Now that online is out and working for most of the people it's fair to ask this question

Is GTA V the best GTA game or not? Not going to put any complex answers just yes or not :)

IMO the only thing from putting yes on this is SA, it was one of the best games I played at that age and it's hard to top that although this game is epic in so many ways too

No doubt a fantastic game, but I still like Vice City better.

Comparing them is really ...Meh.

If you released Vice City from a decade ago along side current GTAV side-by-side, people would instantly favor GTAV, because of the advances.

Let's all agree that Call Of Duty is the devil.

Until another GTA has three cities, perfect countryside to get lost in, multiple protagonists, gang recruitment, car customization, buyable safe houses, the ability to equip masks on the fly, RAGE, hydras, great and realistic gangs, and everything else that made GTA V and SA great, then those two GTAs are at a tie for me.

Since I don't play online, SA wins due to better free roam activities, which is the most important part of a GTA game for me. GTA V outshines it in other areas though, just not the main selling point.

I don't know what to tell you. I still think San Andreas and Vice City were the best games, with the Stories mashed between them.

V will rank somewhere in the middle of these. Without a doubt it's the best one they've released since Vice City Stories at the least.

V=GTA SA or it's better than GTA: SA

Wait until GTA 5 comes out on PC and the DLCs. Then we'll see some epic stuff.

I think San Andreas is the best GTA game ever.

Vice City was a rush job, and GTA III felt bare. San Andreas had a lot to offer.

I don't know. I like to take them as their own experiences, not stack them against each other.

GTA 1 & 2 - Never finished them, but the top-down wasn't for me.

GTA III - I loved the atmosphere in this game, not sure what it was but it was great. Shooting system was horrid. No swimming was a bitch and the camera needed a lot of work. 8/10.

GTA Vice City - Still no swimming, still the same awful shooting system. Great soundtrack and it nailed the 80's vibe. I liked the celebrity voice-overs like William Fichtner as Ken Rosenburg and Dennis Hopper as Steve Scott. I used to love to mess around with the flying car cheat. 8/10.

GTA San Andreas - A massive and diverse map, but with a rather lifeless environment. Another home-run soundtrack, and now swimming was finally in. Planes were extremely fun to fool around in. Story was mediocre and felt rushed, all over the place and losing focus. Customization was great for clothing and haircuts. It had a better shooting system, but it's pretty bad going back to it today. 9/10

GTA Liberty City Stories - The great atmosphere from GTA III returns and I loved the almost all-original, in-house soundtrack. Definitely had a better story than GTA III. I was disappointed that they didn't implement swimming. And hell, it was a full-fledged GTA on the go. 9/10.

GTA Vice City Stories - Great Soundtrack, and FINALLY swimming in Vice City. Aircraft was lame because the altitude ceiling was ridiculously low. A mediocre story. I loved the business empire aspect. It ran pretty bad though, horrible frame dips and bad pop-in. 8/10

GTA IV - Definitely had the best story in the series, I loved Niko, Packie, Little Jacob and Dwayne. Some of the atmosphere from the PS2-era Liberty City found it's way into the new one. A MUCH better combat system than any GTA game up to that point. So much unbelievable level of detail. I loved the internet and Republican Space Rangers. The city felt real, like a place you could actually find yourself living in, just because of how detailed the enivronment was. My only faults are the mixed-bag soundtrack and piles of useless cash. 10/10

GTA IV TLAD - A really mediocre story and the biker theme wasn't for me. The grain filter was stupid and I always had it off. The new weapons were great. The dialogue was well-written. 7/10

GTA Chinatown Wars - Probably my least favorite. It's pretty amazing how they managed to fit most of GTA IV's map onto the DS. The story was extremely uninteresting and of course the lack of any decent music was a huge blow. I wasn't fond of the "arcade" style that the game had. 6/10

GTA TBOGT - It certainly brought back some of the over-the-top stuff from San Andreas, like parachutes and action-packed missions. The new weapons were fantastic and the new songs were great. I wasn't big on the story or Luis, it all felt too forced, like R* was trying to play catch-up with Saints Row 2, and yes I really did just say that. Mission replays were a fantastic addition to the series. 9/10

