Twice in the last week, my 3 year old Xbox 360 has stopped reading games. First time I had to restart it before it would read games again, the 2nd time I had to open it and close it about 5 times. I've taken the precaution of not leaving games in when I'm done with it cause whenever it's happened there was a game disc in there, but will that be enough? I am getting a PS3 about a month after GTA V comes out, but I don't wanna wait another month to play a game that I have been waiting for for almost 2 years while everyone else gets to play it. What should I do?

You can find tutorials on youtube on how to fix that. I was having the same problem and fixed it.

With stuff like this it's hit and miss so we can't guarantee your console will be fine unfortunately. Maybe buy the game digital?

This is the GTA V section, if you have any technical needs I'd suggest posting them in the Tech & PC Chat section.

I can't do that just yet, I'm ordering a $56 320 GB harddrive next Friday cause that is my next paycheck so I'll have money to get it. Well luckily GTA V is a mandatory install, is the install you have to download the whole thing or is it only part of the game? Will I have to install the whole thing which is an extra download?

Same thing happened to my xbox ages ago when I had one before it E-74'd on me and I gave up on it

What I did was void the warranty by opening it myself (the thing is like opening a f*cking safe) and cleaning the laser lens with alcohol. That worked for a little while but it didn't fix the issue entirely.

I don't really recommend doing that but you can give it a try if you're okay with voiding your warranty, provided you still have one active.

Mandatory install installs most of the game data on your HDD. But a full install is recommended for Xbox users so the disc doesn't have to spin.

I can't, it's for my birthday and my parents won't take it out of layaway, even if it means GTA V early, a game they know I have been waiting for for almost 2 years. They are that strict. Hell, my mom wanted me to wait till my birthday for GTA V all like "Why not wait for birthday? It'll make it more special!" Luckily my dad talked her out of it because he knows how much I've waited for it, but I doubt he would take the PS3 out of layaway. (I do have a job, maybe I could take my money and bribe them?)

So are you saying that their will come a day soon that my Xbox 360 will be dead? Christ. I hope I can convince my parents to take my PS3 out of layaway and give it to me now so I can play GTA V.

Would it be crazy to see an XBOX funeral? Like, have it by a bedside surrounded by everyone that played it and everything before it passes, gives its final words, then goes on to that big journey where all Xboxs go, whether they are shot to death or burned out. Those poor XBOXs; lived a good life.

Yeah. I seriously can't believe this is happening to me right before a game I have been waiting for this long. I have a bad feeling my parents aren't gonna wanna take my PS3 out of layaway and make me wait another month. I hope I can convince them. Is there anyway I can fix it?

So I just opened the tray and I saw a whole bunch of dust and I removed it with my finger and I put in GTA IV and it worked. Is it fixed now that I removed the dust?

That dust could have been blocking the laser at times. If you still get the error later on down the line, you'll have to open up your Xbox and give it a good clean. Is this a phat or slim?

Get someone to fix it for you.

Which will probably mean either playing around with the potentiometers on the DVD drive laser assembly to get it to be less picky or just replacing that entirely - maybe a good cleaning helps too but if not those are likely your best options.

If you don't want to (or can't) do that you can buy a new DVD drive, but make sure it's like the one you need - and that'll require some extra work.

If all else fails you can still hack the Xbox in order to be able to install games without the need for a disc drive.

It stopped reading discs again. I got it to read the game I was trying to play but after inserting it and taking it out about twice. I can't get a PS3 until about two and half weeks after GTA V cause of money reasons. I swear to god, if my Xbox 360 breaks two weeks before GTA V I'm gonna f*cking kill someone!

Can't you just install the game on the hard drive and use some program to play it without CD?
