Having three protagonists doesn't take away from the story or the emotional attachment to the main characters, if anything it opens up the possibility of better and more cinematic stories. The only reason it didn't work in V is because the story wasn't long enough to support three characters. If we got about 40-50 missions per protagonist I'm pretty sure it would feel as right as any other GTA game.

One or two protagonists. Three is too much and it's getting boring to have to change characters all the time.

What do you guys think of one main protagonist, with the ability to hop into "secondary protagonists" or simply control other characters in game?

If any of you can remember, there was this really old game on the PS2 generation called 'Scarface: The World Is Yours'. GTA IV copies from that game's whole 'Search radius' wanted level systrem. In that game, the main protagonist was Tony Montana, but the game eventually unlocks an Assassin, Driver and Hitman characters working for Scarface that you can control.

I think that would be the best idea. It would have one character for maximum storyline complexity and connection. Then you would be able to control other characters - maybe the guy you hire to do jobs for you later in the game when you build your own criminal empire. These guys can be 'disposable' in that when they die, all you lose is the money you paid them, without getting busted or wasted yourself. They will be perfect for crazy suicide missions like busting into a cop station to kill the chief of police.

They will also allow for more realistic specialist missions. It is unrealistic to have one guy who's both an expert getaway driver, a crack marksman and a body-building enthusiast great at physical work (melee attacks, running from cops, climbing etc...).

So you can hire an athletic femme fatale for stealth missions, a tough biker to go rough up people for your protection racket, an ex-secret agent sniper for assassinations and an obese getaway driver for some trick driving. And the best thing is you will still be the person controlling everything, without worrying about keeping up with a dozen different storylines.

Also I think it would be better if they didn't know eachother like in GTA IV/EFLC. Most of GTA V's story revolves around the fragile relationship of Michael and Trevor with Franklin serving as the middle man.

If they were perfect strangers to eachother and only crossed at certain points I think the attachment individually would be much stronger.

A part of me feels like they will keep the multiple protag concept for the next one. But if they do it , it will just be 2 people imo.

However, I would prefer they go back to just 1 main guy. Just throwing some speculation of mine out there for the hell of it. They will probably go back to 1 main guy just for the simple reason of saving development time. 3 main characters took a lot of time to write for . All the Mo cap and voice over sessions needed for each individual. They could in theory save 5 - 7 months of Dev time - mo cap, VO just by doing one character.

Which that all means the quicker they can get GTA 6 to us. My guess is we will hear about 6 come late 2016, 2017.

3 was good, I did enjoy that new aspect, but I think it'd be good to have all 3 of them from the get-go, instead of being stuck with one character for ages until the next one unlocks.

Lol spot on mate.

As amazing as that mission was, like many GTA games, the protagonist is an inhuman ace in everything, and Tommy Vercetti

Spoiler

I think it will be alot more realistic and fun to switch to a potentially infinte number of supporting characters with nothing but a few general dialogue lines.

When robbing a bank or casino and getting barricaded by cops or gangsters, your player character can just hang back and call a four-man squad of fighters to come clear the way for you. You'll then have the option of jumping to control the point-man of this tactical squad of mercenaries, seasoned gangsters, terrorists or whatever, and leading them head-on into a confrontation with the cops of gangsters. Since it's not you, you can take incredible risks, and if the guy your controlling dies, it isn't mission over - you just jump back to the protagonist, perhaps with the option of calling more back-up.

Another possibility is playing as the protagonist securing the bank floor, then switching to the getaway driver for the getaway.

It will keep you constantly in the action like in GTAV, but without having to develop seperate characters, and with far more than just three people to control. Also the constraint of keeping all three alive will be gone too.

3 protagonists in 3 different cities with 3 different lifestyles who are acquaintance to each other but never work together, only against each other and are united in the final missions to take down a bigger threat (say, the mafia or the triads). That would be cool to see.

3 protags who have their own stories and rarely meet so it doesn't make the protag characters deaths determinant.

I don't think it's necessarily about the how many there should be but rather the storyline in the game.

If the game has an intention to focus on a story like GTA III, a character being left for dead by his girlfriend and now wishes to get revenge, then there should only be 1 protagonist

If the game has an intention to resolve around something like a gang, like GTA SA, it would be interesting to get many different characters to play so we can see everybody's individual perception of gang life and the world around them.

How about different protags with different gangs?

Yes, that would also be a very good idea, I never thought of it.

There could be many great storylines made from an idea like this and there could be some interesting twists as well for the ending. :^:

Should be interesting. Multiple protags is the greatest thing ever. I'm hoping we get another 3, or 4. I personally wouldn't like to only have 2.

Gotta disagree with myself now. Two protagonists would be dope as hell. With three, one of 'em has to be an unnecessary addition, and it feels more like 2 1/2, like GTA V...

Thought of this. I even pitched the idea to Rockstar. And then about a year later, I wrote my own damn story revolving around the idea.
