I made this account to add to the reports. Hopefully people continue to post and make noise about the issue and Rockstar is forced to respond. I've had all the same issues as stated before:

2008 fat xbox 360, refurbished from microsoft after an RROD, no HDMI, 20GB

I've tried every install combination between HD, flashdrive, cloud, and disc

I've tried clearing all my caches, knocking resolution down to 480, cleaning out all the dust (very carefully, and meticulously)

The longest I've been able to play has been 11 minutes before freezing. Its froze indiscriminately during the loading screen, intro cut scenes, missions, driving, walking, in the sparse countryside, city, etc. All other games run fine including halo4, red dead, gta4, bioshock infinite, and skyrim.

I'm curious to hear if anyone with this type of refurbished xbox hasn't had these issues.

Same problem here. Xbox from 2006, original 20gb model, sent in for repairs in 2009 for RROD. I bought a 250 gb hard drive for it, but otherwise it's the same console I've had for years. I can't play for more than 30 minutes without the game freezing on me, and I've tried every troubleshooting step I've seen here and on other websites. I submitted a ticket to R*, got a general response listing steps for me to try, replied that none of the steps helped, but haven't heard back yet. I hope they find a fix for this problem soon, since the common denominator seems to be older Xbox 360's.

2006 refurbished w/ hdmi here. Works with every other game I own, physical copy or digital. The game I played prior to gta 5 was blacklist and I didn't have a single issue. Not to compare games but both are recent titles and I didn't have stutters with blacklist. I understand that GTA 5 is taxing many times over most if not all titles for the current consoles ( skyrim was also a beast ) but I've done my part. To elaborate I have a fully operational 360 with an insane amount of free space. The one hour of straight gameplay I had with this game ( before it locked up ) was amazing. Never played anything like it. That being said I've done everything short of selling my first born and purchasing a new system to play. It's a great game but it's not a "buy a new system to play" great. Just the thought of it makes me cringe and my wallet could take the hit.

Registered just to let you people know it's not just 'old' 360s. Sent this to R* support -

To whom this may concern,

I have recently purchased GTAV and find it unplayable due to freezing, pop-in, blurred textures, and a number of other graphical/technical issues. I have a new slim Xbox 360 and have followed the instructions you have set out. I have swapped the disc at my retailer. I have cleared my cache. I have tried playing with both discs installed and with only disc 1 installed. I have searched your support threads and came across this - http://support.rocks...-hardware-issue - and I think it is worth noting that I have both Max Payne 3 and L.A. Noire and experience none of the issues listed. I also have many other non-R* games that run without issue.

I am appalled at the sheer amount of glitches in this game. The quality of this game is unacceptable and I would like to know if you are working on a fix for these issues. I will be reporting these issues to several local media outlets and will attempt, through word-of-mouth, to advise fellow consumers of the technical issues in GTAV.

Thank you.

I just got off the phone with Rockstar Support.  They are still in the process of gathering data and trying to determine if this is something that is patchable - at least that is what I was told.

If you are experiencing freezes with GTA V, the best way to help is by performing the following steps.

Before troubleshooting, please check the following:

  • a. Turn the console off and on.
  • b. Unplug all power cords and accessories, and then plug them back in firmly. Make sure all connections are secure.
  • c. Update your console software.

1.) Clearing Game Cache:
To clear the Xbox 360 cache select Settings==>System==> Storage ==> then highlight the HDD, press Y for Device Options… and then simply select “Clear System Cache”. Select Yes when prompted to perform Hard Drive Maintenance.
* = Deleting the cache will remove temporary game files and updates. Saved games, profiles, DLC etc will NOT be removed.

**Please note, if the game freezes during installation, please check the following article:
http://support.rocks...V-installation-

2.) Clear the Game Cache.
Clearing the Game Cache on the Xbox 360 is a separate function from clearing the System Cache. In order to do so, you must hold the LEFT Bumper, RIGHT Bumper, and the X button all at the same time on the Xbox 360 controller as a game is launching. Once you reach the Main Menu or Title Screen of the game, you can let go of the buttons. There will be no notification to you that this process has completed because it is all done passively.
Clearing the Game Cache resolves many problems in games that rely heavily on the Xbox 360's cached memory. Some of these problems include, but are not limited to NPC issues, random textures, and "hitching", "lagging", or "slow gameplay".

3.) Disconnect your Xbox from the internet.
We have gotten reports that some players have been able to resolve their issues by disconnecting their console from the internet. It is possible that some freezes are related to some recent server outages that should be resolved shortly. If issues persist, disabling all internet connections on your console should prevent the game from attempting to access the servers. Obviously this is not ideal, but testing this should work at least for troubleshooting purposes, and should be resolved quickly.

