Ok, the melee in GTA IV is clunky as hell. Is their any way to tell when to block? I can't. I always succesfully block on luck cause I can't tell when my opponent is going to strike!! Its bugging me because I am going after trophies. Any tips appreciated.

Just like with real life fist fights you have to practice to get good. Pay careful attention to how different pedestrians fight, and how long it takes for blocking to activate. Learn to time it just right.

I look at their feet. When a guy you're fighting makes a step forward, it's time to block.

It's all about your timing. Right before the punch lands is when I usually counter, and it works about 99% of the time, but I've also played the hell outta the game and have done a ton of fist fights.

Press X as soon as the ped begins his swing. It's easy. Practice against cab drivers.

But there is some peds who actually can fight properly. Like the security guard in Perseus. Don't even try to dodge their punches.
