Am I the only one that cringes at the "respect me if i'm helpful" signatures?

Almost as annoying as the "Lock & Ban" ones eh.

Nope not even close. Those "Respect" sigs are just plain retarded. :facedesk:

(Yes i know Prometheus was being sarcastic)

I say we should just have a rule that any one that publicly begs for respect, should have their count reset back to zero. Can't really do anything about private beggin, unless the mods want to go and waste time reading other people's pms.

I think the majority who vote to get rid of it are just insecure and worried what an internet character thinks of them.ridiculous.

Like stated earlier, just ignore the system or don't use it. I respect posts that I find helpful, funny or has quite a bit of quality and not some off-topic garbage. It's not your decision to remove or keep.

How am i insecure because i dont think the "Respect" system will work? Id say people who want to keep the system want to keep it so as their number gets higher so does their ego.

(Im not directing that directly at you just a general statement about the majority who want to keep it)

It's not about what people will think about you, but how much they will respect you. It's automatic.

When I see someone with a high number of respect, I automatically think that he is literally more respectable than another member with a low number of respect, therefore I have to respect him over the other guy. And it's wrong, in my opinion. We know that there are a lot of members here who just want to troll and post pointless stuff, but everyone needs to respected the same way.

Also you can give respect for whoever you want without any reason. At least the medals had a reason, as I said earlier, and they were cooler.

I brought this up as a cheeky bit of assholery in another topic, but seriously - negative respect would be fun.

But wasn't it you and some other Yardies that went on a respect spree? If I'm wrong, then say so but I find it a bit funny that you're trying to be this advocate against the system when you were the one abusing it? Whether for the lulz or in general.

It's a decent system because some people use the system for what it's designed for, respecting those who make a decent post or topic. Instead of 'Hey, cool stuff man' posts, they can get a like point to go with it.

The respect system will be fine, especially once V releases and a little time afterwards and a lot of users leave the forums who aren't here to contribute or join in on daily discussions in a mature manner. I don't see a problem with this system, it's used on a number of other forums in the world. Accept change man..

We went on  a "Respect Spree" because ehh why not? Just to see how much it could be abused really, and to see what the quota of "respect points" you could give out in a day.

My question is though why isnt a simple "Nice post" not enough, why they hell do you need a "Respect Point" to go with it? Plus why do we need "Respect Points" when we have Respect lists on our profile? If you want to see who i respect go to my profile, im not gonna waste my time going round "Respecting" people i like just so they can have a higher number than another person. What difference would it make if i had 2 points and you had 1,000,000?

Where's the logic in that? Just because you wanted to see how many you could do in one day or what the limit is? lol.. I smell bullsh*t.

Anyways man, if you ask, 'why isn't a post just good enough?', then I'll ask, 'why can't a respect system be just as good?'. But not everyone will post to everything they read, they rather simple hit the respect button if they enjoyed the users post, etc and move on to the next topic of their interest.

But obviously, respect points did matter to you guys, did it not? I rather have 5 respect points than 340, because then atleast I know who actually respects me. Honestly, I couldn't tell you who's hit my respect button, because I haven't looked but I'm sure whoever did it some have a genuine reason to do so, while others just do it because of a title or feel obligated. But the choice to have this respect system isn't up to you nor the 90 people that voted against it.

Respect system has it's pros and cons, just as much as most sh*t in life does. But we improvise, adapt and overcome. Honestly, I rather the respect system be limited to 1 hit per person only in a users profile, not each individual post a user makes. This will limit the amount of useless/bullsh*t respect hits. Rather than, oh look, there's my buddy, let me go and respect each of his posts from the last 3days. Instead, go to that users profile, hit a Respect and be done with it.

But you see, that's what I would like to see, not that it will happen, either way, I'm happy with it. I'm not making a crusade for it. But what you guys did isn't going to help your cause and if I were admin, I would keep the respect system going just to upset you even more for your little shenanigans.

Well i dont like it, but would it upset me if they were to continue to keep it? No.

