What do you think?

Was it worth 5 years?

GTA IV wasn't worth the wait. But hey, it is what it is.

If anything, it was over hyped by the fans.

Worth V years? Hell no.

Remote control car physics aside, the replay value of V is still looking skeptical at best.  Sure it will keep us occupied much longer than IV; but if R* wants to keep taking a half decade to make games like this, then I doubt the series will ever live up to the hype.

Yes, a bit.
Though still one of the best games I have ever played. But still, it was a bit over hyped.

I think what happened is next gen consoles (xbone, PS4) are kind of in the back of people's minds... and they watch all these trailers (with enhanced graphics) and cut scenes and prettyness... and R* says they have all this stuff in the game and how robust it is...

BUT we all forget that this is still just a current gen game. I think it was so hyped that we expected something next gen-ish... when we have to remember this game is not next gen.

They have already ruined the series by putting more emphasis with GTA Online and more likely we have to pay more to use it. Cockstar has sold out and I will never buy another GTA again after this.

I'll keep buying GTA.  I just think it's pathetic how many of the features we were directly told about are not even in the game.  I'm just not much of an online gamer either.  It degrades the imagination and escapism of SP in favor of spending hours playing against a bunch of angry children with hacks/mods/etc.

This game was the last hope for many like myself who thought the industry left us out to dry.  If R* was going to sell out, then they could've at least gone out in a blaze of glory and pack SP with the features they know we really want.  Just as in IV, I get a sense that R* is telling the fanbase what to like.

YES!  And what was infinitely worse, it is still being overhyped by fans.

Likes:

Map size

Dislikes:

-Graphics (Yep!  Because going "too fast" brings some major frame rate and pop in issues.)

-Map size (Yep!  Because it's mostly a hassle if not a bore to get from one side of it to another).

-Story mostly sucked, didn't make me care about the fate of any of the protagonists.

-...who were pathetic.  Why would I want to play a loser in any video game, especially GTA?

-...and were scumbags.  No reason to their rhyme, 'cept they just wanted money *yawn*

-Vehicle damage (Where is it?  Replaced by a hand-holding mechanism.)

-You can flip your car back on its wheels with the analog stick.  WTF?

-No hydraulics... except on the roof of the car, I'm guessing...

-Tennis instead of basketball.  Nice.

-Stock market instead of gambling.  Heck, they don't even have a casino worth mentioning.

-Sub-par soundtrack, when we KNOW they can do better.

-No jetpack.  Sky-diving but no jetpack.  Aaaaalrighty...

-No emergency vehicle missions (police, firefighter, ambulance).  This one's just unforgivable.

-Overly explicit voiceover if you use a hooker.  Funny idea when it was new.  They made it weird.

-Torture mission.  I HAVE to slowly pull teeth out of an innocent person's mouth?

Odd choices, Rockstar...  Something you need to tell us?  Anyway...

Dislikes, Pt. 2:

-Practically no reward for finding all the collectibles in the disproportionately huge map.

-Why can't I walk ten feet in Los Santos without someone inexplicably antagonizing me?

-Why is everyone addicted to obscenities?  Is Rockstar trying too hard to be "bad"?  I think so...

-Why can't I start or participate in a gang war/acquisition of territory?

-Why can't I date anyone?  Was this your way of admitting you don't know how to do it RIGHT?

-Can't enter that many buildings, and models seem to repeat quite a bit.

-Still the same horrible hand to hand and melee.  Gunplay could use some work too.

-Can't buy a safehouse... Really?

-Dealings with the cops are too hard.  They're psychic marksmen who take forever to shake.

-Can't crouch.

-Can't take a human shield, put people in your trunk and drive around with them, etc.

-Can't shoot while jumping out of a vehicle or over objects.

-Can't hijack a vehicle while leaping from your moving car to the other.

-Can't buy a car, blow it up, and get another one from your garage.

(BTW the last four things are bars raised by Sleeping Dogs, in case you're wondering)

-Skill progression system = trash.

-Can't aim before shooting while driving a car.

I... I think that's about it.  So much for GOTY, eh?  Or at least truly earning the title...

It won GOTY because other games on their best day are nowhere near as good as Rockstar GTA games on a bad day.  But other than the mind-blowing GTAV virtual world design, this was not the best of days for Rockstar.

Yes and no. They promised us all sorts of things, and we didn't get all of them....
Yet.
DLC will give us much, if not all, of what was missing. It could have been better, but it's a damn good game as it is and lived up to the hype in just about every way.

Online heists, content creator, laser pointers (I know, pointless and I don't care that it was excluded, but still), several vehicles, and other things like gang wars were implied, though never verbally promised (see Franklin's trailer).

Heists and content creator - true.

Laser pointer - You mean from that one screen with the police helicopter? Because the laser was coming from that, not the guy.

I thought only one air vehicle was excluded?

And yeah, gang stuff was implied.

That's still not much, and half your list is coming, so I'd say they've done a pretty good job.

And I just remembered the word 'promised'.

Laser sights and gang stuff was not 'promised'. Implied? Yes, but not promised.

By only releasing a few trailers and screenshots, then reveling gameplay until a few weeks before release, I'd say that Rockstar did hype it.

It's human nature to be curious, and Rockstar took that to their advantage. I guess you could say yes the fans did hype it up themselves, but then again, a bullet doesn't shoot itself. You need a gun.

So I say yes, Rockstar did overhype it. I think they hyped the Online more than they did the single player though.

A: Did not wait 5 years, had other things to do.

Yes and.. hmmm...

I'm still thinking...
