Something interesting that I just found out and I don't believe has been posted before, GTA V's budget was £170 million.

The article below also has other nice little tidbits too, such as one of the bridges in GTA V being modeled after the Forth Road Bridge.

Believable, 5 Years development, new technology, made their own engine, salaries.. Imagine paying 200 people 40k per year for 5 years while not releasing one game.

Probably, but thinking about how much money they put into this game and then them selling it for a "mere" 60 dollars. They're really banking on having great sales....Which they'll have no doubt because it's GTA.

That £170mil is Development AND Marketing ;) Marketing (aka hiring people to hand-paint all those buildings, leasing the advertising space on all those buildings, decaling up buses/trains, the taxes & fees for advertising, etc) cost a lot more then people think it does.

Gran Turismo 5 had a Development budget of $80mil (USD), I'm going to say that GTA:V is somewhere around £100mil in dev costs with the other £70mil going towards advertising and some of that advertising budget comes out of the parent Take2 budget and not the Rockstar one.

$265,778,000 (USD) at roughly $45 per game (let's say stores get $10 & $5 of each game goes towards pressing, packaging & shipping to stores which may or maynot be included in that budget number so Rockstar/Take2 only actually get $45 out of the $60 game) that would take only 5,906,178 copies of the game sold to break even.

I thought this was the article that actually had no sources and didn't talk to anyone at Rockstar to confirm. I think it was discussed in another topic.

GTA V IS MORE EXPENSIVE THAN ANY HOLLWOOD MOVIE EXCEPT PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN: AT WORLDS END.  IT EVEN BEATS SPIDER-MAN 3

Rockstar will make all of that back and more on September 17th alone.

Figuring in the cost of patches (and I'm not even talking about the development cost, I'm talking about what Microsoft & Sony charge the developers to have patches which isn't cheap at all) and the cost of maintaining the online servers over the next few years they're not going to be turning as much profit as it may appear.

I thought this was the article that actually had no sources and didn't talk to anyone at Rockstar to confirm. I think it was discussed in another topic.

It was published 6 hours ago and it doesn't say any analyst presumed the budget, it said: "Five years in the making, the game’s development and marketing budget of £170 million is the equivalent of a blockbuster film" -- no speculation.

EDIT: Could be wrong though, but £170 million I would say is accurate since they've had to pay the employees from not just North, but other studios too.

If there are 3million usa preorders alone, 3,000,000 x 60 = 180,000,000 thats pretty damn close to getting their money back. not counting UK pre orders or other countries i think they will be able to gross atleast 5% profit, but then again any profit is profit and thats a good thing.

Keep in mind most budgets listed are simply development/production budgets. This one takes into account marketing, too.

That's still probably the biggest budget for any video game ever though (not counting MMOs). Again, assuming this report is legitimate.
