And surely all you need for Gridiron is a ball?

You are forgetting the pansy kit that rugby players don't use. But it isn't even remotely expensive, every inner city poor kid plays football/gridiron. The argument that it isn't popular elsewhere because it is cost prohibitive is simply ludicrous.

The only sport you can make that argument for is probably hockey since you need about 700-1000$ worth of kit to play it.

well a certain kind of ball, yes.

the soccer ball is clearly much more common than the football.

I'm not saying that cost is the only factor but it's the most significant.

soccer is simply the easiest thing for any kid who doesn't know how to do anything else to pick up. you just kick the ball. and then follow it.

it's probably the least complex sport in its purest form.

So why do no other first world countries play American Football?

I like American egg tossing but the fans of the sport that know nothing about football do my head in. Most ignorant bunch of arseholes I've ever came across.

1) you spelled "Americans" wrong.

2) the kid in the picture plays the position of a linerbacker; they're supposed to be the largest men on the team due to the job they perform. if they're skinny/small then they won't be effective.

3) the kid in the picture is only in college. he's an amateur, not a professional. most of them don't become professional athletes.

if you're going to make fun of our sh*t, at least do a half-assed job of it.

I thought soccer fans were supposed to be more sophisticated than us slack-jawed Yankees :beerhat:

The guy above is probably more athletic than the vast majority of soccer/rugby players.

Hell, NFL kickers would give those sports players a run for their money.

How is he one of the greatest English athletes? He wasn't even a good dart player tbh.

Nipperkins, don't you support Arsenal? How the f*ck can you mock England when you support a football club here.

To be serious, when you compare American football and baseball, the players spend more time sitting around and having stopages or setting up new plays . I doubt any of them could run for 90 minutes like in a European football match. Baseball is probably the laziest sport ever created.

It is about as American as mutton biryani.

Highly unlikely. While I don't doubt that this guy is extremely good and useful for his specific position, he wouldn't last a full 80minutes playing rugby. It is simply not what his body has been trained and moulded to do. In his role, and all roles on an NFL team, explosive power and brute strength for about 5-10 seconds at a time is valued above endurance and intelligence.

to be serious, you clearly don't know anything about the conditioning of pro athletes in the US.

just because they don't train to sprint for 90 minutes at a time doesn't mean they're lazy.

one has nothing to do with the other.

European football is a completely different type of sport with completely different definitions of success than baseball and gridiron.

Baseball is meh to a lot of Americans.

 no it's not.

if you look at the numbers, baseball and football are the 2 most popular sports in the US.

why do you think baseball is the ONLY sport referred to as "America's Pastime" ??

explosive power and brute strength for about 5-10 seconds at a time is valued above endurance and intelligence

that's not true either.

it simply depends on the position.

the linemen rely on brute strength and power, but they only account for 1/3 of the team. and even those guys have to memorize huge playbooks (hundreds of pages) and understand enough strategy about the game in order to know the best position to be in before the play develops. to be successful at the pro level you have to anticipate, not just react.

most of the rest of the team relies on finesse and intelligence.

I implore you to learn more about the game before attempting to make fun of it again :pp

You really can't make a post without sounding like an arrogant jerk and including a veiled swipe at people, can you? It is getting pretty hilarious. You must be an absolute joy to hang around in person and a real social butterfly.

No no, I just think it is funny how in every thread you post in you have to be some big arrogant holier than thou persona. That is all. I wasn't taking a shot at you, just making an observation. Calm down, refrain from sexist comments, don't get all bent out of shape.

This is the thing you guys don't seem to understand, I'm not making fun of the NFL or American football. As I've stated numerous times in this topic I like the sport a lot, I watch it regularly and I do have a lot of respect for those who play it. I'm simply trying to make the point that the less regimented and specialized nature of other sports such as rugby and football requires a different, more well-rounded player.

@El Diablo et al: don't immediately go on the defensive. I'm not insulting your sport, I'm just trying to make you see things from an alternative, objective perspect

I'm not bent out of shape and I was never on the defensive.

did you guys stumble onto the internet yesterday?

it's not serious business.

also, the Admiral calling me holier than tho might be the ironic post of the year....

says who?

you really can't tell what's going on, can you?

you started this whole thing with a defensive, bent-out-of-shape, and completely arrogant comment of your own.

You really can't make a post without sounding like an arrogant jerk and including a veiled swipe at people, can you? It is getting pretty hilarious. You must be an absolute joy to hang around in person and a real social butterfly.

the tone of the discussion was pretty lax before this point.

nothing I said was arrogant. we were just talking about the points that were raised in the topic.

you've never met me. you know nothing about me.

suddenly you're overflowing with sarcastic deductions about my life and character which you've distilled through nothing more than a handful of textual posts on the internet.

that's about as "holier than thou" as it gets....

Still doing it, i'm going to move on now though because you are clearly so upset that this possibly can't go anywhere but downhill. Just try to be more calm and less insulting in your posts, its really not necessary.
