I know it has been discussed but I just had a moment of clarity and want to know your opinions on this.

GTAV releases on current gen (360 and ps3), The new consoles come out this year. Rockstar will sell a billion copies of GTAV.

GTA online will run strong on these platforms and millions will join including those who may not even bought the game.

Rockstar will not release GTAV on next gen as most will have played the story and long moved into GTA Online. I believe they will support online and sometime around mid 2014 Rockstar will announce that GTA Online will be moving to next gen consoles. They will set a date for said release.

I predict that they will announce that we will be able to carry over our current gen online profiles to Xbox One and PS4 but that a GTA Online disc that carries the map or whatever content needed will be made available. I am sure it will be at a reduced price but it will be mandatory.

My point is that they are definitely going to double dip the pockets of every person out there who will be on GTA Online.

They will then announce a date when content will no longer be added to GTA online on 360 and ps3 and that online support will be ending essentially forcing all to move into the next gen.

THEY ARE GOING TO CLEAN HOUSE WITH THIS. The money figures they can make in a years time is going to be out of this world.
Some thought that the release of GTAV at the end of current gen consoles life was bad timing as people will be moving on, well I believe, sh*t I know that they are moving along with us and collecting all the way.
WOW GOOD MOVE ROCKSTAR YOU MAY HAVE MY MONEY NOW.

Sorry, I mistyped, An educated persons prediction. My prediction is not factually based.

I expect GTAOnline to become what DC universe is.

Free to play on the next gen, and microtransactions for new weapons and etc.

Really dude? I like to think about things like these from a business perspective as I am a business major and the economic factors behind such ventures interest me. So if that makes me crazy then yes they are one size fits all.

Sorry let me fit in with the rest here. Um yeah I want T-bones in the game, trevor is a racisit, um what kind of drink will you drink when you play, um I wonder if GTAV will make my life more interesting. There buddy you happy? I am just like you now.

While I'm not too sure how 'educated' your prediction is, it's nice to see you live a 'glass half full' kind of life!

Sorry man I don't read the threads often. It just struck me the kind of money that Rockstar is going to make with the console switch.

Hey mods these guys don't like my post go ahead and lock it, I really don't care anymore. Ill just go back to the steak thread.

ok let me add this: while your reasoning is sound and very possible you have to take one thing in consideration, backlash. Microsoft got a major backlash on their product namely Xbox One and while their business plan was mostly set on a media transition they did not consider that consumers might not agree to the sales plan. The pitch was enticing but in the long run it would simply damage the brand and you know that once the brand is defamed the whole product is doomed. They're trying to do damage control, some reestructuring and a complete 180 on the features.

What I'm getting at is that GTA fans are vicious. If they try to do such thing they will automatically be labled as the new EA and will loose credibility.

2 problems:

1. No idea how many PS4/XOne units will sell until likely 2015
2. You forgot PC.
_____________________

http://vgsales.wikia.com/wiki/Xbox_360 5 million units sold in one year, give or take. Keep in mind that number is without competition, as PS3 will launch one year later. Now, of about 5 mil new gen users, how many do you think will buy GTA 5? I won`t bet on such stellar numbers, because the number of the actual consoles will be smaller. It would make more sense to launch for PC first and wait for 2016 for next gen.

Then again, I`m speaking outta my ass so... I really have no idea what Rockstar is planning.

I agree with you regarding Microsoft and their approach with xbox one that is why they are doing some backpedaling with regard to mandatory online and some other features. As far as rockstar and charging for next gen online, I believe it will be marketed as a DLC type package that moves GTA online into the next gen. Which I think their fan base will welcome with open arms and give many another reason to move forward from current gen.

I don't see there being any backlash I just don't see Rockstar providing years of online support on outdated consoles. I believe it will be a smooth but inevitable transition.

Of course thats the natural progression that they will eventually ditch the ps3/360 but it wont be that fast. As much as people may love gta online not everyone can be like ok let me spend 400+ dollars on a new system and than the extra charge for gta. If you could take your profile why would you need the disc? wouldnt it all be on the servers? Rstars commitment to 360/ps3 servers will be determined by how populated it is, not by them forcing us to change over. GTA Online could be its own seperate entity by the next gen much like DCUO but time will tell us what their plans are. A subscription fee would generate more money than a 1 time buy. Its like how we only get 1 controller with a new system and they'll sell us the 2nd.

Also GTA as a series hasnt even sold close to a billion copies let alone 1 installment of the franchise. San Andreas was the most popular selling gta and that hasn't even hit 30million sales yet. If they sell that many units you better take all your money and buy ttwo stock cause that will def beat the streets estimates of sales.

You make some good points, and regarding the billion copies figure I wrote that was simply a case of hyperbole. I am aware they have not sold a billion.

Are you talking about an upgraded next-gen version of GTA Online, or exactly what we'll get on 1st October? If it's a proper next-gen version, why would they only port the online part of the game?
