Install the Mandatory install to the HDD, then install Disc 2 to the USB.  This is the best option as there is no pop in.

For some reason when both are installed to the HDD, there is issues.

This fixes all the pop in issues that are seen when both discs are installed on HDD.

Called it.

In laymans terms;

Simply put: The HDD can't handle all the traffic over one internal bus, USB runs of another. (Ie. the sewage pipe is big enough, however there is a blockage halfway before dumping it to the sea)

Installing it both to USB wont help, use the analogy i used above, as the USBs bus controller will get overworked as well.

What about not installing disc 2 at all as Rockstar recommends?

Yup, it helps distribute the load.  This is excellent news.

Doesn't matter, USB and DVD both have their own connection to the CPU/GPU, if rockstar was more precise they would have told us not to run both discs on the same bus controller.

^ this.

Do the pop-ins happen if you just install the mandatory one, and not the boot disc?

EDIT: I saw the replies. Thanks guys.

Why would you install the boot disc at all then, if there's no pop-ins?

lets say I want to install the second disc to a USB flash drive how would the game know to run it off the USB Flash Drive instead of using the DVD Drive, because the disc is still required to be in there to even run the game. Just wondering as I have never used a USB Flash Drive before and always installed my games on my Hard Drive.

Good. I've just sat and freed up space on my USB stick. I'll use it now.

So your Xbox doesn't sound like it's going to take off while playing.

So I should install 1 to HDD an the other to USB? It will work fine?

How do I select to install one to the USB rather than the HDD? Doesn't it automatically select?

Not when you have a USB big enough inserted.

Ah, thanks ;) Never used a USB for my 360 before to install a game. So as long as I have a USB 16GB, I won't have any problems installing the game to that with the mandatory install on my HDD?

So best solution is:

DISC 1: HDD

DISC 2: USB

Correct?

Any recommendation to size/make of the USB?

Correct. 12GB or 16GB recommended size as the Xbox 360 takes about 700MB space for it's own configuration on the stick. Any memory stick with a read/write higher than 15 mb/s is good.

Install game on USB... No disc needed and your xbox would normally allow it.

Wrong, this will still cause the pop in issue, they need to be on separate devices, so one on Hard Drive and one on either USB or Disc, that's the best way to get maximum performance from GTAV on the Xbox 360.

Also I have to laugh DIGITAL FOUNDRY HAVE DISCOVERED THE SOLUTION, ...yeah, it's the solution a lot of us said hours ago right here and on other forums! :p

Yup. You must put 1 disc on HDD, The other disc on USB if you want zero pop in. Of course you can also run from the dvd drive, but knowing how long ill he playing this game for, full install is the way to go

Thanks for doing the work on this guys. There's decent flash drives to be had for $15, and I ordered one since I'll be playing so much and I hate pop-ups.

I plan on using a HP 16Gb stick I bought about a year ago. Don't have the box or anything anymore.

How can I tell if it's fast enough?