GTA V - I'm still letting it all sink in, after all, it's only been out for a month now and it takes time to fully-appreciate GTA games (I STILL find things I didn't know about in IV). I'll start with the main characters. Franklin is definitely the only "sane" one of the group, sort of like Niko in GTA IV. I thought he was cool, but it got tiresome listening to him complain, especially to Lamar. Michael is probably my favorite, a real chill guy living the everyman, blue-collar lifestyle and then makes his way back into the criminal underworld. I really loved the family aspect because you don't get much of that in video games. Steven Ogg gives the best performance as Trevor. It's really hard to get me to laugh, but Trevor managed to make me do it on several occasions. I loved the scene where

Spoiler
. The map is great, but I wish there were more small towns, a criticism I had of RDR also. The soundtrack this time around is another mixed bag, but I love Space, Radio Mirror Park and LSRR. The planes are definitely better than in San Andreas, flying style and selection. The shooting system isn't as good as IV's and I miss being able to see enemy health. The missions and side activities are a lot of fun, especially base jumping with that godly track that goes with it.

9/10

No way. GTA V is a great game despite it's flaws, but it is certainly not the best in the series.

My favorite GTA game is still Vice City, closely followed by San Andreas.

Let's all be honest here, the story for gta5 was not so great. Better than gtasa but worse than gta4. Never the less, yeah it's nothing special. There are games out there with more amazing story lines like the half life series. Too add to hat, those games primarily focus on the story and have linear maps. You don't usually have freedom to to whatever. But, grand theft auto is not primarily about the story, it's about the freedom. You can give that to all the gta's- freedom. You can pretty much do what your imagination pleases.

The only reason why people think gta5 is the best game is because the is a Gta forum. Ask on some general website like 4chan or reddit and you will have great difference than here. And I will greatly promise you, gta5 won't be number 1.

But that's just my snippet of my opinion.

I believe V is the best. Considering everything overall. GTA V is an awesome game. They brought back the awesome (and even improved) graphics from GTA IV. The water alone looks pretty awesome. This is probably the main reason previous GTAs seem outdated.

The detail is impressive. Warning tracks on the highways, scrapes and bruises after scuffles, hair detail, car damage detail, texturing, lighting, etc. They really paid attention. Moon phases. Puddles during rain storms. While viewing your cell phone, browsing through menus, Michael/Trevor/Franklin actually browse through the exact same menus at the exact same time as you do.. even in cars and taxis.

They brought back flight from GTA SA and even increased the aircraft selection. They ALSO brought back swimming, with even more area to explore, whether you prefer to or not. The simple fact that they reintroduced swimming also helps create a deeper and more dynamic, living enviroment. (If they hadn't included swimming, I would have definitely been disappointed.) Car modification is back. Weapon modification. Good selection of clothes. They reintroduced animals in an even more interactive way. And they introduced pets. You can still hang out with friends, a few more old activities and a couple new sports are available.

The story is pretty good, but I am even more thrilled about the dynamic 3-protagonist system. You can switch practically at any time, and the presentation of this is awesome. Cut scenes and all. Safehouses may be limited, but they are pretty interactive as well. I like that aspect too, despite the limited properties.

The game overall is just more dynamic. The environment (pools to lakes to seas, deserts to pastures to beaches to city grids, valleys to plateaus to mountains and the sky), travel (flying, walking and swimming), the character system (3 varied, interchangeable characters), and the automobile/aircraft selection is great. I also enjoy the soundtrack. The smoothness of the game is quite appealing too. No real loading times despite a dense, detailed map or while switching characters either.

As mentioned, the map/environment is really dynamic and fun to explore, at least in my opinion. Grabbing an ATV and running through the country/mountainside is pretty fun. After completing the story, there lis still plenty to do.... if not just riding around ang checking out the sites. But of course causing a little mayhem is great fun too. The cop-evasion system is great in GTA V. It feels more authentic. You don't just simply drive a long way away from the cops, but you must actually hide from their view, out of sight. It just feels a bit more realistic, to me anyway. And yes, gang members are present and are hostile. I was sitting in an expensive car at a red light and unprovoked, the gang members attempted to jack it. I sped off as they fired shots.

I definitely feel as though this is a step up from past GTAs. I enjoy it for what it is, not what it isn't. Flight, swimming and such should all be staples in every GTA. These things set GTA V above GTA IV in my opinion. The graphics along with the detail, density of the environment, actual character-model motion and the activities that ARE available (although maybe slightly limited) set this GTA above San Andreas in my opinion.

Even without Online, it's the best GTA yet. With just a few things changed & added, it could've been even better.
