So I watched some gameplay videos fearing that the driving looked "arcady" as people are saying around the internet. I studied what I saw and decided to do some testing in GTA IV.

So, while I was playing GTA IV, I carefully watched the driving and I realized that the cars bounced off of things unrealistically... floating through the air and spinning 360 degrees before hitting the ground. I also took a corner, and my car flipped over completely and forced me to have to abandon it! I also noticed that every car skids around like you're driving on ice (especially in the rain).

Yeah, it's fun driving in GTA IV, don't get me wrong, but I think there's a lot to improve on the way cars handle.

GTA IV is not the holy grail of realistic driving, and while it feels more realistic than most games, I think there are many improvements to be made and it looks like those improvements were made in GTA V.

Just because you're used to the driving in GTA IV, doesn't mean it was "right"... you're just used to it.

Anyway, after seeing the leaked gameplay videos of GTA V, they certainly did not get rid of the physics on the cars. I still see the cars reacting to every bump in the road, the suspension still moves as it should and you can still flip your car by hitting a jump just right.

Here's what we're gonna do. We're gonna play GTA V for a little bit and before we know it, we'll actually much prefer the newer driving over the old sloppy driving in GTA IV. Rockstar aren't dumb, they most likely tested the driving until it felt really good.

One last thing. It's almost impossible to tell how a game FEELS when you're watching some other idiot on the internet play it because:

1. You're not holding the controller so you can't tell how the car reacts to your input.

2. You most likely have your own play style and will not play the game the same way the guy in the video is playing.

I'm still going to buy GTA V and have an open mind about the driving because although I really love the handling in GTA IV, but that could be because I got used to it and I may just love GTA V's handling even more than GTA IV's over time.

Oh wow. So you have the game and you're playing it?

I saw the videos and it looks far from mario kart. It looks almost identical to GTA IV, but more grip on the road.

I don't know who you're talking to, but if you were talking to me, I'm not whining. I was just saying that GTA IV could use some improvements and it seems like (from what I saw) Rockstar has improved the driving in GTA V. It's like an enhanced version of GTA IV's driving. It still looks really good and the physics still look realistic and it doesn't look on-rails to me at all.

By the way, I just wanted to introduce myself. Yes, I just signed up, but I've been reading this site for a while now and I've been a GTA fan for years, but I just wanted to give my opinion on the matters that I've been reading about. I'm not a noob in any way. :-)

I have gta v and he is dead on. But its still an amazing game and you get used to the arcadey driving. Cars dont feel like they have mass or heft like they did in gta iv, but what can you do...whats done is done.

You people obviously haven't seen the other cars if you think the driving physics suck. Most people are tooling around in really nice cars. It's been confirmed that sports cars have different handling than trucks and SUV's

Exactly. I saw some videos of trevor driving a truck, suv, and some other heavier vehicles and it looked pretty damn good. You were capable of turning a little easier than you were in gta 4, but that's defiantly for the better for gameplay.

Plus seeing trevor drive the sanchez... Seriously that thing is going to be fun.

To all those saying IV was unrealistic and boaty:

I need evidance that GTA 4's driving is looks ''realistic'' or eighter way you whiners are trolling or are complete haters for nothing.

I dont see boaty like style to be realistic at all, never seen a real life car just jagging or how ever you say it like a boat type style in real life, in GTA 4 it looks retarded kind of. Turning hard can be claimed as realistic, but even in real life, cars i've seen especially driving in taxi's, turning is doesnt look anything like in GTA 4. Kids will complain, teens and adults will have fun with this amazing game.

Boaty?  Its realism!

Agreed Thebull...V is a step back. That's just a fact. After the quality of IV's nuanced physics, this is an outrage.

gotta love how they can't drive for sh*t in the leaked videos. I do slide and hit other cars but c'mom. it is as if they want to destroy their ride within a minute. :wtf:

I dunno man... maybe I'm too much of a car enthusiast to just crash it and go: oh well, suck it... and YES i'm like that even with my game cars. :dozing:

You guys are acting like GTAIV and GTAV were made by completely different dev. companies and are competing. R* decided to upgrade the cars in GTAV, big whoop. What did you expect them to do? Not innovate at all and get complaints that they didn't work hard enough and change enough? It's GTA f*cking V, not GTA IV.5. Every single GTA game has had different and unique driving; GTAV continuing this trend. You guys, the people pointlessly hating on the car physics when they haven't actually felt first hand with yet, need to either learn to accept change, or stick with GTAIV. While I'm going to be having a great ass time in V, you can go and whine in the corner like the little pathetic children you're acting like. Criticism is okay, but when you hate for no reason and simply state "R* took a step back" without providing any real ways they could have taken a "step forward", that isn't criticism, it whining.

OP's right. You don't like the driving because your used to IV's, that'll change come the 17th.

Its BS. I have saw all of them drive in the same manner. Even if that was true what upgrading your driving skill simplifies and dumbs down the driving? f*ck that.

Has something gotten to you where you forgot the difference between opinion and fact?  Here is some information that I have gather that is for sure.

FACT: GTA V has had it's driving refined (Whether your opinion is is good or bad is besides the point).

FACT: GTA V has slid away from a more realistic (yet still unrealistic) driving style from IV.

FACT: Many people's biggest complaint with GTA IV was that it took itself to serious.

FACT: Simulations and near perfect simulations aren't always considered fun by everyone.

OPINION: GTA V/IV had/has better driving.

Now that you know the difference between all of those opinions you posted.  I want to give my opinion. I personally watched all of those videos and I think the driving in GTA V was fantastic.  It looked manageable.  I don't consider myself the best driver in GTA IV, however, I'm not bad if I do say so.  I think that I lost so many missions because there was a very unresponsive driving mechanic in IV that made me slip into being stuck during a chase.  Where is the fun of being riddled with unnecessary obstacles with hard to adapt driving.  It took me until the middle of IV to really get it down enough to have a cool chase.

So my argument is that I believe (again opinion) that V will be easier to navigate the terrain, and are we all forgetting about GTA ONLINE? Can you imagine having difficult or hard to adapt driving there?  Everyone you drive with screwing up a mission because they need to be an expert or have a specific car to drive efficiently?  I think they had a lot of influence from balancing it for online play. Let me end by stating some more facts.

FACT: GTA V is the largest map in the series

FACT: GTA V has the best graphics in the series.

FACT: I am going to love this game.

OPINION: I think you're nitpicking to the point your going to spoil a great game for yourself.

Edit:

I forgot to touch on this topic:

I think that Rockstar saw that people thought they took the game to serious, by making everything so difficult to simulate real life; such as the driving mechanics.  So it makes sense that they would refine it to make it more fun, and less of a nuisance to go from one place to the other.  I remember in GTA IV  I would end up just cheating and spawning an annihilator so that I did frustrate myself with annoying and unnecessary driving  hiccups.