Wheter you want to believe that we did it to abuse it or not is up to you but i aint going to try and convience you otherwise, thats your choice to believe what you want. You say you would rather have 5 points than 340? I dont care how many i have. The mods can set mine back to 0 and have it so i can never gain points again, so what? We had no respect sytem before V2 and people in general realised who respected them and who didn't, so whats the point in having a respect system now?

One more thing you implied that if you had a smaller number that that would mean people are being more genuine, when they respect a post of yours. How can you be so sure. Would you think i was being genuine if i was to go and respect every post you made today? We have a Respect List on our profiles, isnt that enough for you or do you like the look of a number rising underneath your username?

this is really what it comes down to.

part of the reason I don't ike the Respect system - in addition to it being useless vanity - is that it seems to have flat out replaced the 'Medals' system. the Medals were informative and helpful. they made sense and they could be worn with pride because you know something REAL was accomplished in order to earn one.

Respect is virtually anonymous (to everyone but the user who recieved it), completely useless, and without any real meaning.

I'll say this - the 'medals' system was just as masturbatory, if only on a different level. I don't want to wave my own dick around here, but I've been a longstanding, contributing, (if a little drama-magnetic) member of this place for ten years. I lost my "respect" when the karma system was dissolved, and never once did I see a medal while the notorious Slamman walked around with a fully decorated breast.

It's all a bunch of pettiness, in the end, but you can't point to the affectations of the unpaid staff at any given point in time and say that it means any more than the current opinions of contemporary contributing members.

But I still say negative respect should be a thing. :p

I'd really like if the respect got replaced with ''likes''.

And also show who and how many people liked each post like on IGN boards.

Indeed, not every medal received was due to being helpful, etc. Some medals were awarded due to the Awards at the end of the year, where favoritism is a huge role. So not every medal out there has good intentions behind it.

@Hodgey, I could care less about numbers.. but I see no problem with having a respect system. It's a new update, it comes with the update.. if you think that's annoying, look down further and you'll notice buttons for Facebook, Twitter, etc. I doubt it's because the admins want it there but it came with the new version. Whether or not they'll keep the respect system, who really knows? I don't see it being such a big issue as some of you make.

I would agree with Otter and say a disrespect/dislike option would be a nice touch to add rather than just a up vote. Disrespect would be an abused selection as well but again it could be used for the good as well, I think once V hits the table.. the cockroaches will start to dwindle and the members that you enjoy each day will still be here. But perhaps they will implement rules for the respect system, I don't know..

No sense in arguing about it, we'll see what happens. I'm fine if it stays or if it goes.. doesn't make any difference to me.

They removed the numbers from being seen underneath a users name. Still visible in profiles.. which is much, much better.

It's slightly amazing how strongly some of you feel about this. It's almost like it affects you in your actual lives.

It's a number under someone's name. It shows who's helpful and/or funny. That's it. Get over it..

It's good on the one hand that the number under the username is gone, since it decreases the odds that the system is getting abused. And having it renamed to "Likes" makes it probably less of a big deal for those who cared in the first place.

it was actually a pretty good system, for you oldheads who hated it instead of rioting about removal altogether, mods should have had an option if you want to use it and if you want to see it. only 97 peope voted yay and thats not enough people to remove a fairly good feature

I remember in the old school days of GTAforums we had the star system for topics, a popular topic had a lot of gold stars and you know a topic is not worth looking at when you see the negative stars, was decent imo don't know why it was taken off.

Yes but only 44 voted to keep it. So far the majority would like to see the system removed.

I think what tony-resta has just described would work alot better, give the topic "Stars" or "Respect" rather than the individual.

So the forum has opted out of the respect+ system for an infinitely more generic, facebook, meme style "like" system instead of just doing away with it entirely. Well played.

Respect on an internet forum? LOL

The only thing that does is alienate people and create attention/respect whores.

A couple other users have suggested that we have a like system, which I'm all for, but I think there should be a thumbs up/thumbs down at the bottom of everyones posts so that good ideas can get acknowledged, while idiot posts can get what they deserve. It would be a better system.
