Paying *might* help keep the scrubby 10 year olds out of multiplayer. So I'll pay.

GTA IV had bad, very bad MP and if GTAOnline is even remotely close that I'm not going to even spit towards it.

if you own an xbox you have to pay to use most online features, that would be the only reason someone would have to pay to play GTA Online.

They were already thinking about this back in 2008:

Next Grand Theft Auto Could be Subscription Based -
Take Two CEO Strauss Zelnick sees online transactions as the future of videogames.
By Garnett Lee, 11/17/2008

At the same BMO Capital Markets' conference last week in New York where he gave an update on upcoming GTAIV DLC and Chinatown Wars, Take Two CEO Strauss Zelnick offered a glimpse further down the road. In his "Negative Approach" blog for cnet, Dave Rosenberg related these remarks from Zelnick:

QUOTE
The Holy Grail is taking a business, already a very large and successful business that's focused on packaged goods...and turning that into a subscription business or a semi subscription business where we have an ongoing relationship with consumers, giving them products that they want. Who's better positioned to do that than the company that has the top franchises?

It isn't much of a stretch here to start connecting the dots. The Grand Theft series definitely fits the bill as a "successful business that's focused on packaged goods," and it's also the top of their franchise properties. And though delayed, the DLC plan for GTAIV offers an ideal test run for a "semi subscription" model along the lines Zelnick suggests.

Not that they needed more incentive, but Watching World of Warcraft once again flexing its muscle with the release of the Wrath of the Lich King expansion must spur them on that much harder. Everyone asks, "Can a console game tap into the World of Warcraft meme?" and "what will be the next World of Warcraft?" Of all the answers out there, "World of Grand Theft Auto" arguably makes the most sense, and from the sound of Zelnick's comments could already be well under way.

I couldn't support a game or a developer that charged to play console games online. It's bad enough that we have to pay for Xbox Live to then pay a lot of money for a game that is only half available to play. So no I wouldn't pay it. In fact if it's announced on Thursday that there is a pay-to-play online subscription for GTA:O then I'll just cancel my pre-order completely.

I hope R* won't go down that road because it's a very unscrupulous business practice.

If it was thw unfortunate case it was a paid service, no doubt I would still pay a subscription to play GTAO.

It would all depend on what i would be getting for my money and how much it would cost, before i know those details it would be hard for me to say wheter i would pay for GTA Online or not.

Thats why these games companies think that they can charge for everything these days because people just throw money at them.

If subscription fees would be going to maintaining dedicated servers with a much larger player limit and consistent world where gangs could vie for territory and power etc, I wouldn't mind throwing them a few bucks a year. Not a lot, mind you, and the content would have to be outstanding.

I'll play only if it's free. Rockstar would disappoint me deeply if they did a subscription based game.

I just dont have the funds to pay a subscription for video games, one of the main reasons I never got a 360.

If I could afford it I still wouldnt be happy about the idea.

I too am hoping that GTA Online is free and I most likely won't play it if it requires a mandatory subscription just to play. It would be an extremely lousy move if Rockstar did this.

If we do have to pay money to play online, I do hope that it will be optional (i.e; a 'free to play' model for additional premium content) rather then mandatory.

I'm already paying for Xbox Live and paying $60+ bucks for the game itself. If they do, I won't bother.

Rockstar can suck my dick if they want more money off me, after having got the game, and looked forward to it for the last 3 years.

I'm canceling my SE pre-order if I have to pay to play online.

This is complete bullsh*t. People have gangs to run and we won't want to pay just to run our gangs

The tweets from GTAVoclock scared me little.

"Please note: R* are not releasing #GTAV tomorrow for free. Clearly another reason to be unhappy wink.gif - 3hs ago"

Could this hint towards online not being free? I mean, why else would they say that, to warn us?

No check the tweet before it.

Hmmm, some folk would find reason to be upset if R* released #GTAV tomorrow for free, it seems. Not sure what emoticon that deserves

It's in reply to people complaining, they're basically saying some people won't be happy regardless of what R* do.

Slightly off topic here, but what would be cool is if GTA:O had a server browser like SA:MP and had dedicated servers but also allowed the users to setup a server from their PC

Same. I got lucky last year and got a 12 month Gold membership. It's expired now though. confused.gif

If it is subscription based, I'll pay for it whenever I can.

If the online is well made and "constantly" updated with new content like let's say...a typical MMORPG, then i don't mind paying up to 13 per month.

I've been paying that for 8 years now to play WoW, so if GTA Online can provide me with such entertainment...13 is nothing.

Maybe the question should be rephrased.
Would you rather:

Pay nothing and get a multiplayer experience similar to GTA IV's?

or

Pay a monthly fee and get a vast multiplayer experience rivalling that of an MMO like World of Warcraft with new content continiously being made and lots of support from the dev?
