They will easily get their money back in first 24 hours. GTA IV made 500 milj in first week or day, dont rememmber.

That £170mil is Development AND Marketing ;) Marketing (aka hiring people to hand-paint all those buildings, leasing the advertising space on all those buildings, decaling up buses/trains, the taxes & fees for advertising, etc) cost a lot more then people think it does.

Gran Turismo 5 had a Development budget of $80mil (USD), I'm going to say that GTA:V is somewhere around £100mil in dev costs with the other £70mil going towards advertising and some of that advertising budget comes out of the parent Take2 budget and not the Rockstar one.

$265,778,000 (USD) at roughly $45 per game (let's say stores get $10 & $5 of each game goes towards pressing, packaging & shipping to stores which may or maynot be included in that budget number so Rockstar/Take2 only actually get $45 out of the $60 game) that would take only 5,906,178 copies of the game sold to break even.

You're actually overestimating how much Rockstar and Take-Two get. According to [http://unrealitymag....-is-chopped-up/, out of a single $60 game only $9 goes to the developer and $18 goes to the publisher. But since Take-Two owns Rockstar, it's technically $27 going to the company that gets split between Rockstar North and Take-Two itself.

That's actually one of the reasons Rockstar is easily able to spend 5 years and hundreds of millions of dollars making a single game: their owners publish the games for them, rather than Rockstar North needing to shop around for a publishing company that takes the biggest share.

It's good for us that Rockstar spent so little on GTAV marketing, meaning that this huge budget went mostly into game development.  :p

IV made $500 million on the first week so they have had the money covered. I wouldn't be surprised if V made $600 - $900 million on the first week.

I hope it does well but with new consoles on the way i wonder how many people have sold their 360 or PS3 and are waiting for the PS4 or Xbox One.

Edit: Not really surprised on the money spent to make GTA V. After all how many developers get a blank check and all the time it wants from its publisher.

So they have to sell over 4 million copies just to profit? Considering selling 1 milion copies would yield around 50 million dollars acording to the 60 dollar price tag, and other companies getting their cut.

Doesn't matter, the profit will be 5 times the investment.

I had no idea how much money went into IV, much less V's budget. I just hope next gen dosen't impede on V's sucess.

That would probably make GTA V over through SWTOR for the game with the highest budget of all time.

Wow. That's a lot of capital to invest in any project, but then again I suppose take-2 have every confidence in R* after all, this is GTA!

Im pretty sure they have already made that up 5 times over just in preorders.

Do you know what percentage the guys at 2K and R* recieve for every 60$ game, I don't know for sure but I know it's less than half.

Just think about it guys, in the USA alone. there is 2,620,000 preorders. That's not counting all the other nations and consumers that are not preordering the game and just buying with luck. so just to be fair just multiply that number by 5 to get a estimate. that rounds to 13,100,000 copies being sold first week. Now to average the price of game between the 3 versions (no tax). about $96 USD. Take that number multiply. $1,257,600,000 USD First week sales. $265,778,000   spent on development.  $991,822,000 USD in profit! 373% Profit. Wow. Just wow!

This game will easily sell 10 million copies over its lifetime, so that's about $600M, of which $335M is profit

Not entirely. Remember that Rockstar and Take-Two don't get all of the money from each version: Take-Two is likely to receive about 18%, while Rockstar North gets about 15%. Since Take-Two owns Rockstar North, the whole company only earns 27% of the sale of the game. The rest goes to marketing (which, as has been said, includes things like the people who painted the murals on the buildings), the console manufacturer, and the individual retailer that sold the copy.

So Take-Two and Rockstar North, combined, will be making $267,791,940. Which is still several million dollars in profit just from the first week.

They will sell this game for what 60 bucks? Let's say, that 60$. That doesn't mean that all of this cake is going to R* pocket, many of you forget that simple fact..

They use all that money to make an amazing game for us. Then they sell it for 60$

lulz

Out of $265,778,000.00  They would have to sell 4,429,634 copies of the game to break even...They'll do that in the first 24-48 hours no problem, the rest after that is just profits.

Advertisement costs are insane indeed. For example you know that "There's a soldier in all of us" commercial that was made for CoD Black Ops. Making of that commercial alone cost more than the developement of the game.