4.) Clear save files.
Some crashes can be related to corrupted save data, especially crashes at a specific spot, or crashes on launch. The next step would be to isolate the save files, and see if launching without them remedies the issue. There are several ways of doing this:

  • a. Deleting all files in the Games and Apps folder related to GTA V. Select Settings==>System==> Storage ==> then highlight the HDD, press A, then select Games and Apps==>Grand Theft Auto V. Delete all files in this directory. Note: This method will result in permanent loss of data. If the game crashed the first time it launched, no valuable information is stored in here, so they may be deleted freely. If you already played the game for many hours, you may want to consider trying another method.
  • b. Backing up all files in the save directory to an external device before deleting all files as described above.
  • c. Possibly the simplest method, and one that also might isolate other potential issues would be to test the game from a brand new Xbox Live Gamertag. The save files for 360 games are tied to a specific user. Launching from a new user should cause the game to pull from a brand new pool of files.

5.) Test the game on a second console.

This last step is potentially the trickiest step, depending on alternate hardware availability, but probably the most important step for determining the cause of major issues on any console. That step would be to test the disc on a separate console. If you have a friend or family member with an Xbox 360, we strongly recommend installing the game on their console, and see if issues persist.

6.) Test the game when installed on a second hard drive.
Because GTA V is so reliant on install data, and utilizes the hard drive so heavily, it may also be worth attempting to install on a different drive, and see if that helps. If you were previously installing on internal storage, installing to a freshly formatted 16GB Flash drive may help improve performance. More information on installation can be found at the following:

http://support.rocks...on-Requirements

Here is the important part

If you continue to have issues, please let us know the following:

  • The model of your Xbox 360
  • The size of your hard drive, How large is it, and is the game installed to an internal HDD or Flash Drive?
  • How much free space is available on your HDD after installation.
  • The contents of any error code, if applicable. If possible, please submit a screen shot of any error messages, or give the precise wording of the error.

Email Rockstar Support at: [email protected]

Let them know that you performed the 6 steps mentioned above and then provide them the information they are requesting.  I'm hoping that with enough responses they'll be able to determine specific trends and figure out how to patch this issue.

Done & done too - I really hope they can patch this issue as I'm not going to buy a new Xbox just for this.

Thanks by the way, MeatButcher :)

So it's just a coincidence and all of these people's consoles just happend to be on their way out and GTA 5 just happends to be the game to break the camel's back?

This isn't a f*cking PC, consoles should be able to run a game made for that console no matter what revision it is... if not, say so on the packaging and before the game is released. This is a Rockstar and Microsoft problem... I'm not spending another dime on this game.

I was told that they are still looking into the issue and trying to gather data from gamers.  They need to identify the exact issue before it can be patched.  Best way to do that is to follow my post from above and send Rockstar Support the info they are requesting.  The more data they get on this issue the faster they'll be able to figure it out.

I've just got off chat with Xbox Support. They advised me this is not an hardware issue and that they have received "a lot complaints about this game" They told me to do this and it worked for me:

1. Delete all GTAV game data.
2. Clear system cache three times.
3. Delete marketplace data from storage system items.
4. Unplug console for three minutes.
5. Install disc 1.
6. Power off, do not insert disc 2.
7. Restart.
8. Install disc 2.
9. Play.

If issues persist repeat steps 1-7 then play from disc 2.

Haven't had to repeat the process yet. Hope that helps some of you.

About thirty minutes to an hour. It's a remarkable improvement. Not only has the freezing stopped but there is much less pop-in. Textures are loading. Roads are not vanishing. I could tell it did something as the game even loaded faster.

How did you install disk 1? By doing it on the game then shutting it off? Or on xbox dashboard?

Disc 1 as normal. Click play, let it install. When it asks for disc 2 turn off the power.

the part about deleting my gta data frightens me since I've gotten to a decent point in the game, but if this actually fixes the issue it might be worth it. thank you for posting this.

Sh@#-

And thought I was actually going to get to play this game tonight.  I am another case of a first release xbox (20gb) that was sent off for the RROD in 2008.  Consoles should be able to play console games.  I actually payed more for first release hardware to continually be punished for my loyalty.  The little that I've played was incredible! But C'MON, 2nd mission?!!   Such a tease-

I'm still playing, getting close to three hours, with no issues. Both discs installed to HDD. The guy told me if there were any further issues to contact Xbox Support again as they have one more thing to try. He specifically said this is not an hardware issue and they have had "a lot of complaints about this game".

EDIT: He told me he had just received an email from the "Enforcement Team" with the other workaround if the above process doesn't work. It's worth contacting them.

I am going to try the X-Box support fix tonight and see if it works.  I too contacted Rockstar and got the generic response and I replied a few days ago with no response.  Sounds like XBox isn't going to shoulder the blame (as they shouldn't) and Rockstar doesn't have a clue right now so we are going to be scrambling for awhile.  I for one refuse to purchase a different system just to play a game they clearly didn't test thoroughly enough and won't purchase a single rockstar product after this if they don't figure it the hell out soon.
