I'd like to know what you can do instead of all the bad things.

The things I enjoy: you can modify cars, use the stock market, retrieve stolen goods for robbery victims, find hidden objects (e.g. parts of a spaceship), parachuting, scuba diving.

The less enjoyable things: play darts, golf, tennis, do yoga.

There is murder, one awful scene of torture, prostitutes, hit n runs, armed robbery, depictions of anal sex. If your son is mature and smart there shouldn't be a problem. He's old enough to value life and know it's pretend. I played the first GTA when I was 12/13.

If I was a parent I wouldn't let my kids play until they were 16 I think. To be honest, I would want them out enjoying the real world.

Good luck. It's a tough world to be a parent in.

define 'bad'.

if you wish to wrap your children in cotton wool then this game is probably not for you, there are a lot of nuances and references to mature content even outwith missions, pedestrians shout various abuses etc.

If you chose to not do the storyline then the game doesnt move forward too much, missing out on a lot of the content.

Personally I think this game is fine for a 17 year old if their mindset is of a 17 year old and not a 13 year old. My little brother has played it (hes 15). He knows the difference between right and wrong, he knows that you can steal cars, kill people and smoke from a digi-bong or get drunk but he also knows that its just a game. Its not a harmful game, if anything the dialogue is too high brow for a lot of people and warns of many of the pitfalls of modern life be it drugs, crime, government, corruption etc.

I would say yes, let him play it. play it yourself even.

If you are asking us for parental advice, then you have failed as a parent. You should know what is good or bad for your child, go and do some research online, or even call your local game store. Your kid is 17, that's old enough for him to buy the game by himself in the US. He isn't 9 or 12 years old. I'm also certain that he isn't going to be bothered by all the vulgar language, drugs, or sex acts.

As I said in your previous topic, it's not your choice.

Its your choice as a parent but the game is rated 17+ in the US.

A 17 yr old should be able to handle what this game has to offer.

Children shouldnt play Videogames before 18 at all. There are other more important things during adolescence.

He is 17.

If he cannot handle this game at that age, your parenting is probably to blame.

My 15 year old brother plays and he is not a psychopath. He has also previous played GTA SA and IV

I'd like to know what you can do instead of all the bad things.

Golf

Tennis

Take Chop for a walk/find stuff

Customize cars

Drive boats

Ride Jetskis

Ride bikes, such as BMX's

Play darts

Do Yoga

Explore/walk around

Drive cars/bikes/trucks etc around the map

Get a cop car and pretend to be a cop by patrolling the streets

Customise your character with various clothing options

Swim

Deep sea diving/exploration

Take part in triathlons

Fly planes

Skydiving

Plenty more to do in GTA5 than the usual bad stuff. R* should release another version of GTA5 with all the mature content cut which would be ideal for the younger gamer.

I let my 7 yr old play time to time. Just free-roam though. Way too much adult content during missions but a 17yr old should be mature enough to handle it. I was 7/8 when i played the original GTA & have played ever since.

Yup. sounds like that story from the "some disappoint kids" thread.

Unless he's 12 or so, he does things far worse.

GTA is technically a 18 and to buy it you must be 18, but all the extra features E.G the social club are only 17 plus so i think he should be allowed.

Short answer is yes. There's a fine difference between being the age of 17 and acting like a 17 year old.
