game feelt. I mean it was unbeliviable. This game that I had so fond memories of, that was so "perfect" really feelt so incredible bad. Is it just insane. I had to shut it down after I ran around a bit and tried a car. It just feelt unplayable.

Should I try it again on the console instead, or what are your guys feeling on this game today? I actually often enjoy playing old games (I played through Ultima 1 and Elder Scrolls 1: Arena ffs recently). I seem to have read that it is best to play it on PC these days. I have my old dusty ps2, but I rather not bring it out if I dont have to, and i remember the frame rate on Vice City was not so good on the console.

But this game just seem to have aged so incredible badly, but its strange it was not even that long ago, I mean its the ps2 era. I remember spending hundreds of hours in this fantastic game..

I dont know if it is because I just went straight from GTA 5 back to it or what, but I honestly feel confused right now.

Probably personal feeling mixed with nostalgia, but I can play it without any problems. Sure the graphics are rather simple,  mechanics are outdated, but atmosphere created by the neons, soundtrack and trails is still wonderful.

If we're speaking about games we can't play it will be SA.

The most dated thing about VC is the aiming and camera movement.

SA  is just perfect (this is the truth mixed with nostalgia) and it works as good as new.

Play it on PC for best controls or on the Xbox for best graphics.

The thing I dislike about Vice City is some of the missions. Some of them are too hard in a way that doesn't makes sense or is unfair. Stunt jumps are good example of this. They aren't as straightforward as in III, and you will have lots of issues completing them in "G-Spotlight" because you won't be able to figure out how to do them unless you repeated the hell out of them. The reason they made stunt jumps optional for 100% completion in San Andreas is probably this: if they can't bother creating proper stunt jumps the player shouldn't bother to complete them.

Having said that I still think it's a great game. Graphics don't matter for me as long as the gameplay, story, and atmosphere are great.

The less dated version of Vice City is the Classic Xbox one.

Its because we remember those games as the current maximum graphics back then, so we remember them like we do remember our current games.. untill you see them. I remembered insane graphics and fun gameplay with Driv3r, then ive seen a few videos... holy sh*t.

That's your opinion, my is a bit different and I wouldn't ever put SA over III, VC or VCS.

In 2004 I loved it and I could play it whole days, but unfortunately I started seeing faults of the game and the gangsta sh*t lost its coolness. When I turn on the game, only to hear Ryder saying keep up mothaf*cka I can't stand it. Longest point when I got recently was SF missions, but I couldn't stand it anymore. SA was good 9 years ago, but it wasn't better than VC. Now it's just game without anything to keep me interested.

Ugh, feel like throwing my dinner back up... :sarcasm:

I don't see any problem with Vice City, but yeah it really does feel and look entirely different after playing the newer GTA titles. I have Vice City, III and San Andreas on Steam.

Vice City is nowhere in the realm or level of San Andreas. But some people will NEVER give a game with a mostly black/latino cast like San Andreas full credit because a game set in the hood with a black male protag being better than a game with an ultra generic white Italian Scarface thug is embarrassing for some people to admit. I don't know if people who think VC is better than SA honestly believe it, or are just saying things from their lips.

SA was a step up from VC though. I just free roamed and ran about in the gym and mod shops etcetera... I know the gangster vibe is too annoying but the physics kinda made sense...

I'm latino myself and I hated San Andreas with such a passion... GTA III is still the best from the series.

Or people have one of those things, what are they called...oh yeah, preferences. Some people don't like San Andreas as much because the story is more over the top than before (it really sh*ts the bed two thirds in the story) and CJ is a bit whiny compared to other characters.

Obviously Vice City feels outdated when you compare it to todays games however with me it will always be a great game just for the nostalgia aspect alone. Yes the cars fell extremley arcadey, the shooting mechanics are awful as are the graphics. Take all those negatives but if you add up the positives like Tommy Vercetti, storyline, the music it easily outways the negatives. I had so much fun in Vice City be doing very simply things like collecting the money the businesses generated, i even remember i had my own route to collect all the money. Its just a great game and for me tops all GTA's by a large, large margain.

I would do the same, but GTA Vice City came out when I was sort of young. Young enough to be irrisponsible with my disc. Remember that "Error reading Grand Theft Auto Vice City DVD" error? 2 minutes of playing Vice City and it's all I get.

You honestly believe that the majority of people wont say that San Andreas isn't a good game because it has a large black and latino cast? That is ridiculous. I for one am not a huge fan of San Andreas but i can admit that it is a good game. The problem I had with it wasn't the fact that it had a large black or latino cast, it was the fact that about 60% of the way through the story it got into the realm of Saints Row type storyline. They went completley over the top with the storyline. Now I dont think that GTA games have to be realistic in everything they do but the way San Andreas jumped from the gang life to the robbing military vehicles and owning 50 houses and a casino etc was a step to far for me. So for you to throw out the fact that you think San Andreas isnt liked by a portion of the GTA fan base because of race is just laughable and childish on your part.

Vice City is still good to me. I know the camera angle and shoooting mechanics are clunky, but that's nothing new, I was complaning about that since the first day I played VC. As for VC verse SA, if we put storylines aside to avoid opinion - SA was much better at staying timeless because of it's smooth controls and improved shooting/aiming. Other than that, both games are still worth playing.

I never felt bad about Vice City, although of course it did blow my mind back in 2003 or so. I've played it every year since then so maybe that's why it always looked okay to me. After playing GTA 4 on my computer I liked Vice City even more since the controls are faster, more arcadish in Vice City.

Although this post is a week old you SA fanboys are just.....how do I say this nicely?

Anyway there are a few annoyances I have with VC like the lack of swimming and aiming which is a bit dodgy, but all in all I still love to play it even today. SA doesn't convey that despite being technically better.

VC has a unique charm SA and its "content" just doesn't have.
